Çocuklar evde annelerinin dönmesini beklerler. Haydutların gelmesiyle çocuklar evi terk ederler. Çocukları ormanda bulan yaşlı bir kadın onları yetimhanede çalışan Mahmut Efendi’ye teslim eder. Aradan üç sene geçer. Bir aile Maryam’ı evlat edinmek isteyince çocuklar yetimhaneden kaçarlar. Köylerine vardıklarında evlerinde artık yeni insanlar yaşamaktadır. Bedo and Maryam, two siblings, who have a passion for raising doves, live in a wealthy and happy household. One day the children save the life of a wounded blue bird and name him Maviş (Blue). Their happy home life is broken when the men of the house are taken away by the soldiers. Forbidden to go outside by their 137 members raise their glasses to make their Easter wishes. When it is their mother’s turn she says “Lord, don’t separate me from my children and may the fire on our stove never go out.” YİTİK KUŞLAR LOST BIRDS mother, the children run away to check up on their birds. When they reach the dovecote Bedo frees all the birds except Maviş who refuses to fly. On their return home with Maviş, they find the house empty, just like the village which has turned into a ghost town. They return home to wait for their mother. One night drunk bandits come in the house to steal the furniture, scared the children run out with Maviş. An old healer woman finds them in the woods and hands them to old man, Mahmut, who works at the orphanage. Three years pass by. One day, a family comes to the orphanage to adopt Maryam. The children decide to run away with Maviş, in order to stay together. When they finally reach their village they see smoke coming out of their chimney. Thinking their mother is back they knock on the door only to find the new inhabitants greeting them. At the same time Artamyan, a man sent by the parents who have reached Aleppo, arrives at the orphanage looking for Bedo and Maryam, along with other children. The children reach their old dovecote only to find it in ruins. Distressed and tired Maryam collapses. Bedo carries her to the police station and the soldiers take them back to the orphanage. Mahmut promises them that he will hide them and not let Maryam get adopted. The next morning he rushes them to the train station and hands the children to Artamyan at the last moment. At the crowded monastery garden in Aleppo, the children look for their mother. Maryam loosing all her hope scolds Maviş and blames the bird for all the disasters that have fallen upon them. She opens the door to the birdcage and tells him to go away but the bird refuses to fly. At that moment the children hear the sound of their mother’s voice singing their special lullaby. They run towards her voice and reunite with their mother and as they hug each other Maviş comes out of it’s cage and flies for the first time. We return to the olden days. All the family YÖNETMEN GÖRÜŞÜ DIRECTOR’S NOTE Tarihte yaşanılmış çeşitli olaylar, savaşlar, siyasi haritaların zaman içinde değişimi, güçlerin yer değiştirmesi genel ve yüzeysel bakış açılarıyla yansıtılır. YİTİK KUŞLAR LOST BIRDS reflected with a general and shallow point of view. When we read all this stuff, we get used to these facts in time and perceive them as ordinary things. Since I was a little boy, I have always interpreted history in my own way; hence each event would turn into a fantasy game for me. I used to dream of myself being a character in the story and imagine how I would react in similar conditions and what my decisions would be. This simple game of popularizing historical events to individual level thought me something: What matters is the story of individuals in the course of historical events, and in order to understand and interpret history better, you need to listen to these people’s stories and read. The main idea of the story is implied within a person’s feelings. I have come to a decision after listening to my grandmother’s stories and reading books written by Armenian authors who tell us about their memories: People tend to talk about their hometowns, families, neighbours and best memories. Even though they have seen harder times people tend to keep their fondest memories from the good old days . I wanted to emphasize what these two kids have gone through as a result of this forced emigration and they weren’t even there when it happened. Without actually showing the war, to make its presence felt is like ensuring that the audience puts himself/herself in someone else’s shoes and imagine things they have never seen before. My purpose is to open the audience’s eyes to long lost beauties and make them say “I wish that never happened” I also aim to build a bridge of friendship between the people once again. The change of historical events, battles, political maps and balance of power in the course of time, is a subject that is usually 138 139
