Türkçe
Kobe’ye gitmişti.
日本語
Kobe-e ikimashita.(神戸へ行きました。)
English
(Turkish) He or she had gone to Kobe.
(Japanese) I (You, He, She, We, They, etc.) went to Kobe.
NB The two sentences here are “tricky”. Actually Turkish and Japanese don’t carry
exactly the same meaning, because
(1)Japanese verbs don’t conjugate according to person. Moreover, it is quite common for
Japanese to omit the subject. It is the context that determines who or what the subject
is. Thus the subject of the Japanese sentence here is not limited to the third person.
(2) Turkish “-mişti” and Japanese “-mashita” look alike but they are quite different in
function.
The former focuses on the tense (i.e. pluperfect ) while the latter on the
speaker’s attitude towards the listener (i.e. politeness).
“Ikimashita(行きました)”
implies that it is more polite than the corresponding plain form “itta(行った)”.
(3) Japanese doesn’t share the same concept of tense with Turkish or many other
languages. In fact, it is not based on tense but two aspects: perfective and imperfective
aspects.
Here, “ikimashita” implies the action of going was completed or has been
completed. That is, the sentence is expressed in perfective aspect.
Japanese doesn’t distinguish the past tense from the perfect tense, much less the
pluperfect.
