Date of Printing : July 2009 Basım Tarihi : Temmuz 2009 VERIFICATION OF DEIS METHOD AS A TOOL FOR INVESTIGATIONS OF AISI 304 STAINLESS STEEL DISSOLUTION PROCESS IN CONDITIONS OF PROCEEDING INTERGRANULAR CORROSION ABSTRACT Results presented in this paper demonstrate the instantaneous impedance changes versus reactivation potential detected by means of the dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (DEIS) technique for the AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process during intergranular corrosion (IGC) in 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN solution at different pH. Application of the DEIS method made it possible to evaluate dynamic changes of the examined system’s impedance in conditions of IGC. As a result, the controlling stage of the overall rate of AISI 304 SS dissolution could be determined. Moreover, an alternative way of assessment of the AISI 304 SS dissolution rate during intergranular corrosion was proposed based on approximation to theory of iron dissolution in sulfuric acid medium. In addition, it could be shown that the DEIS measurements provide information about the degree of sensitization (DOS) of the examined material. Accordingly, it was concluded that the DEIS technique is more advantageous over the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) tests when investigating intergranular corrosion process. 1. INTRODUCTION Austenitic stainless steels (containing 18% chromium–8% nickel) are widely used engineering materials in many branches of industry due to their good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures. Nevertheless, the precipitation of intermetallic compounds at grain boundaries affects this resistance1. Exposure to a high-temperature range of 500–800°C, during welding or service, leads to precipitation of chromium rich carbides (type Cr23C6) or sigma phase (Fe-CrMo) at grain boundaries and A. ARUTUNOW* K. DAROWICKI formation of chromium depletion regions adjacent to these carbides. Stainless steels with chromium depleted regions at grain boundaries having chromium less than 12–13 wt% are known to have undergone sensitization1-3. Intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels has been explained by the chromium depletion theory4,5. It has been shown that the extent of chromium depleted zones at grain boundaries is a direct indication of the material’s susceptibility to IGC and in the presence of residual stresses and strain to IGSCC as well in the final stage6. According to the ASTM standard, metallographic etching and weight-loss tests are regularly performed to assess degree of sensitization (DOS) of austenitic stainless steels (SS)711 . These evaluation techniques suffer from either a long testing period or requirement of a large amount of etchant. Since anodic dissolution of austenitic SS in an electrolyte is an electrochemical process, electrochemical methods should be able to estimate DOS of austenitic stainless steels. Many electrochemical methods were proposed to determine DOS of stainless steels Corresponding author KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 3 in the literature12,13. Among these methods, anodic polarization tests14 were the most commonly used approaches. Nevertheless, AC impedance for the evaluation of DOS has not been reported yet. A search for a rapid, quantitative and non-destructive test method, lead many researchers to develop double-loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (DL-EPR) tests15-20. The DL-EPR technique has especially found the application for detecting DOS of AISI 304 stainless steels. However, it is worth to emphasize certain disadvantages of this method. Among the most important are high-amplitude perturbation signal, determination of DOS only, and finally lack of information related to the mechanism and rate of IGC. Classical electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) also provides information concerning the IG, but only before and after the corrosion process, when investigated system is in the stable state. Therefore, EIS cannot provide detailed characteristic of proceeding corrosion processes. Such possibility can be achieved by using dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (DEIS) due to its joint time-frequency procedure21-35. DEIS allows the investigation of corrosion process progressing in time what results in determination of very detailed characteristic of the examined system. So far DEIS was successfully applied to examination of pitting corrosion26-28, organic coatings29, passive layer cracking process on austenitic stainless steels and aluminum alloys30-34, and to investigate the mechanism and kinetics of pickling of high-temperature oxidized 304 SS in HF-H2SO435. The aim of this paper is to assess dynamic changes of the impedance of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process in conditions of intergranular corrosion in electrolyte solution of various pH by means of DEIS technique including determination of controlling stage of the overall rate. 2. EXPERIMENTAL Chemical composition of austenitic stainless steel used in the researches is given in Table 1. Examined specimens were prepared according to instructions provided by the ASTM G108-94 standard [36]. Specimens were sensitized at 675°C for 36 hours. Corrosion potential of the sensitized specimens in the examined electrolyte solution was of about ECORR = -0.900 V* independently of pH. Non-sensitized (reference) specimens were also examined in order to make adequate comparison. The corrosion potentials of non-sensitized and sensitized specimens were the same. 30 specimens * All potentials in this article are given vs. mercury / mercury sulphate electrode. 4 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 Table 1. DEIS measurements were performed in a threeelectrode cell, in which mercury/mercury sulphate [Hg, Hg2SO4⏐H2SO4 (0.5 mol/dm3)] electrode was used as a reference electrode and the auxiliary electrode was made of platinum net. The employed reference electrode is not in accordance with the ASTM G 108-94 standard where saturated calomel electrode with controlled leakage rate was recommended. However, to avoid a risk of pitting corrosion due to the presence of chloride ions, which might be transported to the solution from the electrolytic bridge filled with potassium chloride, it was decided to use the reference electrode with electrolitic bridge filled with sulphuric acid of the same concentration as the one used in the investigated electrolyte solution. The experiments were realized in 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN solution of various pH to determine controlling stage of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process proceeding during intergranular corrosion. Composition of the investigated solutions is given in Table 2. The DEIS measurements were carried out “online” while the samples were polarized in agreement with the measurement procedure presented in the ASTM G108-94 standard36 to guarantee conditions equivalent with the DL-EPR tests performed on AISI 304 stainless steel: temperature of electrolyte was of 30°C±1; the polarization was from ECORR=-0.900V to E=-0.200V (maintained for 2 minutes in the passive state) – activation scan; and back to corrosion potential ECORR=-0.900V – reactivation scan*. The measurement set-up consisted of a highfrequency potentiostat; a National Instruments PCI 6120 card generating the perturbation signal, and Table 2. Impedance measurements were executed for the frequency range 20kHz – 7Hz. Averaged number of points per decade in the DEIS measurements was 5. Sampling frequency of 100kHz resulted from the measurement card settings being at our disposal. Proper selection of the sampling frequency in the DEIS measurements enables to reflect the highest measurement frequencies with very good precision. In the investigations the multi-sinusoidal perturbation signal composed of 20 sinusoids was utilized. Diversified amplitudes of the perturbation signal (a set of 20 sinusoids) ranging from 5 mV to 28 mV were applied in order to make it possible measuring of DC current by means of only one resistor with acceptable accuracy both for low and high frequencies. In the case of low frequencies higher amplitudes of the perturbation signal were applied, as opposed to the high frequency range in which lower amplitudes were selected. Backgrounds and more detailed description of the DEIS technique can be found in papers written by Darowicki and co-workers21-25. 3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Dependencies between DC current and potential, both in the activation and reactivation range, were obtained on the basis of proper filtering procedure, which is strictly connected with the DEIS technique21-25. As it is presented in Equation (1) both voltage perturbation and current response signals are composed of a DC term and the other one used for impedance characterization of the examined process. Thus, after the filtering procedure of DC components from the perturbation and response signals one obtains the dependency iDC = f(uDC) equivalent with a classical polarisation curve. n u D C ¦ u i exp> j Z i t <i @ i 1 perturbation signal o n i D C ¦ ii exp> j Z i t <i ) i @ i 1 response signal (1) where: ui and ii are the signal amplitudes for the ith frequency, t is time, Ψi is the phase shift of perturbation/response signal and Φi corresponds to the phase shift due to a character of the investigated process. Accordingly, Figures 1a and 1b depict DC current dependencies versus activation and reactivation potentials recorded for the sensitized and non-sensitized (reference) specimens respectively. Figure 1. DC current changes versus activation and reactivation potential obtained on the basis of a filtering procedure of DC component from the voltage perturbation and current response signals recorded during the DEIS measurements in 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN solution of different pH: (- -) pH=0.2, (-◊-) pH=0.5, (-O-) pH=0.8, (-X-) pH=1.1; a) specimens sensitized for 36 hours in 675OC, b) non-sensitized (reference) specimens. Şekil 1. Significant activation peaks dependent on pH of the electrolyte solution could be observed for all investigated specimens. Dependently on pH, the reactivation peaks were only detected for the sensitized specimens, what is in good agreement with the results that would be recorded by means of the classical DL-EPR technique. Nevertheless, the DLEPR tests allow only obtaining the ratio between maximal values of reactivation and activation current [Imax(reactivation) / Imax(activation)] defined as degree of sensitization (DOS). Adequate results are gathered in Table 3. Hence, on the basis of the DL-EPR measurements it is difficult to determine the mechanism and rate of both AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process and IG in the reactivation potential range. Slight difference in very low values of DOS (all below 0.1) could be observed for the reference specimens, what implies their resistance to IG. On the other hand, all sensitized specimens subjected to experiments demonstrated decrease in DOS with increasing pH and could be recognized as susceptible to IG because of DOS>0.1. Values of degree of sensitization (DOS) obtained on the basis of the DEIS measurements performed in 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN solution of different pH for specimens made of AISI 304 SS non-sensitized (reference) and sensitized for 36h in 675oC Çizelge 3. 675 oC de 36 saat boyunca hassaslaştırılan AISI 304 SS çeliğinin değişik pH değerlerinde 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN ile muamele edilen ve edilmeyen (referans) örneklerinden DEIS ölçüm metodu ile elde edilen duyarlılık (DOS) değerleri. pH Imax(reactivation) / Imax(activation) sensitized (36 h, non-sensitized 0.2 (0.5M H2SO4 + 0.01M KSCN) 0.513 0.008 0.5 (0.4M H2SO4 + 0.1M Na2SO4+ 0.01M 0.493 0.001 0.8 (0.3M H2SO4 + 0.2M Na2SO4+ 0.01M 0.357 0.001 1.1 (0.2M H2SO4 + 0.3M Na2SO4+ 0.01M 0.139 0.001 Application of the DEIS method made it possible to record sets of instantaneous impedance spectra reflecting dynamic changes of the investigated system’s impedance as a function of potential. Figure 1. Potential changes recorded during the pickling in 4M HNO3 (---) and 4M HF (---) Şekil 1. 4M HNO3 (---) and 4M HF (---) içinde dağlama sırasında kaydedilen potansiyel değişimi. Regarding the fact that the difference in dependencies between DC current and potential was only detected in the reactivation scans, Figures 2a-2d present exemplary DEIS spectra recorded for the sensitized specimens versus reactivation potential (i.e. from about –0.550V to about –0.870V). Respectively, similar spectrograms registered for the reference specimens are illustrated in Figures 2a’2d’. Instantaneous impedance changes of the sensitized specimens were recorded as opposed to the reference ones. The non-sensitized specimens exhibited impedance spectra of capacitance character (passive state) indicating that any AISI 304 6 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 stainless steel dissolution process was not detected, while the sensitized ones exhibited significant active-passive transition unequivocally involved with proceeding corrosion process. Unquestionable is the shape of DEIS spectra recorded for the sensitized specimens as well as distribution of the measurement frequencies. Both correspond to the ones obtained for pure iron dissolution in sulphuric acid medium 37-40 and exhibit one inductance loop responsible for an intermediate presence on the surface of examined specimens. Taking into consideration chemical composition of the investigated material and theory presented by Armstrong and Epelboin 39,40 it can be stated that in the case of AISI 304 SS dissolution in conditions of IG the most probable intermediate is (FeOH)ads among other ones, which could be also present. It has been detaily depicted in Figures 3a and 3b, which illustrate 2D impedance spectra extracted from the reactivation potential range (i.e. from E = -0.705 V to E = -0.749 V) of the DEIS spectrogram that was recorded for the sample sensitized for 36 hours and exposed to the solution of pH=0.2 and pH=1.1. Results presented in this form distinctly show activation character of registered impedance spectra and exclude the occurrence of diffusion process. Increase in pH of 0.5M SO42- + 0.01M KSCN solution affects increasing impedance of the examined system due to more significant AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution during IG. The Intergranular corrosion is considered as one of the most difficult to predict corrosion process due to its complicated mechanism. Taking into account the shape of registered DEIS spectra and theory proposed by Armstrong et al. 39 and Epelboin et al. 40, the authors assumed that following reactions (2) and (3) could represent the mechanism of dissolution of AISI 304 stainless steel in conditions of proceeding intergranular corrosion: k2 Fe + OH- (FeOH)ads + e k-2 k3 (FeOH)ads o Fe(OH)+ + e (2) (3) Accordingly, this kind of assumption can provide additional information about general character of IG process. Moreover, rates of particular reactions (2) and (3) could be represented by equations (4), (5) and (6) respectively 39,40: Figure 2. Exemplary DEIS impedance spectra as a function of reactivation potential registered for the specimens sensitized for 36 hours in 675°C (a, b, c, d) and non-sensitized (reference) samples (a’, b’, c’, d’) exposed to SO42- + 0.01M KSCN solution of different pH: a) pH=0.2,b) pH=0.5, c) pH=0.8, d) pH=1.1. Şekil 3. 36 saat süreyle 675 °C de hassaslaştırılmış örneğin 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN çözeltisi ile muamele edildikten sonra DEIS spektralarından elde edilen 2D empedans spektrumları a) pH=0,2, b) pH=1.1 V2 = (1-Θ) ⋅ COH- ⋅ k20 ⋅ exp(b2E) (4) V-2 = Θ ⋅ k -20 ⋅ exp(-b-2E) (5) V3 = Θ ⋅ k30 ⋅ exp(b3E) (6) where: Θ - the surface coverage coefficient of the intermediate (FeOH)ads on the electrode’s surface, COH- - the concentration of hydroxyl ions, k20, k -20, k30 – the reaction (2), (-2), (3) rate constants respectively. On such basis, it can be stated that only reaction (2) depends on pH of the investigated solution. Therefore, to obtain the information concerning the controlling stage of overall reaction it is necessary to determine Rct=f(pH) and Rads=f(pH) dependencies. Adequate results will be presented later in the paper. Analysis of recorded DEIS impedance spectra had to be performed to give detailed impedance characterization of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process in conditions of intergranular corrosion. The results obtained were analysed by using equivalent circuit presented in Figure 4. This equivalent circuit was successfully employed by Epelboin et al. 38 during studies over the a.c. impedance of iron dissolution in sulphuric acid medium. Fitting of the 8 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 proper equivalent circuit was performed by means of professional ZSimpWin software. At this point it should be emphasised that intergranular corrosion process occurs as a result of active-passive cell operation. Accordingly, R(QR) part of the circuit describes the passive state (chromium enriched) and was used to analyze impedance of the reference samples in reactivation range, while R(C(RL) R) relates to the active state and determines grain boundaries impedance (chromium depletion zones directly connected with IG process) that was analyzed for the sensitized specimens. During the IG process the surface of steel was not in the passive state, thus impedance of the upper branch was very high and impedance of the lower one very low (current flows along the path of the lowest resistance). The two branches of the equivalent circuit are connected in parallel. Accordingly, a reciprocal of the upper branch impedance is very low, so it can be omitted. That is why the parameters of the upper branch (Qp and Rp) were neglected in analysis of the sensitized specimens. Particular elements of equivalent circuit employed to the analysis of grain boundaries impedance in the reactivation range have been described to determine controlling stage of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process and can be found in Figures 5–8 respectively. In general, dependencies of equivalent circuit parameters presented for the nonsensitized specimens as a function of reactivation potential describe surface state of the examined stainless steel. The dependencies for the sensitized specimens refer to the grain/grain boundary interface. Moreover, each diagram contains dependencies extrapolated to the corrosion potential (dashed Figure 5. Dynamic changes of the electrical double layer capacitance versus reactivation potential received for different pH values of the examined solution are depicted in Figure 5. The sensitized specimens revealed linear increase in the electrical double layer capacitance with reactivation potential, what can be explained by a decay of passivity at grain boundaries due to both formation of chromium depletion zones and proceeding AISI 304 SS dissolution process. Insignificant changes of the electrical double layer capacitance with reactivation potential could be only observed in the case of the highest Figure 6. Extrapolation of the obtained dependencies made it possible to determine values of Cdl at open circuit potential ECORR = -0.900 VHg,Hg2SO4⏐H2SO4 corresponding to the process of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution at open circuit conditions. Accordingly, Table 5 gathers these values indicating negative effect of the applied cathodic polarization on the investigated process. Additionally, with increasing pH the sensitized specimens were covered by a thicker passive film and therefore were more resistant to dissolution process. Changes of the charge transfer resistance with reactivation potential are presented in Figure 6. In the reactivation potential range the charge transfer resistance increases of one order of magnitude with pH increasing to 1.1, that is from log Rct = 0.6 Ω to about log Rct = 1.5-2.0 Ω in the case of pH=0.2 and pH=0.5; and from about log Rct = 1.5 Ω to about log Rct = 2.5Ω in the case of pH= 0.8 and pH=1.1. Increase in the charge transfer resistance detected with increasing cathodic polarization results from the intermediate adsorption on the electrode’s surface due to proceeding dissolution process. Similar tendency could be also observed at the open circuit conditions after performed extrapolation procedure. Nevertheless, extrapolated Rct values are of about two orders of magnitude higher (log Rct ≈ 2.5 ÷ 3.9 Ω) than the ones obtained for the polarized system. Proper results are enclosed in Table 4. Table 4. Both described above parameters, that is Cdl and Rct depend on the parameter of attacked grain boundaries area and cannot be directly used to evaluate rate of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process. However to eliminate this problem, values of these parameters had been multiplied, thus, obtaining the product Rct⋅Cdl equivalent with the time-constant of the charge transfer reac- KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 9 tion. Furthermore, when one takes a reciprocal of obtained product values, one will receive a rate of charge transfer reaction equivalent with the rate of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process. Figure 7. Changes of the rate of charge transfer reaction as a function of reactivation potential obtained for the specimens made of AISI 304 stainless steel sensitized for 36 hours in 675°C on the basis of the DEIS measurements in 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN solution of different pH: (- -) pH=0.2, (-◊-) pH=0.5, (-O-) pH=0.8, (-X-) pH=1.1 Şekil 7. Accordingly, Figure 7 presents changes of the reciprocal of Rct⋅Cdl product versus reactivation potential determined on the basis of DEIS measurements in electrolyte solution of different pH. Decrease in the rate of charge transfer reaction with reactivation potential can be observed independently of pH. Nevertheless, the rate of charge transfer process is very high (log 1/τct ≥ 102 s-1) what indicates significant AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process in the reactivation region. Furthermore, extrapolation procedure to the corrosion potential (Table 4) points out slower charge transfer process at open circuit conditions Figure 8. Changes of the rate of intermediate adsorption process versus reactivation potential obtained for the specimens made of AISI 304 stainless steel sensitized for 36 hours in 675°C on the basis of the DEIS measurements in 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN solution of different pH: (- -) pH=0.2, (-◊-) pH=0.5, (-O-) pH=0.8, (-X-) pH=1.1. The same calculation procedure was employed in the case of other electrical parameters describing process of the intermediate adsorption, which are L and Rads. Obtained values of Rads⋅ L product represent time-constant of the intermediate adsorption process, so a reciprocal of these values is directly related to the rate of intermediate adsorption process. Hence, Figure 8 represents changes of the rate of intermediate adsorption process as a function of the reactivation potential for the sensitized specimens. However, the reactivation scan is shorter than in the case of charge transfer reaction due to limited range of applied low frequencies. Independently of pH the rate of intermediate (FeOH)ads adsorption process decreases with pH. Nevertheless, the overall rate of intermediate adsorption process is of about two orders of magnitude lower than the one evaluated for the charge transfer process. As a result it can be stated that the intermediate adsorption process controls overall rate of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution. The same conclusion can be drawn when considering the behavior of examined material at open circuit potential (Table 4). However, the values obtained are of about two orders of magnitude lower (log 1/τads ≈ -1.3 ÷ -3.0 s-1) than the ones recorded in conditions of proceeding polarization. As a result it can be stated that cathodic polarization enhances AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution in conditions of IGC. Finally, dependencies of Rct and Rads as a function of pH have been depicted in Figures 9 and 10 respectively to determine which reaction controls overall rate of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process in the solution of pH<4. It is clearly visible that both parameters depend on pH, although, the dependency of adsorption resistance versus pH is Figure 9. Changes of the charge transfer resistance versus pH obtained for the potential values that were selected from the reactivation range: (-◊-) E = -0.65V, (- -) E = -0.7V, (-∆-) E = -0.75V, (-X-) E = -0.8V. Simultaneously, on the basis of the DEIS measurements it was possible to obtain information about the degree of sensitization of the examined material. Accordingly, performed researches revealed the advantage of the DEIS technique over the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation tests when investigating intergranular corrosion process. Figure 10. Changes of the adsorption resistance as a function of pH obtained for the potential values that were selected from the reactivation range: (-◊-) E = -0.65V, (- -) E = -0.7V, (-∆-) E = -0.75V, (-X-) E = -0.8V. Considering equations (4) – (6) and the fact that only reaction (2) depends on pH of the solution it could be determined that overall rate of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process is controlled by reaction (2) and the adsorption process. 4. CONCLUSIONS From the results of this research the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Application of DEIS technique allows tracing dynamic changes of impedance during AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process, which occurs in conditions of intergranular corrosion. Results presented in this paper are first which demonstrate instantaneous impedance changes versus reactivation potential of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process proceeding during intergranular corrosion in 0.5M SO4-2 + 0.01M KSCN solution of different pH. 2. Based on the analysis of the charge transfer resistance and the adsorption resistance as a function of pH of the investigated solution, it was possible to evaluate that the intermediate adsorption process controls overall rate of AISI 304 stainless steel dissolution process. Moreover, the procedure proposed in this paper can be approximated to assess the rate of intergranular corrosion of AISI 304 stainless steel independently of the parameter of attacked grain boundaries area. Furthermore, the results obtained on the basis of extrapolation procedure to the corrosion potential allow concluding about the negative influence of the applied cathodic polarization (reactivation scan) on AISI 304 SS dissolution process in conditions of intergranular corrosion. It is now clear that the technique provides a method, the determination of electrochemical noise resistance (Rn) that provides a reasonable estimate of the corrosion rate. It also seems probable that it is able to provide information about the type of corrosion occurring, although the optimal technique for doing this is not yet established. Furthermore, there are indications that although the estimate of corrosion rate is relatively robust, indicators of corrosion type are very susceptible to extraneous influences. However, as an estimator of corrosion rate, electrochemical noise measurement is relatively poor compared to conventional techniques, but its potential ability to identify the type of corrosion occurring remains its major advantage. 1. INTRODUCTION The measurement of electrochemical noise, EN, for the study of corrosion processes is now relatively well-established. In this paper the properties of the technique and the methods of analysis will be reviewed, and its capabilities compared with those of other electrochemical methods. Measurement of EN: Initial measurements of EN recorded the fluctuation in potential, usually measured relative to a conventional reference electrode. This is known as the electrochemical potential noise, EPN. Subsequently it was appreciated that it was also possible to measure the fluctuation in current or electrochemical current noise, ECN. This can either be done by maintaining a constant potential with a potentiostat, R.A. COTTIS or by coupling two electrodes through a zero resistance ammeter (also know as a current amplifier). This then led to the now conventional “three-electrode” method wherein the ECN is measured between two nominally identical1 working electrodes, while the EPN is measured with a third electrode, which may either be a reference electrode or a third electrode that is nominally identical to the two working electrodes. It is important to appreciate that there are a number of artefacts that can be introduced during the measurement process, including instrument noise, aliasing and quantization noise. These are detailed in reference numbered 1. An important characteristic of the measurement process is the sampling rate of the measurement. This is frequently of the order of 1 sample per second, as is it often found that the power present in the EN signal is very small at higher frequencies. It is also much simpler to obtain reliable measurements when the sampling frequency is well below the power line frequency, since this presents a major noise source at higher frequencies. In addition, the only well-established theoretical analysis depends on Presented at the XI. International Corrosion Symposium held on 22-25 October 2008 in Izmir/Turkey. KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 13 14 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 -0.378 8E-07 -0.38 7E-07 6E-07 -0.382 5E-07 -0.384 4E-07 -0.386 Current (A) ideal anti-aliasing filter is applied, b will be 1/2∆t). In practice the noise produced by the elementary charge transfer process is liable to be very small, especially if a low measurement bandwidth is used, and hence it will be very difficult to measure. Taking, for example, the reduction of oxygen, with q=4e, where e is the charge on the electron (= 1.6 × 10-19 C), then for a sampling frequency of 1 Hz and a current of 10 mA, the variance will be 1.6 × 10-21 A2 (so the standard deviation will be 4 × 10-11 A). This will be very difficult to measure, especially as the relatively high current implies a low source impedance. Correlated Charge Transfer Processes: One way in which the shot noise associated with the elementary charge transfer processes may be increased is if there is a strong correlation between the charge transfer events1. As an example, there is a strong argument that the metal dissolution reaction will occur in bursts. The difficult step in the dissolution of atoms from a metal surface is the removal of the first atom from a ledge site. Once this has been achieved it is much easier for the remaining atoms in the ledge to dissolve, and this can therefore be expected to result in a burst of charge corresponding to the number of atoms in the ledge. This will depend on the dislocation structure of the metal, but will typically be between 50 and 150,000 atoms. Metastable Pitting: The process of metastable pit nucleation, growth and death is another way in which a large correlated charge transfer process may occur. In this case the amount of charge involved is large, typically of the order of 10-9 to 10-7 C (corresponding to 6 × 109 to 6 × 1011 electrons). Potential (V/SCE) the properties at very low frequencies. Despite this, it may be useful to make measurements at higher frequencies in some situations, and this probably merits more careful examination. Specimen area has a somewhat counter-intuitive effect on measured EN. Workers who are used to normal measurements of electrochemical potential and current tend to assume that electrochemical noise can be treated in the same way, so that the potential noise, measured as the standard deviation of potential, σE, so that it has units of volts, is independent or area, while the standard deviation of current, σI, is proportional to the specimen area, A. However, this is not what is expected for ‘normal’ noise behaviour; instead σE is expected to be proportional to A-1/2, while σI is expected to be proportional to A1/2. Note that there are some situations, notably where the noise process changes as a result of changes in specimen area, where the expected relationships will not be observed (pitting corrosion is probably an example of such as case, since large specimens may give stable pitting, whereas smaller specimens will not have sufficient cathodic current capability to support stable pitting). As a consequence of these factors, current noise results should not be expressed as a current density (i.e. σI/A), but instead the measured current noise should be reported together with the specimen area. Theory of EN: The first step in developing a theoretical description of EN is to define the characteristic form of typical EN signals. This is difficult in the general case, but there are several sources of EN that are reasonably well-defined. The Elementary Charge Transfer Process: At the very lowest level the charge transfer process will involve the transfer of a quantity of electrons (e.g. 2 for the oxidation of iron to ferrous ions or 4 for the reduction of a molecule of oxygen). This will result in the transfer of a pulse of charge and, assuming that the individual reactions are uncorrelated, the number of pulses within a given time (such as the sample interval) will be a random variable with a binomial distribution. Noise with this character is known as shot noise, and the analysis was derived by Shottky2. Providing the average number of pulses of charge q within the sample interval, ∆t, is large, this will tend to a normal distribution, with the mean number of events given by ∆tI/q, where I is the mean current. The variance of the noise will be 2qIb, where b is the bandwidth of the measurement (this will depend on the sampling frequency and the characteristics of the anti-aliasing filter – if an 3E-07 -0.388 0 200 400 600 800 Time (secs) 1000 2E-07 1200 Figure 1. Example of metastable pitting transients for carbon steel in Ca(OH)2 + NaCl solution (after Bagley4). This leads to electrochemical current noise that is readily measurable. Metastable pits have a relatively long life (of the order of seconds), and are relatively infrequent, so the statistical properties will only have a valid character of shot noise at very low measurement frequencies (usually of the order of mHz). This is usually measured most effectively by using the power spectral density (PSD) version of the analysis (see reference Hata! Yer işareti tanımlanmamış. for details), although in principle the same effect can be achieved by sampling at a very low frequency (with valid anti-aliasing filtering – it is because such filtering is very difficult in practice that the PSD approach is usually simpler). Stable Pitting Corrosion: Stable pitting corrosion consists of the stable growth of a pit, usually under diffusion or resistance control. There has been little work on the EN associated with stable pitting corrosion, possibly because laboratory experiments in free corrosion are rarely performed in conditions that favour stable pit growth (thanks to the short duration of experiments and the relatively small size of specimens, and hence limited current available from the cathodic reaction). However, we have a relatively good understanding of the processes of stable pit growth. Within the pit the charge transfer process is ‘normal’ active dissolution, and it might therefore be expected to have a low noise that is characteristic of this process. On the other hand there may be fluctuations in the geometry of the pit due to the dissolution of a metallic cover1, and these will give an enhanced level of ECN. Outside the pit the cathodic reaction will normally be oxygen reduction, which will be under activation control, possibly with an element of mass transport control. This is expected to have the low value of ECN associated with the elementary charge transfer process. Note, however, that probably the most characteristic feature of stable pitting corrosion is expected to be a permanent drop in the free corrosion potential, as the current from the pit polarises the external cathode. Crevice Corrosion: Crevice corrosion is similar in many ways to pitting corrosion, and the initiation stage is similar to metastable pitting, and may produce noise of a similar character. As with stable pitting corrosion the dominant characteristic of stable crevice corrosion is a drop in potential, due to the increased anodic current produced in the corroding crevice. Erosion Corrosion: The term erosion corrosion may be used to imply enhanced corrosion associated with the impact of solid particles, or that in- Figure 2. Taking the former definition, it is clear that the impact of particles will give a transient increase in the rate of the anodic reaction, thanks to the thinning or removal of any passive film. It may also modify the rate of the cathodic reaction by removing the stagnant boundary layer, although this is probably less significant that the effect on the anodic reaction. The transient pulse of charge associated with the particle impact may be analysed in a similar way to metastable pitting corrosion, although any increase in the cathodic reaction will be correlated with the anodic transient, and so will reduce the apparent amplitude of the anodic transient. Stress Corrosion Cracking: Stress corrosion crack growth can be expected to produce EN associated with the crack advance event, and in this context an important question is whether or not the cracking process is continuous or discontinuous. In active path dissolution processes it is plausible that the crack propagates by continuous active dissolution at the crack tip, and in this case the current noise generated will be low. Furthermore, as the crack grows longer, most of the current generated at the crack tip will be contained within the crack, and very little will ‘escape’ to be measured by the conventional current measurement or by measurement of potential noise. Other cracking processes, such as hydrogen embrittlement or film-induced cleavage, necessarily result in discontinuous crack growth. This will lead to EN as the freshly-exposed crack surface interacts with the solution, although the shielding effect of the crack walls may again be significant. In this case the EN will again display a pattern of transient events as the crack tip interacts with the solution, although the shielding effect of the crack walls makes analysis difficult. Corrosion Fatigue: Corrosion fatigue is a somewhat similar process to SCC, except that the imposed mechanical load cycle can be expected to influence the timing of crack advance processes, Thus the EN produced during corrosion fatigue cane be expected to have a strong cyclic component at the load cycle frequency. Unfortunately there is some evidence that other processes, such as solution flow over the surface of the straining component and in and out of cracks, will also produce cyclic EN that has no relation to the crack growth process, so that EN monitoring for corro1 0.1 2 Log PSD (V /Hz) 0.01 0.001 0RPM 10RPM 0.0001 20RPM 50RPM 0.00001 100RPM 0.000001 1000RPM 0.0000001 0.00000001 0.000000001 0.0001 0.001 0.01 0.1 1 Log f (Hz) Figure 4. Flow: Corrosion is not the only source of electrochemical noise; fluctuations in mass transport due to turbulent flow can also produce noise, as shown in Figure 4. Note that in this experiment the laminar to turbulent transition occurs at a rotation speed of approximately 25 rpm. Note also that the additional noise due to flow fluctuations occurs at relatively high frequencies, with the upper frequency increasing as the rotation speed increases. 2. ANALYSIS OF EN DATA The Electrochemical Noise Resistance, Rn The above discussion of the sources of EN data has given some clues about analysis methods that can be used, but we shall first look at one of the most common methods of analysis, the determination of the electrochemical noise resistance, Rn. This is generally defined as the standard deviation of the potential noise, σE, divided by the standard deviation of the current noise, σI. Assuming that σE and σI are based on the measured potential (i.e. σI has not been divided by the specimen area) Rn should be normalized by multiplying by the specimen area, A, to give the normal polarization resistance units of Ohm m2. Many workers have then assumed, or attempted to prove, that Rn is equivalent to the linear polarization resistance, Rp. It is questionable whether any of the so-called proofs really achieve their objective, except in so far as they demonstrate that, if the response of the metal-solution interface is assumed to be described by Rp, then the con- ventional EN measurement should produce Rn = Rp with no scaling factors required (providing a quiet reference electrode is used – Bertocci et al.1 have shown that a correction factor of √3 is required if the reference electrode is identical to the two working electrodes). However, practical results also tend to confirm that there is a strong correlation between Rn and Rp, and this relationship is generally accepted. However, several questions need to be asked about the use of this method for the estimation of corrosion rate (by the use of the Stern-Geary relationship2: • A common definition of Rp is that it is the low frequency limit of the electrochemical impedance, i.e. Rp is implicitly measured at a low frequency. In practice the frequency is typically of the order of 0.01 Hz, although this is only well-defined if a sinewave measurement of Rp is employed. Rn is typically measured using EN that has been sampled at approximately 1 Hz, which implies that a range of frequencies up to 0.5 Hz have been used to determine Rn (assuming that ideal antialiasing filters have been used). The actual distribution of frequencies used is determined by the system being measured, and consequently the measurement is rather poorly defined, but in general it probably makes the measurement at too high a frequency. This question has been considered from a theoretical perspective by Bertocci et al.3,4, who also made a few measurements, but the question has not been subjected to systematic practical study. A simple solution to the problem of the frequency range of the measurement is to define this by determining the power spectral density of potential (ΨE) and current (ΨI) and using the this to determine the amplitude of the impedance (=(ΨE/ΨE)1/2), at a specified frequency (see reference for further information). • Rn tends to be very noisy compared to Rp, so it is relatively poor for the measurement of rapid changes in behaviour. • Rn has been found to be very insensitive to the source of noise, but the measured currents and potential must relate to the response of the electrochemical cell, rather than resulting from instrument noise or interference acquired elsewhere5. While it is relatively easy to ensure that this requirement is met in the laboratory, it is much more difficult to be sure that it is valid in the field. As Karel Hladky, one of the early workers on EN for corrosion studies, said, “the problem with noise is that it looks pretty much like noise”, in other words it is difficult, if not impossible, to separate real EN from other sources of noise once a measurement has been made. Identification of Corrosion Type While Rn is reasonably well-established for the estimation of corrosion rate, the more interesting prospect for EN measurement is the derivation of information about the type of corrosion, since there is limited scope for alternative electrochemical methods of doing this. It has been claimed that changes in the impedance spectrum are indicative of localised corrosion in certain systems, but this has not, as far as we are aware, been developed into a reliable general analysis. The existence of some forms of corrosion may be relatively easy to detect, especially if the metal-environment system is welldefined. Thus the commencement of stable crevice corrosion can readily be identified by the drop in the corrosion potential (at least in the laboratory), and stable pitting corrosion can be expected to be similar. However, a change in the ‘dc’ level such as this can be difficult to detect in real systems, where there may be other causes for changes in the corrosion potential. A second feature that may be readily detected in EN data when viewed in the time domain (i.e. a conventional plot of potential and/or current versus time), is individual transient events, such as are produced during metastable pitting and some other processes. An example of these is shown in Figure 1. Where such features are so clearly apparent, then study of the time record is probably the best method of interpretation, although it may not be feasible for a large-scale corrosion monitoring activity. It also becomes more difficult as more transient events occur, and the time records become less clear. For this reason there is a need to develop simple analysis methods that can extract information relating to the type of corrosion from the original unprocessed EN data. This may also be necessary in order to provide an element of data reduction for corrosion monitoring systems. This may be less of a problem with the rapidly developing capacity of hard disks and data transmission systems, but there is still no point is storing vast quantities of data that are never going to be analysed. Several approaches have been proposed for obtaining summary information from EN time records to indicate the type of corrosion. Many of these are heuristic (i.e. the method seems to work but does not have a theoretical basis). The various methods have been discussed in detail elsewhere1, KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 17 but some of the more significant will be briefly discussed here. Most of the simpler parameters intended to indicate the type of corrosion are based on the general premise that a more localized process will nose with a higher amplitude, as the local attack typically corresponds to larger amplitude ‘events’. This is probably not always valid – for example galvanic corrosion is often going to be occurring under activation control, and it might be expected to exhibit the low noise that is characteristic of that process (although we are not aware of any direct evidence of this). On the other hand it clearly is a valid assumption for metastable pitting and similar processes. defined as σI divided by the corrosion current, Icorr, measured by another method (harmonic analysis in the method originally proposed3. As Icorr is necessarily positive, and does represent the underlying value that σI corresponds to, this is a reasonable parameter. However, it does suffer from one undesirable feature, namely the fact that it is expected to depend on the specimen area, √A, because it is expected that Icorr is proportional to A, while σI is proportional to √A. For its normal application to corrosion monitoring this is not too serious, as the probe area is generally constant, but it should be appreciated when comparing data from different systems (and the pitting factor should have appropriate units specified, such as cm). Coefficient of Variation and Localization Index Shot Noise Parameters The shot noise analysis assumes that the EN has been produced exclusively as a series of rapid anodic transient events with each event producing a constant charge, q. These are balanced by a lownoise cathodic process. In order to find both the amount of charge in each event and the frequency of events, fn, it is necessary to assume that the current, Icorr, can be calculated from Rn by means of the Stern-Geary equation. Then, assuming that σE and σI are determined at a low frequency (such that a reasonably large number of events are included in each sample period, and the sample period is long compared to the duration of each event), then q, fn and Icorr can be determined: The coefficient of variation, CoV, is a standard statistical parameter, defined as the standard deviation divided by the mean. A larger CoV indicates a more variable process, and might therefore be expected to indicate a more localized process. However, the CoV is only valid in respect of a one-sided distribution, i.e. a distribution in which values are constrained to be either all positive or all negative (thus the distribution of heights of school children would have a valid coefficient of variation). When the electrochemical current noise is measured in the conventional way (i.e. as the nett current between two nominally identical electrodes), then the distribution is definitely not one-sided, and the CoV is not a valid parameter. This is apparent when it is considered that the expected value of the mean current measured between two nominally identical electrodes is zero, which implies an infinite CoV. As a means of circumventing the inconvenience of a possible division by zero, the Localization Index, LI, was defined as the standard deviation of current divided by the rms (root mean square) current. In effect this is the same as the CoV, but with an imposed upper bound of 1, so although it behaves in a slightly more reasonable way, it is still not a valid parameter. For well-behaved noise distributions it can be shown that the expected value of the CoV and LI are a function only of the number of samples in each time record3; consequently these parameters are not recommended. The Pitting Factor In response to the practical and theoretical problems with the CoV and LI, the Pitting Factor, PF, was 18 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 Other Electrochemical Methods While a wide variety of electrochemical techniques have been devised, only a relatively limited number have found widespread use in corrosion research and corrosion monitoring. With one exception, these techniques are aimed at determining the response of the metal-solution interface under conditions of small perturbations (usually 10-50 mV in amplitude). Polarization Curve The determination of the polarization curve is the one method that uses a large amplitude perturbation, and as such it is a destructive method, in that it will usually cause a permanent change in the specimen being tested (e.g. by initiating pitting corrosion). Because of the significant effect on the specimen, the determination of polarization curves is useful for the study of the nature of metal-solution interactions, but it is not appropriate for corrosion monitoring (although some workers have used Tafel extrapolation to estimate icorr using polarization curves determined over a relatively range). Polarization curves may be used to determine the Tafel slopes (and hence the Stern-Geary coefficient, B), although some of the other methods that are now available are arguably more appropriate for this. Linear Polarization Resistance The Linear Polarization Resistance Method (LPRM) determines the effective resistance of the metal-solution interface at a relatively low frequency, such that the double layer capacitance (or other processes with a capacitive character) does not contribute significantly to the measured current. In practice a variety of methods are used to make the LPRM measurement: • Current step method – this method is the simplest to implement; a current step is applied across the metal-solution interface and the potential response is measured. The current can be controlled reasonably accurately by using a 9 or 12V battery and a resistor, with the potential response being measured with a digital multimeter. The current must be controlled to give an appropriate change in potential (of the order of 10 mV), and the method is most suitable as a very low cost manual method. • Potential step method – this method uses a potential step of the order of 10 mV either side of the free corrosion potential, with the resultant current being measured. • Potential sweep method – this method sweeps the potential over a range of typically -10 to +10 mV, and determines dE/dI in order to estimate Rp. • AC method – this method effectively makes an ac impedance measurement at a single frequency. This leads to a better-defined frequency of measurement, and it is therefore probably the best method. It does require more complex instrumentation, but this need not be particularly expensive with the low cost and high performance of modern electronics. Whatever method is used to measure LPRM, the measuring configuration can either use two or three electrodes. For a two-electrode measurement the two electrodes are of the material being studied, and the twice the value of Rp for a single electrode (plus the resistance of the solution between the electrodes) is measured. The three electrode method uses a conventional potentiostatic configuration, with a single working electrode, a counter electrode to apply current to the working electrode and a separate reference electrode to monitor the potential. For corrosion monitoring the three electrodes are normally identical, and this does have the advantage for the potential-controlled methods that the free corrosion potential should correspond to 0 V, so the potential waveform does not need to take account of the corrosion potential. The threeelectrode method is somewhat less sensitive to the solution resistance, and is therefore more appropriate in high resistance environments. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is essentially the same as LPRM, except that the measurement is necessarily made use sinewave energisation (or possibly multiple simultaneous sinewaves), and a wide range of frequencies are used (normally applied sequentially). The additional information that is provided by the measurements at many frequencies allows a more complete determination of the properties of the interface. The technique has been used for many years, but recently significant advances have been achieved in respect of the speed of measurement and the management of errors3,4. Harmonic Analysis As its name implies, the LPRM technique assumes that the response of the electrochemical system under investigation is linear (in essence this means that the amplitude of the response is directly proportional to the amplitude of the perturbation). This is, of course, rarely true for electrochemical systems. The basis of the Harmonic Analysis, HA, method is an extension of the Stern-Geary analysis that allows for the non-linearity, and takes advantage of it to estimate the anodic and cathodic Tafel coefficients, thereby obtaining a direct indication of the Stern-Geary coefficient from the measured data, rather than relying on a pre-determined value. The system is perturbed with a sinewave, and the non-linearity leads to a distortion of the sinewave that gives rise to additional sinewave components that are harmonics of the original (i.e. they have frequencies that are an integral multiple of that of the original sinewave). An analysis by Meszaros3 demonstrated that is was possible to determine the Tafel slopes of the anodic and cathodic reactions by analysis of the first two harmonics, and this method has been used in corrosion monitoring15. KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 19 Electrochemical Frequency Modulation Electrochemical Frequency Modulation (EFM), is an extension of the HA method, which uses a pair of frequencies, and monitors the harmonics and the intermodulation distortion3. The latter arises because the non-linearity of the electrochemical interface causes the two sinewaves to interact with each other and create additional components with frequencies that are the sum and difference of the frequencies of the two input sinewaves. This methods has similar capabilities to HA, but with the advantage that there should be fixed relationships between the various intermodulation components, and these provide a check on the validity of the data. Comparison of EN with Other Methods As has been indicated above, EN does appear to be able to estimate corrosion rate by the determination of Rn. However, all of the alternative electrochemical techniques are able to do this, and the question must be asked as to whether EN offers any significant advantages (while it is rather clever to determine the corrosion rate without any external perturbation, that doesn’t make it a good way of doing it). In the past two justifications for the use of Rn have been presented: 1. The measurement does not involve external perturbation of the system under investigation. 2. The measurement uses low cost instrumentation compared to alternative techniques. The second of these points is arguably correct, although the fundamental costs of the relevant electronics is very small compared to other costs, and this does not seem a valid reason to choose EN in preference to other techniques. The first argument is, at first sight, self-evident, but it should be appreciated that there are two ways of viewing the EN measurement system, and, in particular, the working electrode pair used to measure the current noise: 1. As a single electrode that happens to have been cut in half and reconnected through a zero resistance ammeter. 2. As two electrodes that are connected together, such that the potential fluctuations on each electrode polarise the other electrode. From the second perspective, there is no difference between an EN measurement and a perturbed measurement where the perturbation happens to be the same as that generated by the other working electrode. A perturbed measurement can therefore be regarded as comparable to an EN 20 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 measurement providing the amplitude of the perturbation is comparable to the amplitude of the EN. The perturbation is most clearly acceptable when a current source is used to perturb a working electrode that is otherwise freely corroding, rather than using a controlled potential that will fix the specimen in an unnatural way (although it is reasonable to vary the potential between two otherwise freely corroding working electrodes, as in two electrode methods). It is not trivial to determine whether a perturbing signal will have a greater or a lesser effect than the self-generated noise between two identical electrodes, since the EN will be broadband, with power at all frequencies, whereas the deliberate perturbation will normally by at only one or a few frequencies. However, providing the response to the deliberate perturbation is averaged over a reasonable number of cycles, it can be shown that it is possible to obtain a reasonably accurate measure of the electrode impedance without an excessive increase in the peak-to-peak current or potential. The first priority in the selection of corrosion monitoring methods should be the reliability and consistency of the measured data. On this basis it is hard to recommend the measurement of Rn for the estimation of corrosion, as it is generally found to produce significantly more noisy results than a conventional LPRM measurement. Where EN does have an advantage is in the provision of an indication of the nature of the corrosion process. In this context, the best methods of analysis remain somewhat uncertain, although two approaches appear promising: 1. The identification of specific patterns, such as metastable pitting transients, in the potential- or current-time records. Currently the only established method of doing this is ‘manual’ examination, but it is to be expected that automated methods will be developed, at least as a preliminary sorting method. 2. Analysis based on shot-noise theory. This has been shown to achieve good discrimination of the type of corrosion in a number of cases. However, the measured data are inherently noisy, and statistical analysis over a reasonable period is necessary for good discrimination. 3. CONCLUSIONS • EN Measurement is generally able to estimate the corrosion rate using Rn. However, the resulting measurement is inherently noisy, and more conventional methods (LPRM, EIS), and some newer alternatives (HA, EFM) will usually give better results. • EN measurements can provide an indication of the type of corrosion. However, the method is susceptible to interference from other sources of noise, which may present problems for the application of the method in plant corrosion monitoring. • Manual interpretations of time records or shot noise analysis currently appear the most reliable methods for the identification of the type of corrosion. HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF STEELS USED IN PETROLEUM REFINERY HEATERS The oxidation behaviours of three different steels used in the construction of petroleum refinery heaters were investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique. C-5, P-11, and P-22 steel samples were tested in two different oxidizing environments: air and CO2+2H2O+7.52N2, a gas composition which simulates the combustion products of natural gas, at 450oC and 500oC. P-22 steel had the best oxidation resistance among the three steels at two tem* 22 peratures in air. In CO2+2H2O+7.52N2 environment, C-5 exhibited better oxidation resistance than P-22 and P-11. Analyses of oxidation products by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out to correlate TGA results to oxide composition and morphology. The lower oxidation rate of P-22 in air was explained with reference to the formation of Cr-O phase. Analytical rate equations showed that all of the steels obeyed parabolic rate equation during oxidation and no transition was observed. 1. Table 1. Chemical compositions of steels. X-ray diffraction result of P-22 steel oxidized in air at 500°C. Figure 5. 2. Oksijen kısmi basıncı havada daha yüksek olmasına rağmen, CO2+2H2O+7.52N2 atmosferinde oksitlenme daha hızlı olmaktadır. Bunun nedeni, metal-oksit arayüzünde oluşan gedikler ve oksit tabakasında oluşup, oksitleyici gazların tabaka içerisine daha kolay nüfuz etmesine neden olan kanallardır. 3. CO2+2H2O+7.52N2 ortamında, C-5, P-22 ve P-11’den daha iyi bir oksitlenme direnci göstermiştir. P-22’nin bu ortamdaki daha yüksek oksitKOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 27 lenme hızı, su buharının yardımıyla oksit tabakasından CrO2(OH)2 şeklinde buharlaşan Cr’den kaynaklı Cr-O fazının olmayışına bağlanmıştır. The multidisciplinary aspect of corrosion problems combined with the distributed responsibilities associated with such problems only increase the complexity of the subject. Corrosion control is achieved by recognizing and understanding corrosion mechanisms, by using corrosion-resistant materials and designs, and by using protective systems, devices, and treatments. We know that corrosion is a natural process and also an electrochemical process so electrochemical techniques and electrochemical instrumentation can be used to study the corrosion process. A number of electrochemical techniques have been developed specifically for corrosion measurement. Harmonic analysis is the one of those techniques. We can obtain all kinetic parameters in a short time from results of this method. No other technique offers this facility. The aim of this work is to give information about how to use harmonic analysis method for corrosion monitoring. Harmonik analiz bunlardan biridir. Bu metotla kinetik parametreler kısa sürede saptanabilir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, harmonic analizin korozyonun izlenmesinde kullanımı hakkında bilgi vermektir. 1. METHOD DESCRIPTION The determination of the rate of corrosion by the measurement of polarization resistance is most frequently employed. The corrosion current density is evaluated from Rp, the polarization resistance, using the Stern –Geary equation: icorr = b a bc 1 2,303(b a + bc ) R p where βa and βc are the anodic and cathodic Tafel slopes, respectively. Mansfeld1 compiled a comprehensive review of that technique in the mid-seventies while recently Nagy and Wesson2 published a thorough evaluation of it. In accordance with other authors they came to the conclusion that while the simplicity is an obvious advantage of the method, however, its application is hindered by systematic errors caused by arbitrary assumptions and simplifications. The most important sources of error are the following: a) Erroneous estimation of the Tafel slopes or their determination by extrapolation b) Determination of the polarization resistance using finite amplitude Instantaneous corrosion rate measurements are often obtained through the use of electrochemical measurements such as LP, ER and EIS. Probes are inserted into flow lines to conduct electrochemical measurements. Instruments employing techniques such as LP, ER and EIS can be coupled to automated systems, allowing for continuous monitoring of corrosion. For LP and ER, problems can arise if the pipeline solution has a low conductivity, and/or if the probe is coated by oil/hydrocarbon. Consequently, ER and LP probes must be carefully inserted into pipelines to ensure that they are immersed in water, yielding accurate readings. For this reason, they are often placed in a bypass loop, out of the main flow, where it is easier to keep them immersed in an aqueous phase 3. The disadvantages of the Corresponding author: E-mail : husnugerengi@duzce.edu.tr KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 29 aforementioned electrochemical corrosion monitoring techniques may be overcome by using a technique based on the measurement of harmonic currents. The main advantage of harmonic analysis (HA) is that the measurement of corrosion rate does not employ presumed values for the Tafel slopes4, and measurements can be undertaken in a fraction of the time of conventional methods (e.g., LP, ER and EIS). Rangarajan5, Devay and Meszaros6 proposed harmonic analysis method in corrosion measurements. In this method if the perturbing signal is a sinusoidal voltage then the corrosion current density can only be calculated from the current response at the fundamental and the second and third harmonics; without the need for the Tafel constants. The harmonic responses contain sufficient information to describe the anodic and cathodic process and the corrosion current; essentially, the fundamental and the two harmonics provide three equations, or data sets, which are solved to give three unknowns, Icorr, ba and bc 7. A major advantage of this method was also determination of both the Tafel constants and Stern-Geary B values. No other technique offers this facility. Also this method can be used in on-line corrosion monitoring systems. But, the voltage of angular frequency “w” and voltage amplitude “U0” must be correctly choose. REFERENCES 1. The current requirement was dominated by oxygen reduction during the initial stage of polarization after application of cathodic protection. However, as the calcareous scale deposited, oxygen reduction reaction rate decreased, and hydrogen evolution became the dominating cathodic process. Furthermore, the rate of hydrogen evolution appeared to become catalyzed by the presence of the calcareous scale deposit. Maximum Ca/Mg ratio in the calcareous deposit gave the best protection and minimum current requirement. The Ca/Mg maximum was determined by the applied potential and seawater flow rate. INTRODUCTION The significance of the oxygen reduction reaction on the formation of calcareous scale during cathodic protection of steel in seawater is widely studied. Factors such as temperature, pH, flow conditions and water composition strongly affect the precipitation of the calcareous deposit at the steel surface. During initial polarization oxygen reduction is the dominating reaction. It is well documented that oxygen reduction rate also affects the properties of the calcareous scale, which in turn determines the extent to which the current requirement is reduced1-3, an important aspect in the cathodic protection of steel in seawater. Little work is available on the significance of calcareous scale on hydrogen reaction rate. Hydrogen evolution can cause hydrogen embrittlement if atomic hydrogen diffuses into the steel material. Determination of hydrogen diffusion into the material is complex. Even though the reaction rate at the surface is measured, it is difficult to quan- Presented at the XI. Andresen et.al. found the hydrogen reaction rate was decreased as a result of cathodic protection in seawater because calcareous deposits at the surface reduced the active area4. Similarly, Ou and Wu report that the calcareous scale acted as a barrier for diffusion of hydrogen ions to the steel surface5, thereby reducing the rate of hydrogen evolution. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the hydrogen reaction during cathodic protection on carbon steel in natural seawater. The approach used was to polarize carbon steel specimens under scaled down laboratory conditions first potentiostatically at selected potentials in the range -800 through -1200 mVSCE to steady-state conditions with well defined calcareous scale properties. The contribution of hydrogen evolution to the steady-state current requirement was then investigated by potentiodynamic sweep runs on the polarized specimens without destroying the calcareous deposits formed. Scale-down for experiment: In earlier work in this labora- tory, an attempt was made to scale cathodic protection in the field to the laboratory scale by using an algorithm described in reference numbered 1. The main principle of downscaling is to assure that the thickness of diffusion layer for oxygen reduction on the steel sample obtained in the laboratory is identical to the thickness expected under realistic conditions on the steel structure in the field. In order to satisfy this condition, the flow rate in the laboratory has to be reduced significantly in relation to the flow rate in the field, assuming that the seawater properties used in the laboratory are identical to those in the field. The result is shown in Figure 1. For example, flow of seawater at a rate of 0.3 and 1 m/s around a 1 m diameter subsea structure can be simulated in the laboratory, respectively, by using flow rates of 1 and 10 cm/s past the small plate specimens. Velocity rectangular steel specimen [cm/s] 10 shown in Figure 3. A standard calomel electrode (SCE) was used as a reference electrode. Apparatus: Cathodic polarisation tests were performed in flowing fresh natural seawater, which was obtained from a depth 80 - 90 m in the Trondheim’s Fjord. Seawater was sand filtered and allowed to enter the flow channel by gravity. The seawater was not recycled. A cylindrical titanium flow channel was used with a total length of 2 m (Figure 3). The inner diameter of the channel was 52.8 mm. Ten specimen holes were evenly placed along the channel top. Eight sheet specimens and two SCE reference electrodes were mounted through the holes. Four specimens were connected to each of the reference electrodes. The steel sample surfaces were aligned parallel to the flow direction. The distance between the centres of the electrodes was 180 mm. The flow channel was used as a common counter electrode for all specimens. The channel was installed with a slope of 2° to prevent trapping of gas bubbles. 8 6 4 2 0 0,2 0,4 0,6 0,8 Velocity cylindrical pipeline [m/s] 1 1,2 Figure 1. Procedure: The electrochemical test procedure consisted of potentiostatic polarization of the steel specimen at selected potentials in the range -800 through -1200 mVSCE. The time of polarization the specimens were polarized from -1300 mVSCE to zero current. The sweep rate was 0.5 mV/s during the potensiodynamic polarization. Absence of hysteresis in the reverse-sweep data indicated that the calcareous scale, which was formed during potentiostatic polarization was not destroyed during the potentiodynamic run. 3 4 1 2 a) 2,5 3 3 3 i [A/m 2] 2 i [A/m 2] 1 2 b) 3,5 1,5 1 2,5 2 1,5 1 0,5 0,5 0 0 50 100 150 200 Tid [timer] 0 0 50 100 150 200 Tid [timer] Time [h] Time [h] 14 1 c) 12 2 i [A/m 2] Figure 4. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Polarization data: The cathodic current density is reported as a positive entity, as is often the case in the cathodic protection literature. All potentials are reported relative to SCE. The current density decreased immediately after application of the selected potential. Time to reach a steady state depended on the applied potential and flow rate. Figure 4 a-c show the current density transients for replicate specimens polarized at -800, -1100 and -1200 mV, respectively, at 5 cm/s. At -800 mV the current density attained a steady state after about 100 h. However, a current plateau was observed from about 10 to 30 h of polarization, indicating an induction period before the onset of calcareous scale deposition1. A similar plateau region was also observed at -900 mV. This trend was more significant at the higher flow rate, and it was not visible at the lower flow rate. The delay in the deposition of calcareous scale is attributed to longer time required to attain high enough pH at the surface due to a high (positive) applied potential and flow rate. As is well known, the surface pH has to exceed a critical value for the onset of scale deposition, and attainment of the critical value depends on the operating conditions4. At -1100 mV applied potential and 5 cm/s flow rate, the current density did not reach a steady state after about one week of polarization, as shown in Figure 4 b). This was also the case for -1000 mV at 5 cm/s, indicating that the deposition kinetics was slow for the entire test period under these conditions. KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 35 36 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 increased pH, shown in Figure 7c and 7d. Figure 7e shows that the calcareous deposit at a surface polarized at -1200 mV and 10 cm/s was covered by clusters of CaCO3 crystals. At -1200 mV and 1 cm/s, a relatively thick Mg(OH)2 layer was precipitated, and no calcium phase was present. Figure 8 shows the Ca/Mg ratio in the calcareous deposit as a function of potential for 1 and 10 cm/s. Ca/Mg ratio was determined by EDS analysis. Flow rate had a large influence on the chemical composition in the deposit. At -800 mV and 1 cm/s, the scale contained only Mg(OH)2. As the applied potential became more negative (-900 mV), the conditions for CaCO3 precipitation was improved due to increased surface pH. Figure 11a confirms calcium phase is formed at -900 mV and 1 cm/s. At -1000 mV, the pH is even higher, which favours CaCO3 precipitation. Maximum Ca/Mg ratio was obtained at -1000 mV and 1 cm/s, and the ratio decreased with decreasing potential. At low potentials the pH is high and the driving force for Mg(OH)2 precipitation is also high. In addition, magnesium causes an inhibition of CaCO3 deposition, as described earlier. Thus, the deposit consisted of only Mg(OH)2 at -1200 mV and 1 cm/s and no calcium phase was present. By increasing the velocity to 10 cm/s, the surface pH is decreased. Hence, calcium phase was not precipitated until the potential was decreased to -1000 mV at 10 cm/s. Figure 11b shows the absence of calcium in the scale formed at -900 mV and 10 cm/s. At 10 cm/s, the Ca/Mg ratio increased as the potential became more negative, and maximum Ca/Mg ratio was obtained at -1200 mV within the test potential range. High calcium content in the calcareous scale at -1200 mV and 10 cm/s, shown in Figure 7e, led to the minimum current demand at this flow rate, as indicated in Figure 6. This indi4 Ca/Mg ratio mined by the applied potential, flow rate and quality of the deposit. The contribution of hydrogen evolution to the steady state current was determined by using the potentiodynamic polarization plots obtained at the end of potentiostatic polarization runs. These plots normally consist of a limiting current section if the oxygen reduction reaction is still appreciable on the surface, as shown in Figure 5. The Tafel part corresponds to the hydrogen evolution reaction. The Tafel line was extrapolated to the potential applied during the potentiostatic run before the potentiodynamic run. Thus, the hydrogen current at this potential was determined from the extrapolated Tafel line, and the total current at the same potential was obtained from the measured polarization curve as shown in the figure. The current due to the oxygen reaction was obtained from Equation 1. The fraction of hydrogen current was then plotted as a function of the potentiostatic potential as shown in Figure 6, indicating that hydrogen evolution is the dominating reaction at or close to steady state for applied potentials ≤ -1000 mV. Calcareous deposits: As already indicated, the properties of calcareous deposit are strongly dependent on the applied potential and flow rate. The deposits are reported to contain Mg(OH)2 and CaCO3. The magnesium and calcium phases deposit, respectively, as a thin film and in the form of discrete crystalline particles6. Structure and chemical composition of the calcareous deposits are determined by the pH at the steel surface, which in turn is dependent on the applied potential and the flow conditions. The pH at the surface decreases as flow rate increases due to increased mass transfer of OH- from the surface. The pH increases with decreasing potential as a result of increased cathodic reaction rate at the surface, thus, increased production of OH-. To obtain a co-precipitation of CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2, the solution has to be oversaturated by both species. Saturation point depends on pH, and CaCO3 will theoretically precipitate at a lower pH than Mg(OH)27. Mantel et al. have proposed that CaCO3 precipitation is inhibited by magnesium in the solution6. Due to the slow kinetics of CaCO3 precipitation at about 10°C 8 and presumable magnesium inhibition, Mg(OH)2 can precipitate at a lower pH than CaCO3. With the foregoing background, the present results can be viewed. Figure 7a shows that calcium phase precipitated at -900 mV and 1 cm/s, but no calcium appeared at 10 cm/s, as shown in Figure 7b. Increasing flow rate caused a slower build-up of OH- at the surface, and the conditions for precipitation of a pure magnesium deposit were not present. By an additional decrease in potential, however, the Ca/Mg ratio is expected to drop also at the high flow rates. The slow decay of current towards a steady state at -1100 mV and 1 cm/s, as shown in Figure 4b, is attributed to slow CaCO3 deposition. Barchiche et al. found that the kinetics for CaCO3 deposition is slow at 10°C 8. This leads to slow stabilisation of the current. Present EDS analysis proved also that appreciable CaCO3 was deposited at -1000 and -1100 mVSCE at 1 cm/s and 10 cm/s. The same behaviour is expected for 5 cm/s, although complete data at this flow rate is not yet available. The expected trend in the Ca/Mg ratio is illustrated in Figure 8 as a function of applied potential and flow rate. As the flow rate increases, the maximum Ca/Mg ratio is expected to appear at lower potentials, and the maximum value is expected to increase with increasing flow rate. Increased Ca/Mg with increasing flow rate is also reported by Hartt et al.7 The present data, indicating a maximum Ca/Mg ratio at a specific applied potential and flow rate has not been reported in earlier studies. 4. SUMMARY The steady-state current increased with decreasing applied potential. Time to obtain steady-state condition increased as the flow rate increased. The kinetics of calcareous scale deposition decreased in the range -800 to -1100 mV with increasing flow rate. At -800 and -900 mV a plateau of current was established initially, indicating an induction period for scale deposition, and the current decreased after this period as a scale providing adequate diffusion limitation was formed. Hydrogen evolution was the dominating reduction reaction at calcareous surfaces at potentials lower than -950 to -1000 mV. Oxygen reduction contributed to the net current at more positive potentials. The Tafel slope for hydrogen evolution obtained by potentiodynamic polarization of specimens depended on pH at the surface. The Tafel slope increased with increasing potential and increasing flow rates, thus, with increasing pH. Structure and composition of the calcareous deposits was strongly dependent on the applied potential and flow rate. The kinetics for deposition of CaCO3 at potentiostatically polarized surfaces was slow at 8-10°C. CaCO3 precipitation depended on pH and was inhibited by magnesium in the solution. The kinetics for Mg(OH)2 precipitation was faster than CaCO3, and Mg(OH)2 was formed at all potentials and flow rates investigated. Deposits formed at -800 mV contained no calcium phase due to low pH value and partly due to inhibition of calcium phase deposition by magnesium present in the solution. CaCO3 was precipitated at -1000 and -1100 mV at 1, 5 and 10 cm/s. At 1 cm/s the maximum Ca/Mg was at -1000 mV, and the ratio decreased with more negative potentials due to magnesium inhibition and high driving force for Mg(OH)2 precipitation. At -1200 mV and 1 cm/s the calcareous scale contained only Mg(OH)2. At 10 cm/s, the Ca/Mg ratio increased from -1000 mV to -1200 mV. The pH at the surface is lower at 10 cm/s compared to 1 cm/s and the driving force for precipitation of a magnesium scale was less. Thus, higher flow rate favoured CaCO3 deposition. CaCO3 was precipitated at increasingly negative potentials as the flow rate increased, e.g., -900 mV at 1 cm/s and -1000 mV at 10 cm/s. The Ca/Mg ratio increased with increasing flow rate at -1100 mV and -1200 mV. At -900 and -1000 mV the Ca/Mg ratio decreased as the flow rate increased. REFERENCES 1. K. Bu testler beton iyileştirme sektöründe discrete anotların uygulaması yönünde etkili bilgiler sağlamaktadır. TESTING OF STARGARD DISCRETE* ANODES FOR CONCRETE Testing of discrete anodes was initiated in September 2006. The purpose of these tests is to investigate the operating characteristics of three types of discrete anodes installed in concrete blocks and to determine the relationship between acid formation/damage and operating current. The anodes were installed in existing blocks of concrete with two layers of 12.7 mm diam. rebars located 5cm and 10cm from the top surface. It was decided to test anodes installed in two grouts: Sika-223 and acid resistance modified Sika-223. The anodes tested were 19 mm x 100 mm Stargard, 25mmx 10 mm Stargard and 25mm x 100mm round. After drilling test holes and checking fit of the anodes it was decided to install 19mm anodes in holes drilled with a ¾” bit. and 25 mm anodes in holes drilled with a 1” bit. Duplicates anodes were installed so that each anode type could be cored and autopsied twice during the life of the test. It was decided to install and operate test blocks indoors rather than outdoors. A pond was installed on top of all blocks to prevent over-drying of the blocks in the dry laboratory environment. Blocks were operated on a two-week pond, two week dry cycle similar to test procedure in ASTM Standard Test Method G-109. All anodes were installed into test blocks on September 2, 2006 and were energized on September 9, 2006. The anodes were operated at different current densities: 36 mA/ft2 , 48 mA/ft2 and 72 mA/ft2. The initial current – voltage relationship was established for all anodes on September, 8th 2006. Anode- steel resistance for all anodes was measured on September, 25th, 2006. This paper is summarizes the status of these tests after 91 days online., 203 days online giving evidence of the appearance, resistance data and operating voltage of the anodes. One autopsy was conducted on two 19mm anodes and two 25 mm anodes after 235 days online coring the anodes and surrounding grout with a 2” diameter core drill. The removed core was then split and the anode and the surrounding examined for damage. Autopsy results are presented in the paper with full details and pictures. An additional autopsy was conducted on two 19 mm anodes and two 25 mm anodes after 404 days online. All the anodes had little Anode Reaction Products on the outside of the anode mesh and grout was still well adhered to the outside to the anodes. Extensive ARP was observed for all Stargard anodes on the interior of the mesh. This is not expected to impact long-term performance. Results were either excellent or good, based on the condition of * Ayrık anotların adı literatürde “DİSCRETE” olarak geçtiğinden bu makalede aynı tanım kullanılmaktadır. ** 22-25 Ekim 2008 tarihlerinde İzmir’ de yapılan XI.Uluslararası Korozyon Sempozyumu’ na sunulan bildirinin çevirisi *** Corresponding author. 38 KOROZYON, 17 (1-2), 2009 the grout on the outside surfaces. 4.4.3.3. Anot metali malzemesi, anot – beton ara yüzeyinde oluşacak elektro kimyasal reaksiyonlara karşı dayanıklı olacak şekilde seçilmelidir. 1. Anode-steel resistance after 17, 91 and 201 days.
