Following the seasons of 2010 and 2011, the 2012 archaeological survey of the Sagalassos Project continued in the Burdur Plain* (Fig. 1). The 2011 survey had focussed on the banks of the Düğer Çayı and discovered several previously unknown settlements there. The main focus of this campaign was the area around the Boz Çayı. One of the questions of this year’s campaign was to determine whether the Boz Çayı played the same role in the settlement pattern as the Düğer Çayı, although being more deeply incised in the terrain (for the general aims of the survey as a whole, see Anmed 10, 2012, 142-147). On the banks of the Boz Çayı one site was already known Karaçal Höyük. This site was discovered by the Hacılar excavation team during the late 1950s and revisited by the Sagalassos survey team in 1996 and 2010 when material from the Late Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age I and Early Bronze Age II periods was identified. In 2012 the western bank of the Boz Çayı was investigated from the village of Karaçal up to the village of Yarıköy (except the area around Karaçal Höyük that was investigated already in 2010). About three kilometres north of Karaçal Höyük another site dating to the Chalcolithic period was found. This site consists of only a small concentration of pottery, but as its vicinity was completely devoid of artefacts, it can be safely concluded that we are dealing with a site, albeit a small one. Buluntuların çoğunluğu, Boz Çayı’nın batı yakasındaki modern Yarıköy yerleşmesinin güneyindeki on the top of an old river bank of the Boz Çayı overlooking an old meander, with slopes going down towards the east and south (Fig. 2). The geomorphological and geological team of the Sagalassos project confirmed that in Chalcolithic times, the river was already incised as deeply as today. This makes it also unlikely that the limited number of finds is a result of later overbank deposits that obscure the archaeological remains. The small quantity of material implies that only a limited number of sherds can be dated. Four sherds contained red on cream slip painted in a geometric design. Pottery with similar decoration and fabrics was identified in large quantities in the excavations by J. Mellaart at the famous site of Hacılar located 2.5 km. to the southeast. This allows these sherds to be dated to the Early Chalcolithic period. The rest of the collected pottery could be dated to the final phase of the Late Chalcolithic period. This Late Chalcolithic pottery is characterized by a burnished surface and by a straw-tempered fabric. Additionally, a few EBA II body sherds were found. Although the restricted size prohibits firm conclusions about the functional division of this collection, the vessel types that could be identified consist mainly of jars and bowls. The site is preliminarily interpreted as a small hamlet or farmstead. The site was probably situated at the relic meander because of greater water availability. Even today the environment in the meander is humid, and vegetation is dominated by reeds. The majority of the artefacts were collected from the area south of the modern village of Yarıköy on the western bank of the Boz Çayı. At this location the extensive survey of the Sagalassos project had already identified a site locally known as Kilise mevki in 1996. At that time the remains of rubble walls were still visible, while today nothing of the sort can be seen. As human bones were also discovered at that time, the site was interpreted as a large necropolis belonging to a village that was located near the junction of two important ancient roads, the Sultan 231 YÜZEY ARAŞTIRMA RAPORLARI SURVEY REPORTS Yolu and the Deve Yolu (Via Sebaste?). Pottery dis covered at this site was dated to the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods (Fig. 3). In 2012 the intensive survey revisited the area to check its condition today as well as to get a better understanding of the periods present at the site and the layout of the distribution pattern. In an oval area of about 500x100 m. stretching from northwest to southeast, a large concentration of pottery from the Byzantine period was discovered. About 300 m. south of this first concentration a second separate, but very similar concentration of pottery was discovered (ca. 200x300 m.). Res. 3 Yarıköy’ün güneyindeki yoğun buluntu alanları Fig. 3 Fields with concentration south of Yarıköy alandan toplanmıştır. The sherds collected at these two concentrations included typical pattern-burnished pottery from the Byzantine Dark Age period (A.D. 610-867), known also from contemporary occupation at Sagalassos. However, most Byzantine sherds stemmed from the Middle Byzantine period (A.D. 867-1204). The collected pottery included storage jars, cooking vessels, and tableware vessels. This suggests a range of activities like cooking, storage and dining was carried out at this site, indicating that at least part of this concentration represented a village site. Additionally, a reasonable amount of tiles were encountered in the field. Besides Middle Byzantine pottery the remains of several glass bracelets were found that belong to the same types as excavated at Sagalassos, where they could be dated to the 10th to 13th centuries A.D. The pottery study revealed not only Byzantine period pottery but suggested that we are dealing with a multiperiod site because Classical-Hellenistic (500-200 B.C.), Hellenistic (333-25 B.C.), Late Roman (A.D. 300-450) and Late Ottoman (A.D. 1700-1900) pottery was also found, albeit mostly in smaller quantities (Fig. 4). The Hellenistic shape repertoire contained mainly jar and jug fragments with strap handles in a greyish fabric and slipped fine ware, while the Late Roman pottery was represented by red-slipped bowls, amphora and some cooking wares. No Early Roman Imperial pottery was attested during the material study. Metal cüruflarının ortaya çıkarılması da, muhtemelen bu yerleşmede demirin işlendiğine işaret etmektedir. could be dated to the Late Ottoman period equals the Middle Byzantine period pottery in frequency. Green glazed sherds, typical for Late Ottoman pottery (A.D. 1700-1900), were present in some instances in this context. The discovery of metal slag most probably points towards iron processing at this site. Besides the pottery concentrations, 45 lithic artefacts were also collected from the northern part of the concentration located to the south of Yarıköy (Fig. 5). These artefacts were produced in gray/white and brown chert and white quartz, which are common raw materials in the Burdur area. The attested lithics were very fragmentary due to the long exposure to the surface and consisted mainly of flakes, among which only a few were retouched. Furthermore, production waste such as core fragments was present, which suggests that at least part of the collection was produced locally. The virtual absence of lithic artefacts in most of the surveyed fields in the region shows the exceptional nature of this distinct concentration. However, further analysis on the technology should be carried out to give a precise date to this site. In all, the Burdur Plain Survey of 2012 has shown the presence of a few sites on the western bank of the Boz Çayı covering the Prehistoric as well as the later historical periods. However, the dense settlement pattern attested on the banks of the Düğer Çayı was not replicated along its eastern counterpart. Especially, the absence of Archaic to Classical-Hellenistic pottery concentrations as were found along the Düğer Çayı in previous years is remarkable. Notwithstanding the relative paucity of sites along the Boz Çayı, this year’s survey has greatly improved our understanding of the Prehistoric, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Again, the rich history and archaeological importance of the Plain of Burdur has been vividly illustrated.
