İngilizce her derdi çözüyor. Aynı zamanda şu cümlelere kanmayın;“halo my friend, only one. For you. oo Turkish, Selamunaleykum”. The EU has awarded its beaches the Blue Flag, which is a benchmark guaranteeing the highest of standards both in terms of the quality of the water and the sand and of the services. The history of Lloret dates back to the third and second centuries BC. Throughout all these years of history, Lloret, despite being a modern and dynamic tourist town, has retained its personality and preserved the symbols of identity and tradition which only time can bestow. To the wide range of tourism opportunities can be added the cultural, scenic and architectural delights which, togeher with the two Iberian settlements, comprise a great variety of activities to satisfy the widest and most demanding of tastes. Lloret is considered to be one of the tourist resorts with the most sporting facilities and with a variety of shopping, leisure and culinary opportunities which, together with the hotel and apartment infrastructure, places it firmly in first place, in terms of name, variety and quality, of all the tourist regions in Spain. THE HISTORY ( TARİHÇE ) The history of Lloret de Mar is undeniably linked to the idea of hospitality and the open and welcoming nature of the townspeople. Back in ancient times, in the fourth and third centuries BC, the Iberians living in the settlements of Montbarbat and Puig de Castellet had already established relations and contact with other cultures enabling them to obtain goods and pottery from Greece and Rome. Later, it was the Romans themselves who settled in what is now Lloret and who, through the trading post on Fenals beach, established commerce along the coast with neighbouring settlements such as Empúries and Barcelona. Numerous finds from this period are still in existence today: the Iberian settlements of Puig de Castellet, Montbarbat, Turó Rodó and Coll de Llop and the Roman Sepulchre. The name Lloret -LO-REDO- appeared in written form for the first time in 966 AD. Different studies attribute the origins of this name to the Latin LAURETUM, meaning place of laurels. Shortly after, in 1001, the Counts of Barcelona, Ramon Borrell and Ermessenda, marked out the boundaries of Lloret de Mar - which until then had been part of MAÇANEDO - and gave it to Sunifred, Viscount of Girona. During this period, two unique constructions were built: the Sant Joan's tower (on top of the hill separating the beaches of Lloret and Fenals), which acted as a watchtower and refuge; and the primitive church of Sant Romà (now known as Nostra Senyora de les Alegries), which, despite having been extensively renovated, still retains characteristic features of the Romanesque style. At that time, the town was a scattering of peasants' houses situated mainly inland, so it is not surprising that the first parish church is so far from Lloret's present town centre. Gradually, though, some families began to set up home close to the sea as the Sant Joan's tower doubtless afforded them protection and provided refuge against possible attacks from pirates, the Turks, the French or the English. The Lloretencs who lived close to the sea traded in goods made inland (firewood, wood, charcoal, etc.) and worked as fishermen and in trading up and down the coast, which, eventually, began to take on more importance. It appears that at that time links were made with towns on the Italian coast, which were to have a lasting effect on our culture, our traditions and even our names. The church was built in the prevailing Catalan Gothic style and it was decided that the new parish church would also have to serve as a refuge for the faithful during pirate attacks. The bell tower was filled with merlons and loopholes, and the gate - which in fact was a drawbridge - led into a very deep ditch. In the middle of the eighteenth century, there were many Lloret sailors who went to the Americas, although not all declared this. But then in 1778, King Carles III pronounced the Free Trade Decree with the American colonies. This event not only led to a great upsurge in naval work in our town (between 1812 and 1869, 130 ships were built here), but it also saw the rise and flourishing of our merchant marine. Based on the Lloret merchant marine, a whole import and export trade grew up, which made large parts of our population rich. Ships sailed for Santiago de Cuba, Havana, Montevideo, Buenos Aires loaded with wines, oils, textiles, salt, flour and other goods and returned to Catalonia laden with cotton, hardwoods, hides, sugar, tobacco, coffee, rum, dried beef, etc. Many Lloretencs took an active part in the trading and invested money in the construction of ships and the purchase of trading goods. A sea captain, consequently, was much more than a transporter but was also a speculator who tried to get the most profit possible from the load he carried. Besides this, the trans-oceanic trade of the nineteenth century also opened people's eyes to the possibilities for wealth offered by the Americas. Many emigrants took advantage of the ease of sailing to the Americas at that time to establish themselves in the New World to seek their fortunes by dint of hard work. If things went well for them and they made their fortunes, sooner or later they returned to their native town. These were known as "Americanos" or "Indianos" - the ones who had gone to the Americas poor, made a fortune and returned to their home town with vast amounts of money which allowed them to live on the profits. When they returned, the town band would greet them, they would marry a young girl, knock down their old houses and have a majestic Neo-Classical, eclectic or Modernist mansion built, order a mausoleum to be built in the new cemetery and devote the rest of their lives to good works. So, before long, Lloret became home to large numbers of rich, young widows, elegant streets and squares, a sumptuous Modernist cemetery - with works by leading architects of the day such as: Puig i Cadafalch, A. Gallissà, Conill i Montobbio - and a number of outstanding public buildings: the Town Hall, Modernist reforms to the church, the parish schools, etc. Between 1880 and 1920, the physical layout of Lloret de Mar underwent radical change. Despite this, the figure of the "Americano" went into decline after the 1920s and, with it, the town began a long period of stagnation, which lasted for about thirty years. Despite the interesting tourism initiatives of the 1930s - curtailed by the Civil War - it was not until the 1950s that Lloret's new way of life based on the tourist economy was established. At that point, a new urban transformation was set in motion: the old mansions were steadily pulled down and turned into hotels and service facilities; vineyards, woods and fields were built on and new suburbs and urbanisations emerged. This tourist activity has led to Lloret currently having a wide range of hotels and shops, excellent sports facilities - with athletics tracks, sports centres, football pitches, etc. - and a broad variety of leisure facilities. Welcome, then, to Lloret de Mar, a historically welcoming town, which is preparing itself for the new challenges of the twenty-first century. TRADITIONS ( GELENEKLER ) BALL DE PLAÇA (THE DANCE IN THE SQUARE) This dance, also known as the Dansa de les Almorratxes, ("Dance of the Almorratxes") has been held since time immemorial. It dates from an ancient Church Candle Dance to mark the taking of possession by new church wardens. Although the music is reminiscent of eighteenth- or even nineteenth-century music, the dance has much older roots and is undeniably Moorish in origin, as can be seen from the use of a glass jar with four spouts, known as an almorratxa, which the male dancers carry full of perfumed water and which they offer afterwards to the female dancer. Tradition has it that in the age when the Catalan coast was under frequent attack by Muslims and Barbarians, a rich, young Moor came to Lloret and fell madly in love with a Christian maiden from the town. The young man tried different ways to convince the girl to marry him; but because of the difference in religion, the girl always rejected him. Finally, one day when there was a dance, the Moorish boy presented himself before the crowd dressed in his finest clothes. He approached the maiden and offeed her a glass jar (the almorratxa) filled with perfumed water. The girl, indignant at his daring, took the jar and threw it to the ground, where it smashed into bits. It is said that the Moor, ashamed, returned to Africa and that the saddened girl shut herself away in a convent. Today, the Dansa de les Almorratxes is celebrated every year from 24th to 26th July, with four pairs of dancers. The girls wear long elegant dresses - usually white - and the boys are also well dressed in dark suits. The girls are the four female church wardens of Santa Cristina, who are chosen for a year. The male church wardens, curators of the Santa Cristina hermitage, who are elected for four years and are older than the maidens, simply accompany the maidens on their arm into the square as though presenting them at court and give them away immediately to the four male dancers previously chosen by the four female church wardens. During the first part of the dance, with slow, ceremonial music, each pair dances holding each other's right hand. Then, to symbolise the episode between the Moorish man and the Christian girl, the four girls grab the almorratxa and hurl it to the ground. It is said that if the jar breaks, the girl will marry during the following year. The act ends with festive music, very different from the earlier tune, known as "Toquen a córrer (Run Away)". Summer Festa Major - Santa Cristina, Sant Elm. 24th, 25th and 26th July. Winter Festa Major - Sant Romà. 18th November. PLACES OF INTEREST ( GÖRÜLMESİ GEREKEN YERLER ) PARISH CHURCH The Church of Sant Romà was built in 1522 and, in keeping with the architecture of the age, is in Catalan Gothic-style. This church replaced the earlier Church of Sant Romà - now called the Church of les Alegries - as Lloret's town centre moved from the hinterland to the coast. In those days, the coast was threatened by constant attack from Turkish and Algerian pirates, who killed, burned, kidnapped, ransacked... This is why it was decided that the new parish church also had to act as a refuge for the faithful during pirate raids. The bell tower was filled with merlons and loopholes, and the gate - which in fact was a drawbridge - led into a very deep ditch. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Lloret's wealth, especially with the return of the "Americanos", allowed for large-scale reforms to be made to the parish church. On the Gothic base, the architect, Bonaventura Conill i Montobbio, applied the prevailing Modernist designs and created a spectacular building with Byzantine, Muslim and Renaissance traces. The restoration work began in 1914. Shortly after, in 1920, the parish schools were also founded. The Civil War in 1936, however, led to the destruction of nearly all the Modernist design and today only the Capella del Santíssim (or sacristy) remains as a clear indication of what the renovation of the parish church was like. THE CASTLE ( KALE ) This building, situated at the end of the Sa Caleta beach, is in fact a house-castle built by the Girona industrialist, Narcís Plaja. The project, dating from 1935, was the work of the Girona architect, Isidor Bosch. Construction work, though, was not completed until the 1940s, once the Civil War had finished. The construction of the building was surrounded by controversy among the local people. Despite this, however, the image of the castle has become one of the symbols identifying Lloret, as, year in year out, it is the subject of postcards and photos taken by the thousands of tourists visiting the town. DONA MARINERA Since it was erected in 1966 to commemorate Lloret de Mar's Millennium, the Dona Marinera (Sailor's Wife) has become one of the most emblematic symbols of the town. This bronze sculpture, created by the artist, Ernest Maragall, stands on the rock at the end of Lloret beach and represents the figure of a woman looking out to sea in greeting or welcome. The sculpture, entitled "The Venus of Lloret", gives the Lloret coastline an element of great beauty and quality. Legend has it that whoever touches the foot of the sculpture while looking out at the horizon, will have their wish come true. SANTA CRISTINA HERMITAGE Recognised as a hermitage in 1376, growing popular devotion led to the building of the sanctuary between 1764 and 1772. The building is in Neo-Classic Baroque style, with Latin Cross floor plan, three side chapels each side and crowned by a cupola. The vestry was added in 1786. The door is a profusely decorated flat arch with a niche on top containing an image of the saint. The other doors and windows are square and it has a belfry on the top of one of the side walls. Inside, what is believed to be the saint's skull is preserved. The tradition goes that a young shepherd found an image of Santa Cristina in the place where the present hermitage is situated. Surprised, the boy hurried to tell the priest and the rest of the town. Straight away, the local people organised a procession to carry the image to the parish church (which was then the present "Alegries" church). THE BARCELONA OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES (BARSELONA OLİMPİYAT OYUNLARI) Barselona’ya 1992 olimpiyat oyunlarına ev sahipliği yapma şansı verildi. THE BEGINNINGS OF THE GAMES: THE OLYMPIC TORCH (OYUNLARIN BAŞLANGICI – OLİMPİYAT MEŞALESİ) Haziran 1992 başlarında Yunanistan’ın Olimpia kentinden, Hera Tapınağı’nda yakılan 25. 25. Olimpiyat meşalesinin yakılması için tasarlanan her karede tasarımcı Andre Richard’ın imzası vardı. OPENING AND CLOSING CEREMONIES OF THE GAME (OLİMPİYATIN AÇILIŞ VE KAPANIŞ SERAMONİSİ) Açılış ve kapanış seremonileri Olimpiyat Stadyumu’nda yapıldı. 1955 yılından beri, her sene Avrupa arenasında mücadele etmektedir. COSTUMS ( BARSELONA’DA YAŞAM ) Meal times In Barcelona, like elsewhere in Spain, meals are usually served later than in the rest of Europe. Breakfast, the first meal of the day, is between 9am and 11am. It is usually lighter than in other European countries and resembles a "continental breakfast" in hotels. Families have lunch between 2pm and 3pm, and dinner between 9pm and 10pm. In restaurants the meal times are adapted to the usual working hours and lunch can be had between 1pm and 3pm. Restaurants serve dinner between 9pm and about 11.30pm. There are some specialised restaurants, however, where meals are served round the clock. Working hours The work day usually begins at 8 or 9am, with the lunch break at 1.30 or even 2pm. People are on the job again between 3 and 4pm and the work day ends between 6 and 7.30pm. Shop hours The shops in Barcelona open their doors at 9 or 10am and close for lunch at 1.30pm. They re-open in the afternoon at 4 or 5pm and remain open until 8 or 8.30pm. The shopping malls and large retail outlets do not close for lunch. All retail outlets, including small shops and department stores, open on Saturday afternoons, while all close on Sunday, except for some special establishments with permission to open. Show times, Cinemas and theatres, Cinemas usually run four sessions a day between 4 and 10pm. Theatres hold one performance daily, usually between 9 and 10.30pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and between 6 and 7pm on Sundays. Some theatres, however, hold two performances a day: the first around 6pm and the second at about 10pm. Pubs and music bars : usually open from 6.30pm to 3am, while discotheques open at 11.30pm and close at about 5.30am. Social customs of the Barcelonans: It is becoming increasingly common for Barcelonans to go out on weekday evenings. Friday and Saturday evenings, however, are the liveliest, since then people go to restaurants to dine, or to a show or a concert, etc, and this is also when the younger people fill the discotheques, music bars, jazz clubs, and so on. On Saturday afternoon there is a great deal of activity in the shops in the city centre, and the coffee shops are a good place to relax from the day's bustle and meet with friends to chat. Sunday morning is when people take a walk in the city. In Barcelona it is not as common to go "tapa-eating" as in other cities in Spain, but people usually do have an aperitif on the cafe terraces when the sun shines, or indoors if the weather is less pleasant. Many people also customarily spend their week-ends away from the city. The most beautiful dance : The poet Joan Maragall described the typical folkdance of Catalonia in these words: "The sardana is the most beautiful dance of all the dances that are done and undone...". Every Sunday morning, people of all ages gather to dance the sardana to the sound of the cobles or bands that take their place in Barcelona's Cathedral Square. Şu an kilisenin tadilatı bağışlar ile devam etmekte. YEAR 2002, THE GAUDI YEAR ( 2002 – GAUDİ YILI ) On 23 December 1999, the celebration of the International Gaudí Year on the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Catalan architect's birth was presented to the media at an act that took place at the Saló de Cent in the building housing the Barcelona City Council. The Gaudí year is an initiative of the Barcelona City Council that was passed by the plenary council on 28 April 1999. The plenary council unanimously decided to declare the year 2002 International Gaudí year. A programme of activities for the inhabitants of Barcelona, as well as for visitors from around the world, is planned for the Gaudí Year, so that it will become a major event having international reverberations. PASSEIG DE GRACIA In this boulevard, between the streets Consell de Cent and Aragó on the south-western side, stands the famous street block popularly known as l'illa de la discòrdia , due to the contrast in the architecture of its buildings, all from the first decade of the 20th century. The building at the seaward end of the block is<the Lleó Morera mansion, by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, in modernist floral style. There follow two buildings of a modernised Louis XV type, by Enric Sagnier, and the neo-Gothic Amatller mansion , with ornamentation of polychrome tiles, by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, followed by the Batlló house , with a mosaic façade and a tiled roof, by Antoni Gaudí. A little further up the street, on the right-hand side on the corner with Carrer Provença, there is the Milà mansion 'La Pedrera', designed by Gaudí shortly after the termination of the Batlló house . The originality of La Pedrera is not limited to the sculptural forms of its façade, but also extends to the interior of the building. LA PEDRERA (The Stone Quarry) (TAŞ OCAĞI) On the Passeig de Gràcia, at the Carrer de Provença, you can find one of the most interesting buildings in the city, and the one that today also receives the most visitors: the 1905 Casa Milà, also called La Pedrera , one of Antoni Gaudí's great buildings. La Pedrera, or Casa Milà, is a veritable abstract monumental sculpture formed by organic shapes. The two patios should be visited, and if you ask for permission, you can visit the roof, where the chimneys and air vents form an impressive group of abstract sculptures, making the visitor feel transported to a spectacular dream world. Huertas Claveria, the author of the book, "50 vegades Barcelona" (Fifty Times Barcelona), describes it in this way: "Its façade, in the shape of waves of stone, throwing the wrought-iron balconies into relief, is topped by a group of himneys covered by ceramic tiles on the roof, defined as a garden of wars by the poet Pere Gimferrer".It is now the main venue for the Caixa de Catalunya Foundation. The first floor is perfect for exhibitions and there is a unique auditorium in the basement. The paintings on the hall ceiling, and the lift, are particularly interesting. The restoration was directed by the architect Josep Emili Hernández Cros. THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY FAMILY ( KUTSAL AİLE TAPINAĞI ) Situated to one side of the Plaça de la Sagrada Família, between the streets Marina, Provença, Sardenya and Mallorca, stands the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, which was initially a neo-Gothic project designede by the architect Francesc de Paula del Villar. Gaudí was commissioned to continue the work in 1891, and replaced the existing project with a much more ambitious one which resulted in the enormous present-day structure. Sagrada Familia aspires to be a symbolic construction. It has three monumental façades: the east front, dedicated to the Birth of Christ; the west front, dedicated to the Passion and Death; and the south front, the façade of the Glorification, the largest of all. The four towers of each of the three façades jointly symbolise the twelve apostles. A dome- shaped tower which crowns the apse is the symbol of the Mother of God, and the four large towers dedicated to the evangelists encircle the central spire, which symbolises the Saviour. THE PARC GUELL The Parc Güell is situated on the Carmel hill, which, along with that of La Creueta and the Muntanya Pelada, separates the district of Gràcia from that of Horta. The financier Eusebi Güell decided to construct a garden city on the old estate of Can Montaner, and commissioned the project to Gaudí. Only two houses came to be built within the enclosure of the Park, which was conserved as such and which is now a municipal garden. The whole of the urban development part was realised between the years 1900 and 1914. THE PALAU DE LA MUSICA CATALANA At the corner of Carrer Amadeu Vives stands this building, the work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a follower of Gaudí. The Palau de la Música dates from 1908, and its interior is the most important testimony of the modernist style. Here we find polychrome materials (tiled mosaics, stained glass); the floral themes and the figures with the body in mosaic and the bust in relief are by Eusebi Arnau. To the left of the stage there is a willow tree in stone, sculpted by Pau Gargallo, evoking Catalan folk song in the person of Anselm Clavé and the girls of the song "Les Flors de Maig". The right-hand side evokes international music, with the bust of Beethoven and the ride of Wagner's Valkyries. The Palau de la Música was created as the home and the concert hall of the Orfeó Català, a great choral society founded a few years earlier by the composer Lluís Millet. It should be noted here that the Orfeó Català has had great importance in the revaluation of Catalan popular music. The most charming corners of our city are its small squares, very often hidden away, like the Placeta de Sant Just or that of Sant Felip Neri, and alleys that still conserve the charm of ancient times, such as Carrer del Call, Carrer de Paradís and others no less representative of Roman and medieval Barcelona, or streets like Montcada, which was one of the city's noble arteries during the 14th century. To explore these places, we have to enter into the very heart of the old city. At the core of this old town there are many captivating spots, full of history and tradition, as corresponds to a city whose oldest stones date back to times that are distant but also very close in the real presence of their architectural manifestations. We will understand and appreciate better these corners if we recall that the origins of present-day Barcelona lie in the small rise of the Tàber. The city gradually extended across the plain surrounded by the hills of Monterols, the Putget, the Creueta, the Carmel, the Muntanya Pelada and the Turó de la Peira. The tribe of the Laietans who settled there converted it into the ancient Iberian town of Laia, which doubled in extension after being conquered by the Romans, who gave it the name of Colònia Favència Júlia Augusta Paterna Barcino. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA AND RAMBLA DE CATALUNYA All cities have, among their most important thoroughfares - due to being vital arteries of communications especially in large cities - a number of streets which are broad, busy commercial avenues, and which conserve a special attraction which is due, no doubt, to their past, which is not lost despite the modifications and remodellings necessary to adapt them to the changing times. In Barcelona, this phenomenon is clearly seen in streets such as Passeig de Gràcia, and especially in Rambla de Catalunya. The terraces of the cafeterias give them life, together with the variety of traditional shops and the brightly-lit entrances to the modern commercial galleries. Rambla de Catalunya, which is 30 metres wide and runs from the Diagonal to Plaça de Catalunya, has conserved the elegance of its tree-lined central passage. At its crossroads with Gran Via we find a small illuminated fountain, with four putti figures riding dolphins. And we must not overlook two monuments located at the beginning and end of the street: a bull and a giraffe, called Meditació and Coqueta, respectively, made by Josep Granyer in 1972. The installation of these figures was sponsored by the residents of Rambla de Catalunya. This thirty-metre-wide avenue that begins at the Diagonal and ends at Plaça de Catalunya has conserved the charm of its central tree-lined promenade. Passeig de Gràcia was, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the residential centre of the highest ranks of the Catalan bourgeoisie. Few of their houses had shops on the ground floor in those days, but since 1925 many of these buildings have been transformed and now have commercial establishments at street level. This boulevard follows the straight line traced by the old road from Barcelona to the village of Gràcia, which has long been absorbed by the expansion of the city. In 1827 this road was converted into a broad, tree-lined avenue. Unlike today, the central part was for the use of pedestrians. In 1853 gas lighting was installed. In 1848 an Italian landscape gardener planted along the edges a series of gardens which he called Tívoli, a name which is still conserved by the theatre in Carrer de Casp. The Rambla is a boulevard that is transformed with the hours of the day and of the night. Few streets have such a marked capacity for changing their appearance, the rhythm of their life and even their smells and colours, depending on the season of the year and the time of day. In addition to being a street that preserves almost entirely its original characteristics, it has had, like no other thoroughfare, a capacity to assimilate the traces of the many and varied events that have taken place here during the different periods of its history. The Rambla is a street, and an experience, that remain in the memory. Until 1860, the year in which Barcelona finally broke out from behind its city walls, the city extended no further than the hexagon of the 15th century enclosure (the present-day Casc Antic) that lies between these streets: the Rondes de Sant Pau, de Sant Antoni, d'Universitat, and de Sant Pere, the Passeig de Lluís Companys, the Avinguda Marquès de l'Argentera, which continues as the Passeig Colom, and the Avinguda del Paral.lel. The only wide street at the heart of the city was La Rambla, an old stream whose name derives from the Arabic "ramla" meaning "sandy ground". Until the beginning of the 18th century La Rambla consisted merely of a path beside a stream running between convents on one side and the old city walls on the other. It was in 1704 that the first houses were put up at the Boqueria on the site of the old city walls and the first trees were planted. In 1775 the old city walls by the Drassanes medieval shipyards were demolished, and toward the end of the 18th century the street began to be systematically developed: la Rambla became a kind of tree-lined avenue. From upper end, which runs into the Plaça Catalunya, to the lower end below the monument to Columbus, this unique street in fact bears five different names, each describing a section of the street: first, there is La Rambla de Canaletes, a name used by the people of Barcelona because of the Font de les Canaletes fountain, found there since ancient times. Folk tradition has it that anyone who drinks from this fountain will subsequently keep returning to Barcelona. The next section of La Rambla is known as La Rambla dels Estudis, after the mid-15th century building of that name, the Estudi General or Universitat. This university in Barcelona was suppressed by Philip V and the building used as a barracks. In 1843 it was demolished. If you continue down toward the sea you will enter the stretch known as La Rambla de les Flors, the only place in 19th-century Barcelona that flowers were sold and which even today preserves its that old special charm. Next comes La Rambla del Centre, also known as La Rambla dels Caputxins, because of the old house of Capuchin friars there. And finally, there is the stretch of La Rambla called La Rambla de Santa Mònica, giving access to the port, called after the parish church there which previously had been the religious house of the Agustins Descalços (Barefoot Augustinian order). RAMBLA DE MAR (MERKEZ SAHİL BÖLGESİ) At the bottom the Rambla de Santa Mònica is the square known as the Plaça Portal de la Pau. Near the Drassanes (old shipyards) rises the monument built in memory of Cristopher Columbus and the fact that the port of arrival after his first return voyage from America and the site of his first audience with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella was Barcelona. The monument, built in 1886 by the architect Gaietà Buigas Monravà, consists of a great iron column on a stone base topped by a statue of the navigator. Inside the monument there is a lift that takes you up to the crown beneath the statue, from where you can enjoy a good view of the port, Montjuïc, the Drassanes and the city as a whole. Rambla de Mar (footbridge) Crossing over the Passeig de Colom, next to the building of the Port Autònom, a wavy wooden walkway knwn as the Rambla de Mar (Rambla of the Sea) stretches out over the water of the port as far as the wharf opposite, the Moll d'Espanya. This jetty, designed by Helio Piñon and Albert Viaplana, came into use in September 1994. Coming as it does at the end of a roadway as ancient, historic and colourful as the Barcelona Rambla - a street that is quite unique the Rambla de Mar, of recent creation, is a welcome innovation, taking its place among the great reforms carried out over the last few years to open up the city to the sea, and offering the inhabitants of Barcelona and visitors to the city an opportunity to enjoy the sea at first-hand. THE FOUNTAINS OF MONTJUÏC The fruit of the inspiration of the engineer Carles Buïgas, who conceived a new type of fountain where the artistic element consists in the changing shapes of the water, the Magic Fountain was one of the last works constructed in the grounds of the Universal Exhibition of 1929. The project was completed with cascades and smaller fountains installed at various points of Avinguda Maria Cristina. The fundamental element, however, was the monumental fountain situated on a platform erected at the end of the avenue, with the perspective of the Palau Nacional as a backdrop. THE CATHEDRAL OF BARCELONA The most distant origins of the Cathedral of Barcelona correspond to a basilica with tree naves which was destroyed by Al -Mansur (925). The remains of this basilica can be seen in the City History Museum . Around 1046, a new cathedral was commenced at the initiative of Bishop Guislabert. We have few references to this building: it is believed to have occupied a part of the Gothic building, but some of its Romanesque elements remain. EL PARC DE LA CIUTADELLA In 1714 Barcelona fell to the army of Philip V after a long siege. The dogged resistance of the city meant that its new rulers wanted to keep it under firm control. A year later, Philip V ordered a giant new garrison fort, the largest in Europe, to be built in order to guard the city. The buildings of the Ribera district were demolished and in their place, in 1716, the new fortifications began to be erected, paid for by the city itself. In 1841, the Junta de Vigilància (Board of the Guard) began to dismantle it, but under the Regency it was restored in 1843. After the anti-Bourbon revolution of September 1868, the Catalan general Joan Prim decided to turn over the garrison fort, the Ciutadella, to the city, which from 1869 to 1888 had it pulled down, this time definitively. All that was preserved was the Governor's palace, the chapel and the arsenal. In 1888 Barcelona held a Universal Exhibition, inspired by Mayor Rius i Taulet, and the park was built on the grounds of the demolished Ciutadella.
