As part of a larger C sequestration project that focused on potential of C sequestration for standard and minimum tillage systems of irrigated crops, the effects of furrow irrigation on the field C and N loading were evaluated. Experiments were conducted on a laser-leveled 30 ha grower’s field in the Sacramento valley near Winters, CA. For the 2005 calendar year, water inflow and runoff was measured for all rainfall and irrigation events. Samples were analyzed for C and N associated with both sediment and dissolved fractions. 5 © 2012 R.B. Morgan Publisher - All rights reserved. . Environmental Science – Areas of Interest Air Pollution Air Pollution: Threat to Human Heart | TopNews New Zealand http://www.topnews.net.nz/content/212286-air-pollution-threat-human-heart Air pollution can act as a catalyst for heart attacks. A recent study by Tim Nawrot of Hasselt University in Belgium has unleashed another dimension of heart attack claiming that air pollution can be a potential threat to human heart. With medical experts citing alcohol, coffee, and physical exertion as the potential reasons of heart stroke, this study has sent alarming signals. . Citing the concern over the newly unveiled factor, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reportedly claimed that air pollution can be a serious threat for human health. . There are serious risks to health from exposure to PM and O3 in many cities of developed and developing countries. It is possible to derive a quantitative relationship between the pollution levels and specific health outcomes (increased mortality or morbidity). This allows invaluable insights into the health improvements that could be expected if air pollution is reduced. . Even relatively low concentrations of air pollutants have been related to a range of adverse health effects. . Poor indoor air quality may pose a risk to the health of over half of the world’s population. In homes where biomass fuels and coal are used for cooking and heating, PM levels may be 10–50 times higher than the guideline values. http://www.who.int/topics/air_pollution/en/ http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs313/en/index.html http://www.envirolink.org/topics.html?topic=Air%20Pollution&topicsku=2002116191137&topictype=subto pic&do=catsearch&catid=5 http://www.cdc.gov/air/ http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/airpollution/ 6 © 2012 R.B. Integrated Ocean Observing System IOOS The Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®) serves as the nation’s eye on our oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes. IOOS is a federal, regional, private sector, and academic partnership that tracks, predicts, manages, and adapts to changes in our marine environments. There are thousands of tools – from satellites above Earth to sensors below the water – that continuously collect ocean and coastal data. IOOS is the link that connects all these data. IOOS is expanding sources of data and increasing access to existing data to save users time and money, and is adopting and adapting standards and protocols – such as whether temperature is recorded in Celsius or Fahrenheit – in order to make data easier to use. Integrated ocean information is now available in near real time, as well as retrospectively. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/programs/ioos.html Marshes, forested wetlands, oyster reefs, seagrass beds, beaches, and tidal streams are vital habitats for fish, birds, and animals and humans, too! When these areas are damaged by events like hurricanes or oil spills, NOAA scientists explore restoration options to help return these fragile areas to how they were before the damage occurred. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/ecosystems/restoration/welcome.html 9 © 2012 R.B. Environmental Science – Areas of Interest Canyons - The Grand Canyon http://www.flickr.com/photos/grand_canyon_nps/ Principal Investigator: Kenneth L. Cole, USGS Colorado Plateau Research Station Summary: The ice age (Pleistocene) vegetation of the Grand Canyon has been determined through the analysis of plant fossils preserved in caves and fossil packrat middens. The past zonation of vegetation along the Colorado River from the Gulf of California to the state of Colorado has been reconstructed from these fossil deposits During the ice ages, plants escaped colder climates by growing at then-wetter sites about 2500 feet lower than they do today. Only the most extremly arid deserts, those now with less than 4 inches of rain per year, supported deserts during the ice ages. Most North American deserts were occupied by woodlands of juniper and/or pinyon pine. http://sbsc.wr.usgs.gov/cprs/research/projects/global_change/grdcany.asp About ten thousand year ago, the ice ages ended and the Holocene era began. The vegetation history and development of modern plant communities during the Holocene are not yet well understood because of the large changes occurring as the climate warmed and plant species migrated upward and northward toward their modern distributions. This project is now reconstructing the Holocene history of vegetation in the Grand Canyon and elsewhere on the southern Colorado Plateau. Knowledge of the past vegetational response to major warming is required to estimate the future response of vegetation to global warming. 10 © 2012 R.B. Morgan Publisher - All rights reserved. . According to the National Visitor Use Monitoring report released today by Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, national forests attracted 170.8 million recreational visitors and sustained approximately 223,000 jobs in rural communities this past year. National forests also provide economic relief for vacationers. Fewer than half of the U.S. Forest Service's 17,000 developed sites charge any fees for visitors. The report reveals that 94 percent of visitors were satisfied with their experience on the national forests. "Our national forests are some of the most beautiful and adventure-filled places in the world," said Tidwell. "The national forests give Americans a chance to build life-long memories for the price of food and gas. You'd be hard pressed to find any vacation destinations that offer better value." http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome?contentid=2011/08/0342.xml&contentidonly=true WHAT IS THE BOREAL FOREST? The boreal forest is the largest and northern most forest ecosystem in the world. The boreal forest is the predominant ecosystem in interior Alaska. Viewed from the air, this forest looks like a giant patchwork quilt or mosaic. Environmental Science – Areas of Interest Fossil Fuels and CO2 Human-Related Sources and Sinks of Carbon Dioxide U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report : 1990-2014 Report https://www3.epa.gov/climatechange/ghgemissions/usinventoryreport.html A variety of human activities lead to the emission (sources) and removal (sinks) of carbon dioxide (CO 2): The largest source of CO2 emissions globally is the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas in power plants, automobiles, industrial facilities and other sources. Fossils fuels - Nutrient Pollution https://www.epa.gov/nutrientpollution/sources-and- solutions-fossil-fuels A number of specialized industrial production processes and product uses such as mineral production, metal production and the use of petroleum-based products can also lead to CO2 emissions. Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and sequestration (CCS) is a set of technologies that can greatly reduce CO2 emissions from new and existing coal- and gas-fired power plants and large industrial sources. CCS is a three-step process that includes: . Capture of CO2 from power plants or industrial processes . Transport of the captured and compressed CO2 (usually in pipelines). . Underground injection and geological sequestration (aka - storage) of the CO2 into deep underground rock formations. Carbon sequestration is the process by which growing trees and plants absorb or remove CO2 from the atmosphere and turn it into biomass (e.g., wood, leaves, etc.). Deforestation, conversely, can lead to significant levels of CO 2 emissions in some countries. Carbon dioxide can be captured from power plants and industrial facilities before it is released into the atmosphere, and then injected deep underground. . http://www.epa.gov/energy/ Ecosystems Science Eco Systems Research https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/ Climate Change Science https://www3.epa.gov/climatechange/science/ Climate Change Research https://www.epa.gov/climate-research Water & Climate Change Research https://www.epa.gov/water-research/water-and-climate-change-research Economics of Biofuels https://yosemite.epa.gov/ee/epa/eed.nsf/3cdbd09d7c867d9785256c9200548b12/6aea5b22e5dd813785257bf6008170cd!opendocument Reduce your Methane Emissions https://www3.epa.gov/gasstar/methaneemissions/index.html Coal Bed Methane Outreach Program (CMOP) https://www3.epa.gov/cmop/ Natural Gas STAR (Methane Challenge Program) https://www3.epa.gov/gasstar/ Dreg & Fill Wetlands https://www.epa.gov/cwa-404/section-404-permit-program 15 © 2012 R.B. Rather than geopolitical boundaries and departmental divisions, this approach calls for creative partnerships that look at natural boundaries, such as watersheds, as the unit of management. An ecosystem approach involves the following principles: It includes the whole system, and not just parts of it . Focuses on interrelationships among the components of the environment and between living and non-living things’ . Includes consideration of the natural environment, society and economy. . Is based on natural geographic units such as watersheds. . Incorporates the concepts of sustainability. . Respects species other than humans and generations other than the present. 17 © 2012 R.B. Environmental Science – Areas of Interest Marshes Salt Marshes and Mangrove Forests Mangroves forming a wall along Florida inlets http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/mangroves.html Salt marshes are a mosaic of snaking channels called tidal creeks that fill with seawater during high tides and drain during low tides. Fish species including flounder and mullet live most of their lives in marsh creeks. Salt marshes are salty because they are flooded by seawater every day. They are marshy because their ground is composed of peat. Peat is made of decomposing plant matter that is often several feet thick. Peat is waterlogged, root-filled, and very spongy. Because salt marshes are waterlogged and contain lots of decomposing plant material, oxygen levels in the peat are extremely low—a condition called hypoxia. Hypoxia promotes the growth of bacteria which produce the rotten-egg smell that is attributed to marshes and mud flats. Salt marshes are covered with salt-tolerant plants, or halophytes, like salt hay, black rush, and smooth cordgrass. Many mangrove forests can be recognized by their dense tangle of prop roots that make the trees appear to be standing on stilts above the water. This tangle of roots allows the trees to handle the daily rise and fall of tides, which means that most mangroves get flooded at least twice per day. The roots also slow the movement of tidal waters, causing sediments to settle out of the water and build up the muddy bottom. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/kits/estuaries/media/supp_estuar06a_saltmarsh.html 20 © 2012 R.B. Environmental Science – Areas of Interest Plains USGS photo of typical prairie grassland The Interior Plains is a vast region that spreads across the stable core (craton) of North America. This area had formed when several small continents collided and welded together well over a billion years ago, during the Precambrian. Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks now form the basement of the Interior Plains and make up the stable nucleus of North America. With the exception of the Black Hills of South Dakota, the entire region has low relief, reflecting more than 500 million years of relative tectonic stability. The Interior Plains continued to receive deposits from the eroding Rocky Mountains to the west and Appalachian and Ozark/Ouachita Mountains to the east and south throughout the most recent Era, the Cenozoic. The flatness of the Interior Plains is a reflection of the platform of mostly flat-lying marine and stream deposits layed down in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Eras. http://geomaps.wr.usgs.gov/parks/province/intplain.html Plains High Plains Water-Level Monitoring Study (HPWLMS) http://ne.water.usgs.gov/ogw/hpwlms/ 21 © 2012 R.B. Environmental Science – Areas of Interest TOXIC RIVERS Gulch, Colo., (Upper Arkansas River Watershed) the location of USGS . IMAGE SOURCE PAGE: http://toxics.usgs.gov/photo_gallery/aml_page4.html The occurrence of toxic substances in surface and ground waters is a threat to human health and aquatic life. Contaminants from gasoline, pesticides, sewage, cleaning solvents, and trace metals are harmful to humans in very low concentrations. For example, 1 gallon of trichloroethylene (a cleaning solvent) can contaminate 290 million gallons of water beyond safe drinking-water limits. The General Accounting Office has stated, "the dimensions and potential costs of cleaning up our environment are so great that, without innovative technologies, we may find the solution cost prohibitive and impacting on our ability to address other national needs." By using current technologies, the costs of remediating Superfund and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act sites, Federal facilities, and other known hazardous waste sites may total $750 billion over the next 30 years (Russel and others, 1991). The Toxic Substances Hydrology Program (Toxics Program) provides the unbiased earth science information on the behavior of toxic substances in the Nation's surface and ground waters that is needed to avoid human exposure, to develop effective remedial strategies, and to prevent further contamination. The program has three major components: . Intensive Site Investigations of specific types of toxic substances. . Regional Investigations of the toxic substances related to typical land uses. . Development of Methods for the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data related to toxic substances. http://water.usgs.gov/wid/html/toxic.html 23 © 2012 R.B. Point sources of water pollution are stationary locations such as sewage treatment plants, factories and ships. Non-point sources are more diffuse and include agricultural runoff, mining activities and paved roads. Under the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program controls water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States. EPA works with state and local authorities to monitor pollution levels in the nations water and provide status and trend information on a representative variety of ecosystems. http://www.epa.gov/ebtpages/watewaterpollution.html 24 http://coralreef.noaa.gov/threats/pollution/ © 2012 R.B. But now, Oscar the alligator will be immortalized in the swamp he called home for nearly a century. Bone by bone, the aged star has been brought back to life, thanks to Don Berryhill, who, along with Jim Brewer pieced the bones together like a massive puzzle. Oscar was estimated to be about 100 years old. I've put together a lot of skeletons, but nothing like this," said Berryhill. He says Oscar the alligator had more than 500 bones in his body. They're very old bones, since he lived here long before the park was built in 1945. Today the vast majority of the Swamp Park's alligator population are directly linked to Oscar as offspring....a part of Oscar lives on through them. http://www.okeswamp.com/about-the-park/oscar Swamps are forested wetlands. They may border a river with moving water, or occupy a pond of still water. They may even be dry in some parts of the year. The plants that live in swamps have special adaptions that enable them to tolerate high water levels. Approximately 10% of the land area in Florida is covered by forested wetlands. Their research indicates that the glare thrown up into the sky interferes with chemical reactions. These reactions would normally help clean the air during the night of the fumes emitted by motor cars and factories during the day. The study was presented at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco. All the people going about their business in a city put a complex cocktail of chemicals into the air. From the tailpipes of cars to the chimneys of factories, it makes for a heady mix of molecules that nature then has to try to clean up. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2016GL067745/pdf Nature uses a special form of nitrogen oxide, called the nitrate radical, to break down chemicals that would otherwise go on to form the smog and ozone that can make city air such an irritant on the chest. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2015JD024121/full This cleansing normally occurs in the hours of darkness because the radical is destroyed by sunlight; it only shows up at night.
