Growth rate of the industry more than doubled the GNP growth rate for the last 10 years. Turkish plastics Industry has grown by an annual average of 10,8 % during 2000 – 2012 period and 9,4 for the last 4 years. With 8,1 million tons of processing capacity, Turkish plastics industry shares 2,8 % of world plastics production which makes Turkey the 7th biggest producer in the world and 2nd in European Union after Germany. The industry comprises of nearly 14.000 companies operating in the industry which are producing and supplying inputs to the main exporter industries such as automotive, electrics, electronics, packaging, textile, construction etc. and are producing plastics and rubber processing machines and equipments. Around 99 % of the companies comprises of small and medium sized enterprises. As of 2012, 44 plastIcs converters take place among the first 1000 biggest firms in TurkIsh Manufacturing Industry. Their share in total productIon and exports in total Industry are decreasIng. The primary industries shaping the domestic consumption are packaging and construction materials as it is in the world and EU. The consumption ratios are about 40 % for packaging, 22 % for construction whereas the other industries hold a ratio between 4-10 %. The industry invested worth of USD billion 6,4 between 2003-2013. The average investment of last 3 years amounted as USD million 800. As of 2013, 230 companies have foreign shareholders. As far as the distribution of the foreign capital is concerned, Germany leads the way with 17 % and is followed by Italy with 10 %. Turkey is below the saturation point with about 80 Kg of domestic consumption per capita comparing with developed countries. This shows Turkish plastics industry has high potential demand high potential growth fort he future. In spite of the rapid growth trend enjoyed by plastics production, consumption and exports in Turkey, the domestic plastic raw material production capacity fails to meet the growing demand. Consequently, about 87 % of the plastic raw material demand is met by imports. The majority of plastics finished-products manufactured by using modern production technologies are exported in Turkey. The industry’s direct exports in 2013 amounted to a total of about USD 5,6 billion comprising of about USD 1,0 billion of raw materials and USD 4,6 billion of finished-products. Indirect exports realized as USD 6,4 billion in 2013. Turkey exports plastics products to more than 150 countries. Iraq, Germany, Russian Fed. Azerbaijan and UK are the top 5 countries with the greatest share in Turkey’s plastic product exports in 2013. In 2013, the first 10 countries accounted for 52 % of total plastics product exports. Turkish government has prepared an export vision statement, having goals to be reached by 2023, covering all the industries. According to this statement, chemistry industry, which includes the plastics, is expected to export goods worth $50 billion in 2023 and of this amount, 51% ($22,5 billion) is expected to be actualised by plastics and rubber industries. Plastics exports will share USD billion 17 of total chemistry exports of 50 billion $ TURKISH PLASTIC INDUSTRY PROFILE BY 2013 TOTAL PROCESS CAPACITY 8,1 MILLION TON PRODUCTION VALUE 34 BILLION USD VALUE ADDED TO MACRO ECONOMY 13 USD BILLION GROWTH RATE % 13,5 POSITION BY PROCESS CAPACITY SECOND AFTER GERMANY IN EU SEVENTH IN WORLD EMPLOYMENT 250.000 NO OF COMPANIES OPERATING 14.000 - % 98 SME NO OF FOREIGN COMPANIES 252 FIRMS FISRT 5 : GERMANY, ITALY, FRANCE, NETHERLANDS, IRAN DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION 7,2 MILLION TON - 32,7 BILLION USD PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION 93 KG PLASTICS PRODUCTION BY INDUSTRIES PACKAGING : % 40 BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION : % 22 ELECTRICS & ELECTRONICS : % 10 AGRICULTURE : % 6 TEXTILE : % 4 AUTOMOTIVE : % 4 OTHERS : % 14 IMPORT DEPENDENCY (SHARE OF IMPORTS) PE: % 78 PP: % 94 PVC: % 85 PET: % 48 PS: % 91 OTHERS: % 100 TOTAL: % 87 EXPORTS TOTAL EXPORTS 2,1 MILLION TONS – 5,6 BILLION USD RAW MATERIALS EXPORTS 591.000 TONS – 1,03 BILLION USD END PRODUCTS EXPORTS 1,5 MILLION TONS – 4,6 BILLION USD INDIRECT EXPORTS BY EXPORTS BY EXPORTER INDUSTRIES 6,4 USD BILLION TOTAL FOREIGN CURRENCY EARNINGS 12 USD BILLION SHARE OF INDUSTRY EXPORTS IN TOTAL CHEMICAL 30 % EXPORTS 5 MAJOR EXPORT MARKETS PLASTICS RAW MATERIALS GERMANY, RUSSIAN FED., ITALY, EGYPT, IRAN PLASTICS END PRODUCTS IRAQ, GERMANY, RUSSIAN FED. The machine and equipment investments of the industry, which were USD million 288 in 2003, peaked in 2011 with USD million 885. The total machine equipment investments within 2003 – 2013 realised as 6,4 billion USD and the avarage investments of the last 3 years as 800 million USD. The37 % of the said amount was formed by presses and other machinesi 24 % of by injections, % 18 of by extrusion, % 11 of by equipments and % 10 by termoform and blowmoldin mavhines. Turkey, is in a situation that it cannot meet the 70 – 80 % of the demand for plastics processing machines, accessories and parts through imports, is a net importer regarding the aforementioned manufactures and cannot provide enough added value with low export prices when compared to the developed countries. While the plastics industry is developing swiftly, the production of plastics processing machines are not developing in parallel with the said manner and the industry is continuously losing its ground due to cheap plastics machines producer countries, particularly China. The gradual downsizing in the plastics processing machine industry in Turkey Plastics is caused by the fact that there is not a state strategy towards the processing machines industry, the domestic manufacturers are not protected enough and that the plastics product manufacturers prefer cheap and second hand machine imports in order to get the edge over competition. A manufacture of USD million 339, imports of USD million 527, exports of USD million 134 and domestic market sales of USD million 732 (machines and equipment investment of plastics industry) occurred in the plastics processing machines and their accessories and parts industry in 2013. It can be observed that the 72 % of the domestic sales were provided by imports, that the 39 % of the total production was exported and that the export coverage ratio of import was 25 % for the plastics processing machines and their accessories and parts industry in 2013.
