Published in Altyazı in Feb, 2009 (issue 81) circulation: 9000 pcs Because God Works In Mysterious Ways Clint Eastwood’s Changeling (screenplay by J. Michael Straczynski) is an impressive, based-on-a-true-story melodrama. The title of the film, as an untranslatable cultural concept (which is changed into Sahtekar as a consequence)* refers, by origin, to fairy mythology. According to the myth, fairies replace their ugly, fretful, whining babies with human ones to get rid of them. They kidnap a human baby and replace her with the fairy baby who has been rendered almost identical by use of magic. The similarity between is only “almost”, because the fairy baby is thinner and smaller than her human counterpart. There are various –and monstrous- ways to identify whether a baby is a changeling or not, which definitely will turn out detrimental for the baby. If these methods do work and the baby turns out to be a changeling, fairies return the human baby with no retaliatory harm given. However, this fairy story is not the case in the film, at all, which is rather the story of a scandalous mising child investigation in Los Angeles towards the end of 20’s, which resulted in a huge public protest and a lawsuit against Los Angeles Police Department authorities. Despite the insistence of the mother of the missing child, Christine Collins (Jolie), LAPD Chief and Captain Jones (the head of missing persons department) deny the fact that they returned the wrong child to the mother, until the murderer of the twenty missing children is coincidentally arrested by some other officer. Although the film is basically about Collins’ endeavour to prove that she had the wrong child returned, it is well-supported by very sound side-stories and consequently turns out a very severe political criticism, in contrast to the connations of its title. In the critical axis of the film are some of the key issues of the political agenda of the U.S in 20’s and particularly because of that, the rest of those issues are all the more conspicuous with their absence. Let’s first elaborate on what this critical axis involve. Problematizing power relations is, of course, the top issue; on the other hand, there is a severe criticism of gender codes. In the introduction of “lunar asylum” as a theme, a Foucauldian critique of sanity is the point at issue. However, in the last analysis, the severity of the criticism received by these only makes it more disturbingly visible that the church, the press (or the mass media of the times) and the court is very much idealized in the film. Moreover, the African-Americans, another overwhelming social and political issue of the times, are nonexistent. Saying this runs the risk of reiterating the frivolous complaints of the post-colonial intellectuals who are habitually critical of the texts that are critical about emperialism for their not being critical about colonialism. The film is under no obligation to problematize or be critical about the African-American issue of the early 20th century America, nevertheless the absence of African-American characters in the film is disturbingly noticeable. The film’s exact chronological setting is 1928, that is, right before the Depression. There is not much in the film about the economic recession of the times which led the way to The Great Depression; however, “those in power partaking in crime” which is characteristic of the Depression era is a fundemental concern in the film. As the ultimate triumph of “law and order” over “power and crime” is epitomized, public conscience and the church as driving forces in the process are idealized. Against the corrupt state authorities is posited the reformist Presbyterian church which is known for its pursuit of social justice. This inevitably adds a religious undertone to the text and the significance of this undertone is also apparent by the fact that the Presbyterian priest Gustav Briegleb is played by not some actor but John Malkovich who is the male lead. While corruption in LAPD is subject to severe criticism, the film also points out to the fact that not all the police force is corrupt to the bones but there are those among them who has an idea about moral obligation and work ethic, and Detective Lester Ybarra is the embodiment of this latter type. But same realistic imagination does not apply to the representation of the press, the church and the court. The press, in its entirety, bravely goes against the police force and stands by Collins’ side, judicial authorities bravely deal with criminal offenders without yielding into political pressure they are supposed to have on them and a church -with its priest and its whole community- stands for the oppressed and is able to challenge those in power with uncompromising moral uprightness. This is not really possible for a society that is downright corrupt by its basic institutions and that goes right ahead to economic collapse, and such a picture, in terms of representation, is hugely romantic. Moreover, the way the capital punishment and redemption is represented in the film subverts the foregoing idealistic depiction of judicial power and religion. In the execution scene of Gordon Northcott, the murderer of the missing children, one of the mothers who particularly stands right by Collins’ side turns her head away, overwhelmed with the sympathetic pain she feels for the hanged man. But all the while Collins watches the execution with an apathetic and expressionless face which poses a striking contrast to the other lady. As Collins is the character from whose perspective the audience experiences the events related in the film and by whose pain and sorrow they are stricken, shortly, with whom the audience identify themselves, her look and demeanour is also the reaction to be given by the audience. In other words, the film wants and/or knows that its audience should respond to the execution exactly as Collins does; with apathetic and relentless cold-heartedness. Particularly when it is obvious that the murderer is not mentally stable and should go to a mental institution rather than the gallows, it is rather short-sighted on the part of the text that Northcott’s being condemned to death is not problematized in these terms at all. And, since the judicial power has been represented as an epitome of well-practice throughout the film, this, on the whole, comes to suggest that there is a latent approval for his death in an undercurrent level of the text. Similarly, the fact that Northcott is diminished into a pathetic, caricature version of himself in the scene he is taken to the scaffold in which he histerically cries for repentance, declares that God has forgiven him and begs from the audience that somebody pray for him, and that the chaplain only brushes him aside with an indifferent nod come to imply that there is no repentance for him and he is not going to have it since he does not deserve it. This not only contradicts the Christian ideal of forgiveness and redemption but also the “protectiveness of the church” ideal which is celebrated in the text by example of Presbyterian church and its priest. The film is also critical about the American Dream*. Bearing in mind that this socalled dream has spread to the masses by means of American cinema and that the film’s setting is around the birth day (late 20’s) and place (LA) of that version of the American dream, the fake Walter’s answer to the question about why he has lied about his identity is significant. By means of this critical allusion that is subtly and deftly delivered to its destination, the film takes another characteristic of the Depression era into its critical context. The film makes its critique of gender issues by means of a patient in the mental institution named Carol (Amy Ryan), a prostitute. The bias that dates almost back to the birth of Christ about the woman’s being an irrational creature who acts solely upon her emotions is criticized by a doubly outcast (as she is both a prostitute and “mad”) female character. And the “standard procedures” of the asylum reinforces her arguments. The police is capable of ordering the compulsory detention of any “disobedient” woman in accordance with Code 12, and it is rendered impossible for these women to prove their sanity by courtesy of the counter efforts of the collaborationist head doctor. Carol’s introductory (and critical) speech about the rules there and the atmosphere of the asylum helps shaping the Foucauldian critique employed in the film about madness. In the film, the fact that the asylum tradition is based on the idea that reason is the one and only determinant of humanness and those devoid of them are animals in humonoid form, therefore could be treated like animals is converged with the fact that those in power are entitled to lock there up any dissenter they want. And thus, the organic relationship between Reason, Madness and Power is underlined. Changeling paints a very dark portrait of the real human world despite the fairy-world connnotations of its title. Thus, the film tells that there is no room for fairy-tales anymore in this very modern state of Denmark that is rotten to the core, in which the biggest prize is paid by the children by their life, in which the children are condemned to live in horror and are not protected at all. However, as the final word of the film is “hope”, uttered by Christine Collins herself, we might say that the movie is not altogether pessimistic. The only thing left behind for Christine is hope, which is a subtle allusion to Pandora’s box. This box immediately reminds us of another box which was mentioned at the very beginning of the film. That is the box Christine Collins talks about while telling her son the reason why his father left, that is the box which is called responsibility. Thus, the film makes a final link to this notion which has been emphasized on many occasions throughout the film not only in terms of parent-child relationship, but also in the context of power relations. Therefore, we may say that unlike God, the ways to work in is very definite on our part. Notes: 1- Sahtekar means “con-man” in English. 2- The American Dream here suggests the version that is also widely adopted by the Turkish public opinion, which is an interpretive definition of the term as a state ideology based on an imaginary American Identity hard-sold by Hollywood since the early beginnings of the establishment of American cinema. In that sense, the term rather suggests the American Dream as we know it today, which is very much associated with Hollywood culture. For further details see The American Dream: A Short History Of An Idea That Shaped A Nation, by Jim Cullen 2003. (This note is only for the translation) Published in Altyazı in Oct, 2009 (issue 88) circulation: 9000 pcs Fools Rush In Where Angels Fear To Tread* Based –supposedly- on the Chuck Palahniuk novel, Clark Gregg’s Choke, at least, provides us with a magnificient case-study to learn about how the literary adaptations should not be made, which, needless to say, is an effort that extends the limits of this essay. Jane Austen’s masterpiece Pride and Prejudice –also known for its many adaptations to screen and even to TV- opens with this ironic statement that is hilariously critical about her times: “It’s a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”* If we rearrange this statement so that it applies to the literary adaptations of today, the duty will be served not only for Jane Austen’s person bu also for all the authors sharing her lot: “It’s a truth universally acknowledged that when a good novel with a sound readership is adapted to film, the end result will be catastrophic. Apart from those of plays, in adaptations of all literary genres -be it epic, short story or novel- more or less the same problems occur. Particularly the novel adaptations are of a more compelling job. Of all those I have seen so far, very few is outside the terms of the above generalization like Karel Reisz’s adaptation of John Fowles’ French Lieutenant’s Woman (screenplay by the famous playwright Harold Pinter) and Sam Mendes’ adaptation of Richard Yates’ Revolutionary Road (screenplay by Justin Haythe). Among the problems mentioned above are, first of all, those which stem from the fact that literature and cinema have different languages. In the simplest terms, the language of literature is comprised of words, whereas that of cinema is of frames (which are twenty four in number per each second) and each literary adaptation is a translation from one signification system (or language, shortly) to another. Thus, as it is the case with each and every translation, in literary adaptations it is inevitable that a certain amount of loss in terms of either form or meaning will occur. But the fact that this is inevitable does not entail that the translator could get as arbitrary as she wants, now that the original text could not be contained with its originality. In that sense, there are limits to translator’s independency, so to speak, and these limits are determined by the text itself. Apparently, now and then, some independent film-makers, intoxicated by their own title or by the Pierian spring, tend to trespass those limits,* and Gregg’s Choke is the catastrophic end-result of this impudence. If you are a good reader and a cinephile, 1. Before the end of the first thirty minutes of the movie, you will figure out that Choke is a literary adaptation, even if you did not know it beforehand. And the knowledge comes from noticing that the mayhem of “the delibaretely blurred meaning units” is because these are not cinematic meaning units, but fotocopied versions of their literary counterparts. (inability to translate) 2. Despite this mayhem and although you have not read the novel, you may analyze or even close-read the allusive, symbolic or referential units in the text like the main character Victor Mancini’s sex addiction, his purposely chokes, his workplace being a colonial theme park, his problematic relationship with his mother Ida, and his relationship with Paige Marshall. But your being able to do so purely stems from your ability to fill in the text by courtesy of what you have seen and learned by your previous expriences as a reader and a viewer, though you are much hindered by the film itself. (text requiring extratextual information to be made sense of) In addition to these if you have read the novel, 1. You will turn the player off not long after the first thirty minutes. (those who are watching in the cinema and particularly the Palahniuk fans may react more severely.) 2. And if you have the stoic calm of a Capuchin monk to watch the whole movie, you may go on with your life happily, knowing that virtues are their own rewards. (the happy ending) There is not much left to say about this good-for-nothing film after Fırat Yücel’s critique in the last issue. Containing all sorts of possible shortcomings that are common to literary adaptations, paying no respect to the text whose name it bares and being extremely boring, Gregg’s Choke definitely lives up to its name by concretizing the concept in the audience’s throat. Choke is rated AC! (audience strongly cautioned: run for your life!) by World Cinema Appreciation Society Notes: 1- Title is a citation from the 18th century satirist Alexander Pope’s Essay On Criticism and the citation is translated by myself. In the original version of the critique there is an explanatory note about my translation. 2- In the original version of the critique this note is about, again, my translation of the citation from Jane Austen’s mentioned novel. Here, the note is to inform that some parts in this paragraph like the novel’s Turkish title are omitted in this translation for reasons of irrellevancy for the German reader. 3- In the original version of the critique this sentence makes use of the arbitrary translation habits of a Turkish poet-translator called Can Yücel to concretize the parallelism between a bad translation and a bad adaptation. And the note is to name some of those poorly translated poems. Here, it is to notify that the part about Can Yücel is omitted in the translation of the critique for the same reason as in the 2nd note and replaced with another referance to Pope’s mentioned poem so that the argument in the translated version would not lose much from its poetic allusions. Kadın kimliğinin sosyal zeminde kodlanma biçimine yönelik eleştiriyi metin Collins’i akıl hastanesindeki hayat kadınıyla konuşturarak yapıyor. Collins’in oğlu Walter’a babasının neden gittiğini anlattığı diyalogtaki kutu, adı sorumluluk olan kutu. Notlar: 4- 18. yüzyıl İngiliz hiciv yazarı Alexander Pope’un Essay On Criticism (Eleştiri Üstüne Bir Deneme) adlı eserindeki “fools rush in where angels fear to tread” dizesinin tarafımdan, anlamı %90 korumak için biçimden %90 feragat eden bir çevirisidir. 5- Jane Austen’ın adı geçen romanından, anlamı ve biçimi %90 koruyan ve tarafımdan yapılmış çeviridir. 6- Can Yücel’in bu anlamdaki bazı “güzide” çevirileri arasında T.S Eliot’un “J. Alfred Prufrock’un Aşk Türküsü” ve Shakespeare soneleri başı tutmaktadır.
