At the present there are approximately 400 subtitles of user areas such as fundamental particle physics, nuclear physics, solid state physics, nanotechnology, medicine, chemistry, biology, jeology, material, electronic, energy and defence industry areas of particle accelerators. In these conditions particle accelerators keeps a very significant place among science and technology priorties in the entirely developed and still developing countries. There are nearby 15.000 accelerators. Situation in Turkey In our country there are medical linacs and small-scale cyclotrons using purpose of diagnostic and treatment. However there is not any center to use research and development (R&D). It has planned to transmit first institution purpose of research and development based on accelerator technology besides have been made Turkish Accelerator Center Technical Design associated with Ankara University and SPO Project. Feasibility and Content Design studies had been completed between 1997 and 2005. Third stage of this Project will have been completed by 2011. At these laboratories will be built as experimental stations. To reseach will be possible in material science, biotechnology, nanotechnology, medicine, chemistry, biology, agriculture, communication areas. Also, in project content establishment of Accelerator Technology Institute is planned to reduce insufficency at human force about accelerator technology and its applications. International Collaborations Ankara University which is Coordinator University of Project has signed collaboration agreements with predecors of accelerator technologies of world and Europe about accelerator technologies and applications until last period of 2011 is stated that below in order to collective studies. 1. European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) - www.cern.ch TURKISH ACCELERATOR CENTER (TAC) TECHNICAL DESIGN REPORT AND TEST FACILITY http://thm.ankara.edu.tr TAC IR FEL Project is coordinated by Ankara University and participated with nearby 75 researchers from 10 universities. This project is supported by SPO (State Planning Organization). Prime Ministry State Planning Organization SPO Project Code: DPT2006K-120470 Turkish Accelerator Center (TAC) Project First step was taken as it was presented to SPO purpose of written feasibility in order to Turkish Accelerator Center Project especially necessity of R&D studies with together to bring the accelerator technology to our country. Purpose of the TAC Project is to provide a meeting of our country with accelerator Technologies and so that coordinate R&D activities based on this technology. Especially, investigation to the fundamental particle beams is the unique way to understand micro and nano world directly or indirectly. Turkish Accelerator Center that can be studied fundemental and applied science based on accelerator research will be started in 2012 in Ankara, Turkey and complete of TAC Project will be built in 2020s. First stage was completed with supporting by SPO (DPT-97K-120420) “Particle Accelerators: What should have been in Turkey” known as feasibility of Project in 2000. Second stage which is known content design of Project is completed with two projects one of the these project codes DPT2002K-120250 “General Design of Turkish Accelerator Complex” and other one whose project code is DPT2003K-120190 “General Design for Produce and Use of Synchrotron Radiation and Free Electron Laser”. Approximately 20 researchers were taken place in these two projects from Ankara and Gazi Universities. First establishment will be IR FEL laboratory between 2008-2011. On the other hand technical design workings will be possible to R&D studies on fundamental and applied high energy electron, positron beams and proton at the Turkish Accelerator Center. Particle accelerators (energy of GeV) based on (SR & FEL) radiation sources will be taken place in this. When TAC is completed, it will be a research and application center in the world. Turkish Accelerator Center IR FEL Facility Research Potential Infrared Free Electron Laser (IR FEL) Accelerated electron beam loses a part of its energy as an electromagnetic radiation while it is passing through a sinussel magnetic field called as an undulator in the lineer accelerator. This radiation named as “Free Electron Laser (FEL)”. It is taken out from the hole of one of the mirrors is confined between two mirrors when it reaches certain saturation. Such as a FEL mechanism regarded as “Oscillator mode Free Electron Laser”. This radiation is same-phase, single color and adjustable wavelength form. 8 experimental stations one of these is to use in order to photon diagnostics will be taken part in the TAC IR FEL. These experiment stations will be donated with private spectroscopic and microscopic processes. IR FEL facility as Test Laboratory of Turkish Accelerator Center have an electron beam (10 - 40 MeV energy range), two undulators and two optical mirror systems. It is planned to produce FEL between wavelength range 2-250 micron in the IR FEL laboratory . This range includes NIR, MIR and FIR regions. These experiment stations will be configured to possible studies about research and progress areas at this laboratory are taken account of user potentials in our country and region . TAC IR FEL will be happen first and point of swing for research in our country and region when it is completed.
