Her şeyin temeli olan ‘Var olmak’ fikri, aynı zamanda görünür olmanın zorunluluğunu da içerir. Zihnimiz bu duyumsanabilir olanı sınıflandırırken, kendi gerçeğini yeniden şekillendirir. Böylece gözün kararı, zihinde sorgulanarak, aklın ve vicdanın kararını inşa eder. Günümüz iletişim ortamında hemen her şey görsel algılama alanı üzerinden şekillenmektedir. Yaygara Güncel Sanat İnisiyatifi Yaygara Contemporary Art Initiative The story of the eye explains the construction of the object’s own reality and the fictional reality created in our minds. It includes the idea of “be in existence”, which is the basis of everything, as well as the difficulty of being visible. While our mind is classifying this sensible, it reshapes its own reality. In this way, the decision of the eye constructs the decision of the mind and conscience by being questioned in the mind. In today’s communication environment, almost anything is shaped through the visual perception area. People exposed to visual shocking, where images are presented to the mind with a repressive effect in the type indicators, it is always ambiguous what he really sees and how he gives the meaning. Focus groups who desire the continuity of this ambiguity are watching everything from their observation towers like a big eye and are intervening at any desired time. While the fate of societies is fictionalized in the skyscrapers of imperialism by preparing scenarios, even the boundaries of the geography he will live are almost determined with the “decision of the eye”. In the present, while the boundaries of their way of life in the social sphere are tried to be determined, political discrimination, factionalizing of beliefs, conversion of authority, it is in question that the boundaries of the individuals’ liberty is being questioned. While authority constructs the design of a new individual and society, it wants to determine the shape by itself. The looking, seeing and understanding process, as the window opening to reality, can always deceived by manipulated images. This condition of being deceived turns into an addiction after a period, which cannot be controlled by the mind. Then, it starts to monitor each image fictionalized by the authority without questioning. Now, it is recognized that the individual is transferred into a world with the effect of what he is seeing. New opportunities that design masses have already been activated and are processing. The modern man was hit precisely from his pupil. With a hypnotic state, he has falling asleep between his own reality and images. This process is an ideal environment to encode and control him. The mass, pre-designed by secret codes that will take action in the appropriate condition is ready now and the intervention has started. However, the condition of being dependent of the eye is continuing to entangle the individual in the state of a sleepwalker. In fact, “the decision of the eye”, which means the amount determined through the estimation of the eye, measurement or rationing conducted with the eye, has passed the limits and its focus. The way to exit from this situation is possible through the intervention with not only to the visible reality but also with perceiving minds. Now, it is necessary to wake up from the isolation of the virtual environment, to evolve and turn into the reality itself. Yaygara, with an understating of clamor, will and attitude that is questioning the authority, settling a score with the actual reality, reveals the issue of the real fact, which elevate the alternative characteristics of the individual and the diversity in social space, it will try to reveal the decision of the mind and conscience of contemporary artists. 9 GÖZ KARARI: YAYGARA İÇİN BİR KATALOG YAZISI HAKKI ENGİN GİDERER G öz Kararı: Ölçülerek ya da tartılarak değil göz ile oranlanarak belirlenen (miktar). Ali Püsküllüoğlu, Türkçe Sözlük, Yapı Kredi Yayınları, s: 674, İstanbul, 1995. muz “görsel sanatlar” ve “görsel kültür”le gerçeği daha iyi anlamaya çalışırken tutkularımız, çıkarlarımız uğruna onun üzerini örtmekteyiz. “Göz kararı “ yöntemi bir aceminin elinde kötü bir sonla bitebilir. Ustanın, deneyim sahibi, o işi defalarca deneyip başarılı olmuş birinin zamandan kazanmak amacıyla başvurduğu bir yöntemdir. Televizyonda yemek yapmayı öğreten gurme aşçılar genellikle izleyiciye kaşık, fincan ve bardak ölçeğini sunarlar ama kendileri bunları pek kullanmazlar. Yaptıkları işte güvenimizi kazanmaları önemlidir. Anneme tarif sorduğumda bir ölçek gösteremez, yemek malzemelerini göz kararıyla tencerenin içine koyar ama yemekleri lezzetlidir. Bu yazıyı yazarken onun “anne” olmadan önceki yemeklerini ve televizyondaki aşçıların göz kamaştıran yemeklerinin lezzetlerini merak ettim. İyi görünen her yemek lezzetli midir? 11 EYEBALL ESTIMATE: A CATALOG WRITING FOR FUSS HAKKI ENGİN GİDERER Eyeball estimate is the quantity determined by guessing with eye not by measuring or weighing. Ali Püsküllüoğlu, Turkish Dictionary, Yapi Kredi Publications, p:674, Istanbul, 1995. The method of “eyeball estimate” may be over with a bad end in the hands of a novice. It is a method applied by the master, the one who has tried it repeatedly and become successful in order to save time. The gourmet chefs who teach cooking on TV usually offer spoon, cup and glass as measurement tools but they do not use them much. It is important that they gain our confidence in what they do. When I ask my mother for a recipe, she doesn’t give a scale, she puts the ingredients by eyeball estimation into the pan but her food is delicious. While I was writing this article, I wondered my mother’s food before she was a mother and the taste of the dazzling foods of the chefs on TV. Is all the food looking good delicious? My mother has never made foods that look as beautiful and fresh as the foods in the coke commercials shown in Ramadan. A freshly picked French fries, for example. Seeing represents only one dimension of the truth. We rely much on what we see. No wonder to say “I sat with my own eyes”. We test the truth with our eyes. Michalangelo Antonioni, in his film “Blow-up” shot in 1960s, tells how miserable we are against the truth we saw or don’t saw with our eyes and beside the truth lying under the lens in a camera that we sometimes trust more than our eyes. What we know, our requirements and our previous experiences, with the help of our senses, are filtered through what we have learned as the right from the community. The seen is what the individual sees. We interpret the truth we saw within the framework of what we know. The more we review well, the more the truth lights up. Today, while we try to understand the truth better with “visual arts” and visual culture” we set up with our eyes that is sensible to a 12 small area known as “the visible light” in electromagnetic spectrum, we cover the truth for the sake of our benefits. To cope with the city, to see the city life politically, to live as an artist in the city and to perform these with art. The founders of Fuss tell its policy in this way. It works as a contemporary art initiative with the irony in its name -screaming on the excuse of something trivial- loudly, by sharing, willing to draw attention, addressing the details and problems in the city life and art. Other important choices in the name of “fuss” are “contemporary art” and “taking responsibility” for the community. As you know, the difficulties in getting to work by choosing “contemporary arts” even the name of which is a subject of debate in our country’s art environment, as an art category, and taking the responsibility with this tool is obvious. I, as someone who paints and writes about art in fifties, understand the followings when the contemporary art is mentioned: First of all, it is a category that “young” generation choose and they want to work in. It is the art of a generation who wants to work freely with the materials and topics of the time in which they live, who can react more quickly by following the problems of daily life without excluding the traditional arts and materials of traditional arts completely. It is an art that has a brotherhood relation with Fluxus, Conceptual Art, Video Art, Performance Art, Installation Art, etc, that addresses not only to eye but also to our other senses, that deals with the environment, human body, economy, art market, museum and the place of art which are changed by the people who manage the world and art in a critical approach. It is an art that wants to capture the richness in the truth with an interest to every discipline and every field of life and art, that tries to increase our awareness about the truth by combining different disciplines, that is close to theory, photography, writing and saying just like its other siblings. It is known and written that “Contemporary Art”; falls into the trap of the power that it is oppose to, is accepted as a member after being mummified by the dominators; falls into the clutches of the outrage of money and market; ends up in the pits opened by the enemies while creating new steps; creates similar organizations to those it criticizes. The story of Dada so much resembles to what is happening today. No matter the result is, Dada is the lion lying in the hearts of all. Their cry is still in the ears today. I think that we have nothing to hold on but the art that floats from our hands when it is defined, that finds new forms and solutions. The artists and those who hear the screams of artists are the ones who criticize, change, distort and make the fastest. The reason of why I prefer to say scream instead of sense, thinking, empathy or intuition is the noise of the era and the overwhelming pressure of capitalism and human (artist) over the art. It is the supply of what the fuss seekers know and what they try to express. It also should be noted that the man/woman in the cave has an impact on this scream. The art can escape from the complex patterns of life when it is reduced to an ambulance siren. It may become useless against the details of life. Calmness and maybe sharing that is necessary to make the side of contemporary art that tries to shorten and destroy the distance between at and life that imitate the truth today which is already difficult to reveal visible can be obtained with cooperation and civilized discussion. Dealing with the nature of the studies that are created, transferred instead of the name and to take them in a critical approach may turn our eyes to reality. It may treat out eyes that were turned into a dustbin of image that were anesthetized. Our eyes the see sexy clip stars dancing with their tattoos and the latest fashion clothes singing sings with meaningless lyrics in front of the historical, old, sear, walls seem like non-figurative paintings -even the walls are simulative- can discover why we like the music that do not exist and where something dead takes its life from. We can realize how our eyes are deceived. If we go back to the issue of eyeball estimate, the issue of mastery and inexperience. Mastery is dangerous as well as it is a position of glory. A master chef may be someone who is frozen, repeating himself, can’t see his front, don’t search for other foods, tired but be someone who put the salt and other spices accurately. Here, I have to mention Turgut Uyar. “However, the inexperience. Sire inexperience. You get a stone. You begin to carve it. You throw it when it starts to take shape. Another stone, and another. Finally, you will have a pile of half-formed stones. Perhaps others like and finish them. But, when you get each stone, your strength, your love, your fear is new and fresh. You work with the pleasure of having concerns about being unsuccessful.” “What is important in that we often face the visual translations of issues that can easily be described with a column in the exhibitions of Contemporary Art artists, and that we leave there with dynamic, exciting but missing, half decisions. A new way means inexperience. It is also the same in painting and sculpture, in a place where there is no breath, the ones who lance first are painters and sculptors. There had been time in which we burn the machines while we wanted to get rid of bourgeoisie. Those who make this choice will solve the problems of “Contemporary Art”. Till they convey completely what they want to convey. The one who wants to convey is someone who is fearless. What happens in the end? The spices would e a little more or less. In cold blood, cleaning the grass in front of our eyes, questioning what we see. Perhaps, a scream is required at first in order to be noticed in the middle of this crowd. 13 KENT ÖYKÜLERİ ANLATAN GÖZ/KARARI İMGELER Nevin YALÇIN BELDAN “ Göz, dünyayı görür.” der Merleau-Ponty. Gerçekten de sanatçıya gizil alanların tüm kapılarını açan göz, makul sınırlar içerisinde kalmayı reddeder. Sanatçı gözüne güvenir. Her şey, retinanın o bitmek bilmeyen döngüsüne takılıp kalır. 15 EYE/BALLED IMAGES TELLING URBAN STORIES Nevin YALÇIN BELDAN “The eye sees the world” says Merleau-Ponty. Indeed, the eye, opening all the gates of the areas of enigma, refuses to stay within the reasonable limits. The artist counts on the eye. Everything is stuck in the never-ending cycle of the retina. And, the artist, makes the invisible visible by discovering it from those inevitable and crazy globes of vision, and from this huge light attacts. Witnesses Taking Eye/balled Notes In his book “Beyond the Pleasure Principle”, Freud scrutinizes a person’s physical and emotional challenge using only the will power with the concept of ‘reality principle’. Freud says ‘modern comfort impulse is an extremely dangerous impulse. If it is not subjected to periodic crises, it increases the risk of illness of the organism as a result of the lack of stimulation. The larger version of these disturbing results, which Freud dealt with in terms of biological effects, is considered as the ‘cognitive dissonance”. The artist who relies on his or her eyeballing, in fact, takes notes to emphasize precisely this ‘cognitive dissonance’ inspiring people from their deep sleep created by the impulse of comfort, to raise social awareness, to make it appear the utopias designed as an alternative for humans. They take notes which confirm the hypothesis of the nature and which release the sound of insight. Eye/balled Monologues John Milton, in his novel “Paradise Lost” based on a religious myth, refers to the social dimensions of personal displacement. He narrates about the forward step of personal 16 awareness from the ignorant, innocent and obedient state which inactives the body and the mind to the physical and mental emancipation. And as a result of it, he recounts the penalty paid for it. The Old Testament narrates the sorrowful awakening of old people and their dismission from the innocent lukewarmness of heaven. The human, however, wakes up and becomes conscious when he comes into the world. He realizses that nothing is perfect including himself. Because, from now on, they are not the children of God…because they did not obey the rules…. and because they were sent away from the excellent state and from the comfort of balanced rhythm of heaven. Therefore, the human who is away from this comfort which he could not fit into, starts to recognise himself and discovers his real nature. Man, as considering the physical and cognitive disabilities, his awareness increases. He tries to understand the other’s difference, begins to see the mistakes. As a matter of fact, physical awareness develops social understanding. However, considering our present day, our modern urban experiences are the symptoms that we were alienated from this insight so much and we live in a detached state of awareness. We cannot aware of the kind of process of normalization we are getting through while trying to create a culture of diversity and while trying to be modern individuals. We cannot be alert to the transformation of mega cities that offer us endless geometries into an ill-omened eddy. We cannot see how the global system throws away the masses and individuals that refuse to be the part of their plans and its functioning system. We do not live in paradise, but we live a different version of the ritual of the risks of expulsion from the paradise. Modern individual, with the sense of speed and individualism, is ceased to bond and is dulled in the minutely planned neigbouhoods of rising metropolises and in the dwellings where we constantly questioning our sense of belonging. Life itsef is measured continuously. The ways of the masses are lit by artificial lights, but individuals, in fact, cannot exactly see. All kinds of planned decision-making is dealt within the a sanction and after a while, people are starting to feel it natural, just like an illusion. People are leaned to assimilate. The system, however, while including all of these individuals in its menu, opens up space for new comers. Societies are conditioned to transformations that they are not ready for. Those who want to go forward with their own inherent eyeballing and those who listens to their own monologues are ignored. However, isn’t the nature, alone, a sign of awe-inspiring and eyeballed design? balled and natural advance which is inherent in the nature of man. By looking ahead, they suggest a progress with a natural impetus with the help of the power we possess. They suggest to shape our geography without shortening our vision of the world and without being exposed to the pre-determined goals. And… In this exhibition, the artists visualize an effective critique of measured sanctions with an elegant expression from different angles, with different materials in the presense of an eyeballed aesthetic which inherent to art, leaving the key questions in the minds of the audience. YAYGARA, on the other hand, refreshes the memories and reminds with reference of art and by looking back, instead of generating ‘hygienic collective memories.’ They open the door of unnoticed isolation in the ceasuras of visual estimated nostalgia. On the other hand, by looking today, through the agency of their art, they remind the individual who were desired to squeeze into the ‘lack of paradox areas’ an eye17 GÖZ ÜZERİNE GÖZ’DEN HAREKETLE FIRAT ARAPOĞLU Y aygara Güncel Sanat İnisiyatifi’nin “Göz Kararı” teması ile açacakları serginin konsept metnini ilk okuduğumda, temelde üç ana eksen etrafında sorunsallaştırılan bir yapının inşa edilmekte olduğunu algıladım: Göz’ün kendi gerçeğini oluşturması, göz’ün baskı altına alınarak, koşullandırılması ve göz’ün özgür bırakılmasında sanatın ve sanatçının rolü. 19 ON THE EYE BY MOVING FROM THE EYE FIRAT ARAPOĞLU When I first read the concept text of the exhibition of Yaygara Contemporary Art initiative under the concept of “Sense of Proportion”, I perceived the construction of a structure based on three main axes: The eye forming its own reality, conditioning of the eye with pressure and the role of the art and the artist in the act of setting the eye free. I would like to share some of my thoughts on this matter abiding by to these three axes. The mentioning of the eye forming its own reality can be read by the cooperation of science. Science can be defined as “reaching reality with elective methods”. The thing that is clear here is, everyone using their own truth on reaching the reality- whatever this reality may be!-. Art history as a science field composes a brilliant example for this. One of the things most the art historians criticized for is their choosing specific works in the construction of an era and discarding the others. This means leaving other names and artworks that already exists out of the loop in the pursuit of constructing “self-reality”. Thus in basic, this selectivity is a selection in the manner of choosing the subjects as a whole, to build a discourseputting a thesis together. Therefore if this choice has an equipped system, it is named as “method”. The eye will 20 form its own reality with this consensus. The importance of the eye is clear at the point of constructing the decision of mind and conscience but the mind and ear should not be forgotten. Badly conditioned mind will bend the truth that it sees to its eye what truth that may be; a badly conditioned ear also can change in its own will what it hears. Pressuring the eye, can be seen specifically in the periods that a new seeing form is being constructed. The visual images world of our today stands in front of us as most rightfully. Perry Anderson specified as the flowing of “The Niagara Falls of Images”. The thing that gets us to think over mostly in this process is the duration of “looking at the images”. If we consider that people look at the artwork mostly in between the time of 20 to 60 seconds- which is a very optimistic figure- it is a necessity that these images should be looked at in a manner of Politics rather than “Art”. However, “the image” politics that the governments try to impose according to their power ratio is being deconstructed by or being turned inside out at least by art. This is the strategy of moving the “aura” and the scream that have been forming around the images. The answer to “what use art serves” lies here. This is the power of art: Making a phenomenon become visible or creating an awareness as well as breaking down the frequency of the message by warping the visual of a phenomenon like a “Jammer”. Lastly, I would like to refer the role of art and the artist on the freedom of the eye. We could encipher the role of art like I have specified above. Rather than constructing the visualizing forms-which will be too pretentious and may create a totalitarianism from the reverse- presenting thousands of image styles democratically to the audience. The role of the artist is to humbly show one of the possible way to reading the art from thousands of other ways to read to the audience. After some point this can be considered as the same that the scientists do. If we accept that those two have their own way to produce knowledge, we can say that the pressure and the limitation politics can be lifted from the “eye” of Humanity. I would like to point an avangardist utopia on the future of seeing; but it seems like a timelessnes that cannot be turned back from even to some artists in this a-politic, cynic environment! English Translation: Orhan ERKAL 21 GEZGİN KULÜBE VE BİR ŞEHİR HARİTASI SERKAN DEMİR B ağımsız sanatçı inisiyatiflerinin kendini var etme modellerini ve formüllerini düşündüğümde, Yaygaranın kendini gerçekleştirdiği en etkili aracın, yaptığı düzenli sergiler olduğu kanısına varıyorum. Bütün bunlara rağmen 23 MOBILE COTTAGE / A LOCAL MAP SERKAN DEMİR When I think about self-existance forms and techniques of independent artist initiatives, I figure out that the most effective self-existance instrument of Fuss is its regular demonstrations. Fuss, through this structure -rhythmic demonstrations- is a way of pronunciation, composes a dynamic that increases productivity on a kind of ‘Social Diffusion’ foresight or places and situations where a thought can go. How much these regular demostrations can force the possibility of a new mental interaction? How this can develop the ways of acting together? What can be its contribution for realization of the stream defined as social diffusion? Probably, the roles, are taken and will be taken by Fuss and similar formations or initiatives, will determine the responses of these questions. If we think that contemporary art activities creat moments outside the rhythms of daily life and private free areas, we can obviously say that cultural tests and the ways of critizing the alienation of the city life and transforming of urban area pass by these created areas. For an artist who consider city as a cultural instrument, in order to found a correct relationship between the audience and the environment, the effect created by the initiatives 24 is the better way rather than the created opportunities. In these demonstrations, Fuss not only discovers the cultural practicals and object related to city, but also wants to evaluate and understand various things which are the pieces of city history. Thus, it doesn’t believe establishments’ static results of this evaluation process. The moments and areas where the art has a visibility, not only create private areas to establish micro communities, but also facility the development of idea exchange. The city evolution most likely exists in these areas. The density of these areas (will be created) will inevitably modify to the city. If we look at this regular demonstration form, which is the self-exhibition instrument of Fuss, with this aspect, it will be better. Because a city outside trying to be rapidly reconstructed with all of its specificity, distortion and drone. At that present moment, Fuss doesn’t neglect the grammar of city while it aims to regulation of its own dynamics in the social. It also reviews the terms of city’s interference. It has to look for own culvert, audience and participant. Whilst this realization, it doesn’t forget some of the concerns. Its main concern is being in touch with its environment without self-closing and help the creation of new structures. Trying to understand city’s language and speaking that language, with the idea of art is relational at various levels and a kind of mediator or connection founder, is one of the simplest moves that we should pay attention. In this context, the Fuss has potential of collect to the structures and communities around a cottage. It constantly refreshes this cottage’s address which interrogates to the established relationships and the inherent opportunities, transforms and is mobile because of being open to the all participatory projects. The present cottage in the definition of Fuss is the Mobile Cottage that initiated, positioned and filed itself. There is an educational area. All effort is creating an atmosphere of aloud thinking in that cottage and preparing the basement of a mediation will be founded with all of the other civil and independent associations. Fuss imagines an idea mountain to climb in this cottage. Unfortunately, none of us know where we can exactly find the today’s conditions of such a dream, but these thought and effort are the necessary instruments of the ‘Despite everything’ process. us. Despite all of them, we can see civil initiatives, artistic groups and practices, which became the parts of city with recent general cultural transformations, began to be various. Consequently, contemporary art activities in a city can be an instrument of meeting different urban groups together and a refreshment place to the communication among these groups. At the same time, ıt should be able to direct the art scene that has no criticism to think about its own existance. Because the city or our environment is absolutely one of the most important factors that an individual refers and determines his stance and position when he compose his ideas related to life. It appears not only as a whole regarded its physical limits, but also its sociological limits. With this purpose, we wish the city wouldn’t be a relegation area. All of us desire to find a way on a real local map and to mark the Mobile Cottage on this map. With the Adorno’s words of ‘Wrong life cannot be lived rightly’ which he wrote in ‘Minima Moralia’ half a century ago, I guess thinking about the translation forms of our lives to us will be the common denominator for all of 25 ‘HER ŞEYİ GÖREN GÖZ’ÜN KARARI ŞEVKET ARIK B ir kavram olarak ‘Göz Kararı’ üzerini düşünceler üretirken, aslında Göz’ün bir sembol olarak insanlık tarihinin önemli bir parçası olduğunu ve sembolik açılımlarının çok yönlü olanaklarını fark ettim. It is seen that there are many interpretations considered in terms of mithology and history. In general there are meanings like divine meanings as absolute power of God, protective power of God or humanity maenings as awareness, existence, seeing, wisdom, intellectual power and mindfulness. Also in terms of art, the conceptual basis of seeing period which forms a basis for reality, virtuality, optical illusion, esthetics and designing. The idea “The Eye That Sees Everything” is the basic of seeking an objective god and reaches to present from the beginning of history of humanity that seeks god in the universe. When eye is taken as historical symbol, it was symbolized as a quality of godlikeness and intuitional vision that sees and knows everything and is accepted as the source of knowledge. Eye is not just considered as an organ that receives vision, it also has a quality of passage that the light and beams are transferred and a symbolic door that the transfer of existence and feelings occur. When the symbolic and mithologic meanings of eye are studied; The symbol of eye defines mystical eye as well; represents the light, enlightining, knowledge, mind, awareness, protection, reliability of intention and the limitation of the seen one as well.1 The most important meaning is “The Eye of Horus” which takes place in Egypt Mythology. The eye of Horus, in terms of morality, symbolizes that nothing can escape the eye of conscience and the hawkeye of this merciless judge who does not keep an eye out every 28 intention in human’s soul and every behaviour in life. This is the eye of conscience that does not close and keeps open for 24 hours.1 The basis of the idea of seeing that is defined as the absolute power of God watching the whole universe, tells the story of the bad and the good eye as the absolute migration of the bad, the reality of object itself and the construction of fictional reality in our minds. Here we should tell the focussing of sects which are the secret centres of imperialism, on controlling and observing eye symbol and their effort to have the command to design societies. The idea of observing eye used in movies starts to move from the cameras in streets and watching from satellites towards replacing an eye on back of every man’s head. It is enough to suppress the individual by putting the idea of being watched in his mind. Under these circumstances, there is a need of determination of crowds who maliciously design their free area and live their freedom over the idea of absolute existence. When we evaluate the perception forms of eye from a different point, we understand that everything shapes over visual perception. What people see and mean is always an ambiguous situation where images are presented to minds as indicators with oppressive effect. The popular culture images are placed hardly to perception of the eye then an adapted memory to consumption area is designed. It is necessary to indicate that the effective role is media oriented. We see a structure stamping indicators on our eye of what and how we consume and then creates habits that guide our mind and feelings. Here there needed decision of eye which knows what to watch and protects itself from dependency to this hyptonic area. The reality of images in the area of “The Eye That Sees Everything” reshape in the new virtual world. There is an eye which cannot understand exactly what to perceive somewhere between the image of reality and the reality of image. The eye turns into an open receiver. It only watches and records. However, the recording situation does not allow time and opportunity for it to test its memory and this situation continues. Here the determination of the eye which is the follower of reality is necessary. When we look at “The decision of Eye” in today’s art environment which tries to move in realm of necessity of visual perception, the direct tie of visual arts with the eye imprisons it to perceptive games of the eye. There is the effect of seeing in many of the approaches in art history. In this regard the idea of deceiving the eye generated with perspective, always plays its game on eye. The reation between eye and light, composition approaches, search of ration and proportion, minimalist detailedness, cubist approaches, the perception of light and colour in fovist colouring, the reality of virtual image in surrelism, escaping from eye and the idea of attitudinize in Dada, playing on pupil in optical art, searching of eye discipline with hyperrealist extremism, the bombardment of imagery and images in pop and then with the meeting of digital images, the adventure of eye continues. In all this period the eye continues for its search of decision. In our present art environment there are approaches which continues to vary and overflows the eye. However, there is a reality that the similarity of present approaches and fashion put forth, is how the interventions on eye also effect the artists. Based upon material exploration, reinterpretation of objects which have already created popular memory, a complete shambles that legalize everything in order to maintain its existence. I hope, here, many eyes can really find a way to reach decision. “The decision of eye” which turns out a search of an appearance of a will, becomes skilled with wisdom and experiences and begins to see. It finds the reality, learns to choose, develops its sense of direction to localize itself, follows realm of freedom, searches ways to be original, looks directly into the eye that follows and constructs its willpower. The existence claim of visible one is also the responsibility of the eye that sees it. If the idea of God exists for being seen one day, the period continues with our will to see him one day. If we meet with God one day, it will happen with “The Decision of Eye” that sees him. A group of people who spend all time as a refugee are in the mood of being cheesy, tiresome, annoying and always repeat itself, the most important of all, being the other person or persons. Although there is apparently no reason to be refugees, we see that people enter into a behavior, such as being a refugee. The conditioning created by naming the work as ‘refugee’ triggers the revival of refugee judgement in our minds. Reconciliation of an artistic design with reality derives from a prejudice the same as the reality. This shows our potent on the construction of life rather than the life itself. The people who live the life they don’t want converts the life into a fictional experience or an artistic display. No longer, being a refugee is an action settling into the life as a weekend activity or an instant performance. Marcus Graf ...In Mehmet Ali Uysal’s oeuvre, space, and here especially the white cube of the gallery, is always a major factor, as it is an inseparable part of his sculptural installations, objects, photos and videos. Inside the white cube, the artist analyzes how the process of creating and viewing art is connected to the time and place of its production and displacement. Trombolinden sıçrayan figür coğrafik doğal düzlemlerin siyasal geometrik çizgilerle müstemleke edilişini ve devletlerin özne üretme arzularına kaçışın oyunlaştırılma haline denk düşüyor. Devletler pürtüklü, tanımlanabilir, alanların kontrolü üzerine bina ettiği tikelliklerini, kaygan zeminden gelen, “hayaletler”e (Derrida) yani göçmenler, mülteciler, azınlıkları dahil olunamayacak yüceliklerle(muteber vatandaşlık) arasına hatlar ve katmanlar yaratarak sınırın içinde ve ötesinde üst anlatılar kurarak sürdürür. Figür, oyun mantığı içinde katı göstergeleri geçirgen bir duruma getirerek hat’ın kendi tarafında üretilmiş “üst anlatısı”ından, kimlikten, özne’den feragat etmenin, düşsel bir yoruma kavuşturuyor. Mahmut Wenda Koyuncu The study of Ceper is based on the attempt to overcome of a political icon which is feeding from a inexhaustible capitalist theology (nation-state) with a surreal intelligence. Figure bouncing from trampoline is equal to being done as a colonial of natural geographic planes with geometrical lines of political and the statement of making a story into a game of escaoing of the states’ desires to produce the subject. The states go on their particularities which they established on the control of the rough, defined areas with creating lines and layers except forming of “ghosts (Derrida) “meaning migrants, refugees, minorities and by establishing top narratives inside and outside the limits. Figure is demystifying to an imaginary review of relinquishing from the identity and subject, from “top-narrative” which has been produced on the own side of the Line inside in the logic of the game by making the solid indicators to a permeable form. I make use of my artistic means of expression, drawing, sculpture, performance, installation and photography, to reflect the social structures of a multicultural society. With my work I enable people to experience border areas and to do something which normally would not be part of their lives. The people as well as I myself take on the roles of visitors, spectators, audience or participants; they are transformed into these positions during my work’s progress. Through my deep artistic involvement with cultures political and religious themes inevitably become involved. In my case this can lead to serious confusion. When I speak of the beauty of the woman I am allocated to homosexual love. If I display the Turkish Islamic reward of paradise I become a feminist hostile to Islam. If I address arranged marriages I turn into a freedom combatant to some and a betrayer to others. Neither nor! A desire for an agreement as extensive as possible connect politics and religion in all cultures and value-systems. The human being as an individual is subordinated to society. The everyday marginalizations and delimitations are universal, independently from cultural area they become instrumentalized, rejected and applied for own gain. On the other hand, it was the war time and a huge number of warriors were going to the war, my uncle’s friend was one of them. He left one day and never came back, my fishes also didn’t come back. My childhood and adolescence was coincided with Iran-Iraq war, one of the tragedies of human history in twentieth century, a war that was supposed to break the back of Iran in three days; but taking too long, at least it could steal my childhood from me earlier than I deserved. Successively, awful sound of bombs, to repeat and repeat this slogan… War, war until… victory! war continued and all the time we expected uncertain accidents, with this slogan which we used to repeat it every morning at school, the ruins was ours with endless sequence that we were involved. Tıpkı Sarkis’in şimdi bizim gözlerimizin içine baktığı gibi… Nevin YALÇIN BELDAN ‘‘ÖZİL KOLEKSİYONUN İZNİYLE’’ ‘‘PERMISSION OF THE ÖZIL COLLECTION’’ Başlangıçta Baş / The Beginning The Head , Video,1998 POETICS OF SARKİS IN THE TIMBRE OF SOUND AND COLOUR Sarkis is an Eastern based artist…. Sarkis is a Western based artist… As a matter of fact, Sarkis is an artist who knows the morphology of East and West quite well and who articulates the synthesis of them in his installations, films and paintings. In the works of art of Sarkis, it is possible to go on a journey extending from the memory squeezed into the space and to the universal motifs from the artist’s own personal history. In some of his works, the artist sets forth with contrasts. However, he adds an intellectual atmosphere into the relationship of the contrasts rather than depicting an absolute ontological difference. In his works realized with architectural approach, he makes the viewer look out of the window of mentality and creates huge museums without walls. “Commencement la Tete” is one of the 25 films made by Sarkis in Sache. This one shot film starts with a short moment in which we hear the sound of the rain interfered with the silence of the night and the sound of a tiny bell. These moments that the sound of a cock interfered into the sound of the rain reminds the audience a night meeting a day. Then a head is drawn with a green watercolour. The tiny round eyes are added with the same colour again. After a short period of time, a red scratch is drawn in the forehead. By the way, red and green are the colours which the artist issued from one of his dreams long ago and with the inspiration of it, he used them in his paintings, installations and films. Shortly after that, left hand is shown in the picture. That hand that painted green, directs straight to the red scratch and presses his finger on it. Accompanied by the sound of the unceasing rain, our eyes follow the red flowing into the green. In this work we watch the rendition of the encounter of the timid, but calm purity of green with the severe expression of the most mature form of red and we watch the natural choreography which the sound is included in the show. We communicate both verbally and visually with the work. Therefore, the intelligence and knowledge which, composed its one of a kind iconography, makes this short film that lasts 2 minutes, 40 seconds exraordinary. Some works of art, beyond getting aesthetic pleasure, kindle the audience, make us feel the anxiety of conception behind the quantative matter and opens out the overlying deposits of memory. Some works of art and some of the artists desires to look just into the eyes of the viewer, rather than moving on a clear ground. Just like Sarkis, looking into our eyes now…. Nevin YALÇIN BELDAN 87 SERKAN DEMİR Bolu, Türkiye Son dönem ortaya koyduğu yapıtlarda, doğrudan coğrafik görüntünün karakteristiğini oluşturan bileşenler üzerine yoğunlaşır ve onları farklı bir sözdizimi disiplini içinde ele almaya çalışır. Genellikle bu bileşenler; ibadet mekanları, inanç objeleri, ruhani her türden ritüel, deneyimler, modern-geleneksel çaprazında ironiler, bunların gezintide olduğu sınır ötesi toplumsallıklar ve batı misafirperverliğidir. Generally these components are temples, belief objects, ritual experience, modern and traditional ironies, cross border sociality and the West hospitable. Serkan’s forms contribute in every sense. They contribute to knowledge. They contribute to culture, action, objections, words, meaning and theory. Shortly, he keeps in his mind not to imprison an imaginary existence and makes an attack to make this document visible. All these realities transform a critical language in his objects and are politicized by reducing certain model and construction. İntiba Serisi The Impression Series 92 Disli’s images are alluring, in quite an irrational way. The images are a writer’s nightmare; there are no quickly identifiable technical or compositional merits, the artist interweaves constructedness with found imagery in a seemingly haphazard manner, the visual voice is quite eclectic and there is nothing in the images that we have not seen before. Then, to predictably rely on Barthesian terms, where is the punctum? I think—and punctums are by definition subjective, so please bear with me—Disli’s photographs do not represent a single emotion or state, but rather multiple states and emotions and it is the poetics of this plurality that cause the viewer to waver between different states of mind and the impact is jarring. By this point in our oversaturated image culture, we are quite immune to one-liners, no matter how strong those one-liners may be. Unfortunately, I can look on an image of suffering or conflict or happiness with the same blasé attitude and move on. It is when I don’t know what to make of an image—when humor, sadness, nostalgia, childishness are all intertwined—that I will look for longer and remember what I saw. The poetry of Disli’s images is such that I will wonder why I keep looking at the images and I will not really know why they work, but they do; the lines of her poems are precise but cannot be memorized. He often started a sentence saying “Şeniz, look!” and made me to give my attention on interesting things he noticed around , such as interesting objects or landscape. Then he was starting to build up ideas on what we saw was imagining impossible possibilities. Then I was joining to him and a funny game was begining between us. İn this game objects could been transfered into the giant ones, could be removed from their actual space or lanscape could be changed in a condition of imposibility. Main excitement was the question of what would happen if the changes we imagined. According to the artist, our faces that reflect all kinds of social deficits cannot hide away our moods. The “ragged” and “troubled” moods of people reflect the spirit of our own times. In Timur Çelik’s these works it seems as if one stands at the doorstep of a “challenge”, a prospective social explosion. These people are melancholic, tense, sad and almost as if in trouble and distress, but never dangerous and aggressive. By incorporating into his works elements that emphasize humankind’s technological feats such as architectural bridges, subways, escalators that contribute deeply to the air and light, or simply, the spirit of the city where he is living, the artist points to the social environments and settings of people pictured in his portraits. They are the images that are now replacing photography. We have learned to trust the photographic image. Can we trust the electronic image? With painting everything was simple. The original was the original, and each copy was a copy – a forgery. With photography and then film that began to get complicated. The original was a negative. Without a print, it did not exist, just the opposite, each copy was the original. But now with the electronic, and soon the digital, there is no more negative and no more positive.
