A dı ‘MÜZE’ olan bir dergide anmadan geçmek mümkün değil: Bu yıl, Müze-i Hümayun yani İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzesi’nin 120’inci kuruluş yıldönümü. Müzecilik tarihinin ölümsüz ismi Osman Hamdi Bey’in kurduğu müze, 13 Haziran 1891 günü kapılarını ziyaretçilerine açtı. In a publication bearing the name “Museum” such as ours, it is not allowed to omit reminding that this year, we celebrated the 120th anniversary of the inauguration of the Imperial Musem, the Müze-i Hümayun, later called the İstanbul Museum of Archaeology. The museum was founded 120 years ago by the hero of the history of Turkish museums, Osman Hamdi Bey, and opened its gates on 13 June 1891. These gates were never closed up until today, even throughout the years of war. In the period following the opening of the museum, the Ottoman Empire’s territories were reduced in dramatic dimensions. In contrary, the ‹stanbul Archaeological Museum continued to substantially enlarge its collections so as to include a great number of treasures representing the history of the glorious past centuries and the memory of the once conquered lands. Eventually, subdivided in several buildings, the museum became ‘plural’ and took the name of “Archaeological Museums of ‹stanbul”. Various regions of a large geography stretching from Mesopotamia to the Balkans, from Egypt to Afghanistan meet each other in these ‘Museums’ presently 120 years old. In doing so, they follow the path of the numerous civilizations which flourished on the Anatolian soil throughout thousands of years of history. The publication you are holding in your hands is a modest contribution to the effort aimed at bequeathing this unique heritage to future generations. We thank you for sharing our enthusiasm. Until next time... HATTUSHA is expecting its sphinx! THE HATTUSHA SPHINX WHICH WAS SENT TO GERMANY IN 1915 TO BE CLEANED AND RESTORED, BUT WHICH WAS KEPT AT THE PERGAMON MUSEUM IN BERLIN UP TO THE PRESENT, IS FINALLY RETURNING HOME AFTER A CENTURY. Hattuşa Sfenksi uzun yıllar boyunca Pergamon Müzesi’nin en kıymetli parçası oldu (solda). Hattuşa Örenyeri, Aslanlı Kapı (sağda). The Hattusha Sphinx has been the preeminent artefact on display at the Pergamon Museum for many years (on the left). Hattusha Archaeological Site, Lions’ Gate (on the right). 6 7 oynu bükük kalmıştı Hattuşa’nın… One of its protectors was thousands of kilometres away. It kept hoping that its child would return one day... And finally its hopes are coming to fruition... The Hattusha (Boğazköy) Sphinx which was sent to Germany nearly one hundred years ago is ultimately on its way back to its homeland. The Anatolian soil was homeland to so many civilizations. Numerous objects constituting the heritage of these civilizations were uprooted from their place of origin. Recent developments indicate that the opposite trend is now gaining momentum. The Sphinx, unearthed during the excavations carried out at the beginning of the last century, at the site of Hattusha, the capital city of the Hittite Kingdom (1650-1200 BC), which was then sent to Germany for maintenance and repair is now counting the days to return to its home after nearly one hundred years. Let’s examine first the origins of the archaeological work undertaken long-time ago at the Hattusha historical site situated within the borders of present-day Boğazköy county, province of Çorum. A French traveller, architect and archaeologist, Charles Texier was the first to discover the ruins at Hattusha in 1834. Researchers following him discovered the open air shrine Yazılıkaya, the Grand Temple, the Big Castle and the surroundings. They performed excavations, found the first cuneiform script tablets, made copies of the Yazılıkaya bas-reliefs. It is only following the discovery of 2500 cuneiform tablets in 1906 that the site was identified as Hattusha. The excavations acquired a new dimension with the involvement of the German Archaeological Institute and the German Oriental Society. An exhaustive topographic map of the area was drawn up. The real breakthrough was achieved when in 1915, Bedrich Horozny succeeded in decoding the Hittite language by decrypting the cuneiform tablets. Secrets brought to light The century-long archaeological work resulted in the progressive discovery of the secrets of the Hittite Empire. The castle situated at the centre of Hattusha, the Grand Temple and various housing components were found in the lower town located at the north of the castle, the upper town established in the southern flank surrounded by thick trunk formed ramparts, the various gates, Royal Gate, Sphinxes Gate (situated at the city’s highest peak), the ”Poterne” (secret castle door, postern) and the Lions Gate which constitute the focus of interest of the visitors. The Sphinx stays in Berlin... The powerful Hattusha Sphinx believed to protect the city from all evil has the face of a human, the body of a lion, and is endowed with wings. The 2.58 meters tall statue was originally standing guard at the right side of the city’s southern gate. In the years 1915 -1917, German archaeologists took the 10.400 cuneiform tablets and the parts of the two sphinxes stemming from the diggings at Boğazköy to Berlin, in order to be cleaned, assembled, restored, and eventually repatriated. One of the sphinxes was returned to Turkey in 1924, also a number of tablets were sent back to İstanbul in batches from 1924 to1942. Unfortunately, the second sphinx was not returned to its homeland, but kept in Berlin and put on display at the Pergamon Museum. The longing comes to an end A struggle which has been going on for almost one hundred years... A sort of marathon race... Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertuğrul Günay is happy to be the one to cross the finish line. Proud to announce the return to Turkey of the Boğazköy (Hattusha) Sphinx, “a great longing comes to an end”, says Minister Günay. He characterizes his feelings as a “great satisfaction”. He states that, in compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding on the return of the Boğazköy Sphinx, signed with the German side at the end of the bilateral meeting held in Berlin on 13 May 2011, a group of Turkish experts was sent to Berlin end of May to review, with the assistance of their colleagues from the Pergamon Museum, the technical circumstances under which the Sphinx would be removed from its Hattuşa Örenyeri Aslanlı Kapı sfenksleri. Hattusha Archaeological Site Lions’ Gate Sphinxes. GUARDIANS OF TREASURE In mythology, sphinxes are known to be guardians of treasure who have the ability to metamorphose into any creature’s body. They are generally depicted as lion-bodied, sometimes endowed with wings and a snake’s tail. • The Egyptian sphinx is a legendary antique creature. It has the body of a lion lying on the ground and the head of a pharaoh. Lions were considered holy by the Ancient Egyptians due to their link to the sun. • The only sphinx in Greek mythology is a devil representing destruction and bad luck. It has the head of a woman, the body of a winged lion or, looks like a woman who has the paws, fingernails and breasts of a lion, the tail of a snake and the wings of a bird. • The sphinxes with the head of a human and the body of a lion are mostly found as statues in the Hittite, Lydian and Phrygian civilizations in Anatolia. Their gender is undetermined. They are depicted seated or walking on vases and seals or stamps. Four sphinx statues were discovered at the Boğazköy historical site. One of them is in İstanbul, the second one still in Berlin for the time being and the two others continue their eternal guard at Hattusha’s entrance. current place and prepared for the transport. The Minister of Culture and Tourism declares further: “According to our agreement with the German side, the Boğazköy Sphinx should be made ready to be placed on display at the Museum of Çorum until the date of 28 November 2011. However, we are currently in the process of making arrangements to bring it back earlier, possibly during the course of the month of July.” Concerning the 10.400 Hittite cuneiform tablets from Boğazköy sent to Germany to be repaired, he emphasizes that 3.000 of those tablets were returned to Turkey between 1924 and 1942, while the remaining roughly 7.400 of them were recovered in 1987 and are currently under protection at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. Anatolian artefacts abroad The Minister: “We persist in our efforts to ensure the recovery of the Anatolian artefacts taken out of the country. We achieved significant progress in the negotiations concerning the restitution of the upper half of the Tired Heracles statue, currently at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and whose lower half is at the Antalya Archaeological Museum. Further negotiations, concerning the Samsat (Samosata) stele at the British Museum in London, the ceramic tiled panel stemming from the Tomb of Ottoman Sultan Selim II at the Louvre Museum in Paris are being pursued. Moreover, we continue our efforts to establish the whereabouts of many different pieces which were taken out of the country. Considering that the restitution of the Boğazköy Sphinx took more than 90 years, we must realize that intensive work is required to achieve the return of the country’s cultural property. We must persevere on a permanent national policy concerning this issue.” Underlining that, on the other hand, the preservation and displaying of historical artefacts at their original geographical locations is necessary for in-depth scientific research, the Minister affirms: “It is necessary to keep and display cultural property at their place of origin in order to be able to effectuate an adequate scientific evaluation and analysis on the subject matter. A single object, separated from its natural and cultural environment, on display somewhere in some collection is irrelevant from a scientific point of view. A scientific work on it can only be performed by being aware of its origin, by seeing exactly where it belongs to, from which cultural background and layer it is stemming and by being able to evaluate its place within the historical process. This approach is shared by the majority of scholars around the world. Controversial World Heritage The Pergamon Museum is the last museum constructed (in 1930) at Berlin’s Museum Island (Museumsinsel), which in 1999 was inscribed on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Last but not least, Pergamon Museum, visited by 850,000 people every year, is the most popular within that complex of museums which is hosting yearly around three million visitors. The museum is subdivided into the Antiquity Collection, the Middle East Museum, and the Museum of Islamic art. The Pergamon houses original-sized, reconstructed monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Zeus Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate, The Mshatta façade, along with invaluable pieces from the Sumerian, Assyrian and Persian civilizations. The museum is drawing the world’s attention certainly due to its rich collection. However, there is controversy over the legitimacy of the acquisition of the collection consisting mainly of pieces stemming from excavations in Turkey; in particular the treasures from Bergama and Millet. Turkey, the original country of the excavations, demands from the German government the repatriation of the collection to its homeland. Abdülhamit’in ‘cömertliği’ olmasa bu müze hiçbir zaman kurulamazmış. Bunun müzeyi ziyaret eden hemen herkesin ortak düşüncesi olduğunu, iyi niyetli bir müze yetkilisinin size yaklaşıp, ‘Hoş geldiniz, burası sizin vatan toprağınız sayılır’ demesinden de anlıyorsunuz. Evet, Pergamon Müzesi, Manisa, Didim, Priene, Boğazköy’den toplanıp getirilen eserlerle kurulmuş... Bergama’dan Pergamon’a… The Pergamon Museum in Berlin is number one museum in the world which Turks love to visit; however with mixed feelings, rather with bittersweet emotions. As soon as you cross the threshold of the entrance to the museum, you find yourself in the familiar atmosphere of a typical Aegean historical site. The magnificent Zeus Altar, of which only the foundations are left behind at its original site at present-day Bergama (ancient Pergamum or Pergamon), bedazzles your eyes in all its splendour at the Pergamon Museum as you enter the main hall. In your soul, the feeling of joy and satisfaction at the completion, in front of your eyes, of an image which remained incomplete until that moment, conflicts with the sorrow of 130 years of longing. Subsequently, you see the entranceway to the Athena Temple, the Athena statue, the Market Gate of Miletus, and further most valuable objects and structures re-assembled and erected in original size, but standing there looking sad away from home... Without the persistent interest of German archaeologists for the Anatolian civilizations, their excavations at historical sites in Turkey and the “generosity” of Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamit II, this museum would never have come to exist. You understand that everyone visiting the museum realizes that fact, especially when a well-intentioned museum’s official welcomes you by saying, “You are here on home ground, feel yourself at home”. Indeed, the Pergamon Museum’s inventory is composed of artefacts stemming from Manisa (Magnesia), Didim (Didyma), Priene, Boğazköy (Hattusha) and other historical sites of our geography. From Bergama to Pergamon The initial story of the museum’s establishment starts actually in Bergama. While supervising the building of roads in the Aydın area in the years 1864-1865, the German civil engineer Carl Humann who was also interested in archaeology comes across a few fragments of friezes around the hills of Bergama and decides to undertake some exploratory digging. The unearthed articles draw the attention of Alexander Conze, the director of antique sculpture at the Berlin Museum. Carl Humann is pursuing his excavations between the years 1878-1886 thanks to the backing and financial support he is receiving from Berlin and uncovers eventually components of the frieze, relief panels and sculptures of the famous Zeus Altar. He is allowed, by special permit of Sultan Abdülhamit II to bring to Berlin the fragments of the Altar. He proceeds by carefully disassembling and drawing up an itemized and numbered list of the discovered pieces which he sends to Berlin at successive intervals in separate shipments until the year 1886. Mules and camels are used to carry the various pieces downhill from the acropolis, ox carriages to bring them from there to the port of Çandarlı (ancient Pitane) from where they are transported on small ships to the port İzmir (ancient Smyrna) to be loaded there onto larger vessels, German Navy ships, taking them to the North Sea. And finally, they are transported via railroad from North Sea ports to Berlin. The journey which lasts nearly ten years ends up in Berlin’s Altes (Old) Museum. However the magnificent Zeus Altar cannot be adequately displayed at the overfilled Altes Museum. It is decided to erect a new purpose-built museum for the Altar. However, the installation of the Zeus Altar at the current Pergamon Museum building takes until 1930, due to different plans, phases and delays in the construction. From Pergamon to Russia... When the Pergamon Museum is severely damaged during the bombings of Berlin which take place towards the end of World War II, it becomes necessary to find solutions to protect the art treasures. Pieces of the altar are stored in an air-raid shelter, walls are erected around some big monumental objects difficult 15 Pergamon Müzesi’ne taşınan ‘İştar Kapısı’ görkemli yapısı ve muhteşem süslemeleriyle göz alıyor. The magnificent Ishtar Gate with its colourful decorations, Pergamon Museum, Berlin. 16 to transport elsewhere. But none of these measures are adequate to preserve these antique treasures uprooted from their lands of origin. When the Russian Red Army occupies East Berlin in 1945, the exodus resumes. The ancient works of art are taken to the Soviet Union as war trophies or supposedly to be protected from looting. They are stored in the depot of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad (currently St. Petersburg) until 1958. In 1959 a large part of the collection is returned to East Germany (GDR), friend and ally of the Soviet Union, including the altar fragments. Many other antiquities remain in Russia, at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow as well as at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Following the re-unification of Germany in 1990, the Pergamon Museum which remained within the borders of East-Berlin for many decades, becomes an important centre of attraction for the visitors from the West. To summarize, priceless antique treasures were taken away from Ottomans by Germans and by Russians from Germans. Germany is demanding their restitution from Russia, and Turkey demands their return to their homeland Anatolia, from both, Germany and Russia. The treasures at the Pergamon Museum hope that their days of exile will eventually come to an end. Who knows, maybe they will also have a chance to return home one day like the Boğazköy Sphinx... BİR ZAFER ANITIDIR ZEUS SUNAĞI Bir zamanlar Antik Bergama’nın akropolünde bulunan Helenistik dönemin en görkemli sunağı, Pergamon Kralı II. Eumenes’in, Seleukos Kralı III. THE ZEUS ALTAR IS A MONUMENT OF VICTORY The Zeus Altar, the most magnificent monumental construction of the Hellenistic period, was built during the reign of King Eumenes II in the first half of the 2nd century BC on one of the terraces of the acropolis of the ancient city of Pergamon, to immortalize Pergamon’s triumphs over the Celtic Galatians and the Seleucid King Antiochos III. The Altar was dedicated to Zeus, the King of gods and his war and wisdom goddess, his daughter Athena. The marble structure is erected on a five-stepped base-plate and consists of two levels. The frieze in high relief surrounding the “U” shaped podium depicts the battle between the Giants and the Olympian gods known as the Gigantomachy. • The reliefs are like a parade of the gods of mythology: Zeus with his thunderbolts, Artemis with her hunter arrows, Poseidon, god of the seas, goddess of beauty and love Aphrodite challenging the giants, and Leto, Apollo, Dione, Orthos, Alkyoneus, Porphyrion. • The 1.20 meters high reliefs reflect the opposite characteristics of gods and giants. The bearded, snake legged or winged, wild and aggressive giants fighting with rocks and primitive rods in their hands, as opposed to gods combating the giants with their bows and arrows, their axes, lions, tigers and dogs. The victorious gods symbolize the people of Pergamon, the losing giants represent the Galatians. • The giants are crushed by the powerful gods, their bodies torn apart, agonizing in terrible pain. Though created by a number of different famous sculptors from Pergamon, the coherence of the whole frieze, the harmonious artistic unity of the reliefs and their consistency down to the level of details are remarkable. • The frieze is considered the masterpiece of the Pergamene school of sculpture marked by emotional and dramatic intensity and characterizing a particular period of the Hellenistic art of sculpture. There is a second, smaller and less well preserved high relief frieze of a more traditional style on the inner court walls which surround the actual fire altar on the upper level of the structure at the top of the stairs. It depicts, in a series of consecutive scenes, events from the life of Telephos, legendary founder of the city of Pergamon and son of the hero Heracles and Auge, a daughter of the Tegean king Aleus. 17 18 BİR YÖRE BİR ANTİK KENT One Region One Ancient City Yazı-Text Fügen Yıldırım Fotoğraflar-Photos Rasim Konyar bergama büyüleyici etkisi Eski bir dünya kenti ’nın tapınakları, tiyatroları, sarayları, kütüphanesi, su kanalları, şifa merkezi ve şehircilik anlayışıyla, binlerce yıl sonra bile hayranlık duyacağınız bir ilk çağ kenti bergama… bu yaşlı kentin kalıntıları arasında dolaşırken yalnızca tarihe tanıklık etmiyor, aynı zamanda bilimin, uygarlığın ve bilgeliğin izlerine de rastlıyorsunuz. What comes next is a journey through a fascinating and magnificent world taking you thousands of years back in time. The city of Pergamon was built on a high hill. The name Pergamon, meaning “high castle” is thought to be connected with the ancient Luwian language adjective “parrai” (Hittite language equivalent; “parku”), meaning “high” in the same vein as being the etymological root of a number of other ancient cities across Anatolia. According to some sources, the first settlements in the area go back to 3000 BC. At an altitude of 300 meters, the old town can be reached by road or by the controversial cable car today. The old Pergamon is looking down on modern day Bergama Pergamon is the perfect example of a city planning concept integrating the urban structures harmoniously into the topographic environment. Starting its development from the centre situated on top of a hill, the city expanded its geographic area down the slopes towards the bottom of the hill. Looking down and around standing at the acropolis, one recognizes the well-matched layout of the buildings within a coherent unity as well as the careful insertion of the whole into the natural setting. In fact, old Pergamon is now looking down on present-day Bergama. The palaces of the royal family and the mansions of city notables as well as the temples are located on the highest peak. However, those palaces of which we can only see the foundations today seem to have been unpretentious buildings. The rooms were lined up around a central columned courtyard. Only ruins survived from the houses believed to have been residences of the city’s high-level officials. The five parallel structures in the vicinity served as warehouses for food, grains and as military arsenal. The uppermost monument at the acropolis was the Zeus Altar of which only the stepped base is left behind. This splendid antique treasure was taken away and carried to Berlin in thousand pieces by the German excavation team. Unfortunately the only way of seeing it today is to visit the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. The Athena Temple dedicated to the goddess of wisdom and war Athena was believed to Traian Tapınağı’ndan günümüze kalan sütunlar eşsiz taş işçilikleriyle dikkat çekiyor. Corinthian column headers of the Traian Temple, masterwork of stone carving, Bergama, Turkey. parçalar halinde Berlin’e götürülmüş. It shared the same fate as the Zeus Altar, its constituent parts being taken to Berlin and re-assembled and re-constructed there in original size at the Pergamon Museum. Pergamene calfskin instead of Papyrus Pergamon’s Royal Library built during the reign of King Eumenes II, situated near the Athena Temple on the Acropolis (the ancient Library of Pergamum) was the second best in the antique world. First among equals was the famous Library of Alexandria in Egypt. A competition existed between the two cities. When the reputation of the richness of the Pergamum Library reached Alexandria, the supposedly jealous Ptolemies stopped exporting papyrus. Since the mother of invention is necessity, the Pergamenes invented a new substance to use in codices, called Pergaminus or Membrana Pergamena (parchment) after the name of the city. This was made of fine calfskin, a predecessor of vellum. The library at Pergamum was believed to contain 200,000 volumes which Marcus Antonius later gave as a wedding present to Cleopatra, known for her passion for the Alexandria Library. But this invaluable treasure was later destroyed in a fire. The antique city had five theatres The Theatre of Pergamon, constructed in the 3rd century BC, on the hill slope west of the Athena Temple is one of the steepest theatres in the world. It has 80 rows of seats and a capacity of 10,000 people. One of the oldest settlements in the history of civilizations, Pergamon, present-day Bergama, is known as the place where many “firsts” in the history of mankind originated from: • First parchment (pergaminus) made of fine calfskin. • First Asian library with 200 thousand books. • First great healing centre Asclepieion. • First use of psychotherapeutic methods. • First application of psychodrama. • Beginning of medical treatment through genuine methods such as music, theatre, exercise, mudpacks, sunbathing. • First steps in pharmacology by using potions and herbs. • First use of the emblem of medicine with the snake figure. • First urban planning legislation. • First municipal stores and markets legislation. 21 wooden stage was removable. One of the most magnificent monuments of the Hellenistic period, the multi-purpose structure was used, besides theatre representations, as a forum to discuss municipal issues, or the venue of various activities and social entertainment events. The amphitheatre continues, in all its splendour, to watch over the plain from its summit, as it has been doing for centuries. In reality, the city was equipped with a total of five theatres, two in the Upper Acropolis, one in Asclepieion and two more at the Roman settlement situated between the Acropolis and Asclepieion. The Traian Temple built over the Hellenistic theatre on the highest peak of the Acropolis still seems to protect the city from all evil today, at it has been doing for past centuries. The Temple, dedicated to Roman Emperor Trajan who was divinized by the Romans, is adorned with marvellous marble columns with Corinthian column headers. Centre of art, philosophy and science On the territories previously inhabited by Lydians, Persians and Greeks, flourished Pergamon, which became the most eminent center of culture of the Hellenistic period for 150 years. Pergamon was a small settlement during the Archaic Period. After the death of Alexander the Great, one of his generals called Lysimachos who had become the sovereign of Anatolia after 301 BC, chose Pergamon as the depository for his war expenditures treasury. He delivered that amount of 9000 talents (1 talent is believed to be US$ 7,500 approx.), to Philetarios who was his lieutenant and commander of Pergamon. After the death of Lysimachos, Philetarios used this wealth to found an independent kingdom which later became the center of Hellenistic civilization under the dynasty of the Attalid Kings. With the success of the two kings Attalos I and Eumenes II, Pergamon reached the highest point of its power. The city expanded rapidly, its acropolis adorned with refined architectural splendours. Pergamon became one of the most graceful cities of the antique world, Traian Tapınağı kalıntıları. Ruins of the Traian Temple. 22 Müzede sergilenen zırhlı torso heykellerinden biri. TÜM ZAMANLARA TANIK BERGAMA ARKEOLOJİ MÜZESİ 1936’da hizmete giren Bergama Müzesi’nde, çoğu Bergama ve çevresinde yapılan kazılardan çıkmış eserleri ve Pergamon’a ait buluntuların hayranlık uyandıran örneklerini görmek mümkün olabiliyor. Ziyaretçilerini değişik dönemlere ait birçok eserle buluşturan müze içinde, cilalıtaş, bronz, arkaik, klasik, Helenistik, Roma ve Bizans dönemlerinden örnekler sergilenirken, müzenin bahçe ve avlusunda onları lahitler, steller, sütun başlıkları, yazıtlar, arşıtrav parçaları, kabartma ve heykellerle selamlıyor. Dönemlerinin sosyal ve kültürel yaşamlarına dair önemli ipuçları veren bu eserler arasında çevreden derlenmiş buluntular da var. Bunları eski tunç dönemine ait seramik eşyalar, arkaik döneme ait Pitane (Çandarlı) çanak çömlekleri, Mirina (Yeni Şakran) heykelleri, genç Helenistik döneme ait Akropol tunç heykelleri olarak sıralamak mümkün. Tarihi öneme sahip ünlü kişileri bugüne taşıyan yontular da bulunuyor müzede. Euripides’in, Sokrates’in, Antistenes’in, Xenophon’un portreleri, Vespasianus’un başı, Hadrianus yontusu, Karacalla’nın başı ve Roma imparatorları, yaşadıkları dönemi yansıtan ihtişamları ile bugün bile bizleri etkilemeye devam ediyor. Mitolojik öyküleriyle her daim turistlerin ilgisini çeken yapıtlar da var. Aşk ve güzellik tanrıçası Afrodit’in oğlu Eros’u temsil eden Gülen Çocuk, bakanların taş kesildiği Medusa’nın resmedildiği ‘Medusa Mozaik’i bunlar arasında sayılabilir. Ve tabii Bergama Akropol’ü üzerinde bulunan Zeus Sunağı’nın maketini de unutmamak gerekir. Müzenin arkeolojik eserler bölümünde yer alan bu maket, şimşeklerin efendisi Zeus’a saygı duruşu gibi adeta. Bölgenin halı, kilim, kumaş dokuma örneklerinin, el işlemelerinin yer aldığı Etnografya Bölümü ise, zengin ve seçkin yelpazesiyle ziyaretçilerini zevkli bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor. WITNESS OF ALL TIMES THE BERGAMA MUSEUM Inaugurated in 1936, the Bergama Museum houses mainly objects uncovered during excavations performed in the Bergama area and vicinity and particularly marvellous vestiges unearthed from the ruins of Pergamon. The Neolithic and Bronze Ages, as well as the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods are also well represented in this museum. Its courtyard welcomes you with sarcophaguses, steles, column headers, inscribed tablets, architrave parts, reliefs and statues. Among those artefacts revealing significant details concerning the social and cultural life of their period are articles randomly collected from neighbouring areas. Those are ceramic items, (2550-2000 BC), various Archaic Age pottery articles stemming from Pitane (Çandarlı), Mirina (Yeni Şakran) statues (2nd -1st centuries BC), early Hellenistic period’s bronze Acropolis statues (2nd -1st centuries BC). Sculptures of historical personalities, such as portraits of Euripides, Socrates, Antisthenes, Xenophon, bust of Vespasianus, statue of Hadrianus, head of Caracalla and other Roman emperors’ sculptures continue to reflect the pomp and glory of the times in which they lived. The smiling child, probably representing Aphrodite’s child Eros, the Medusa mosaic are mythological figures of great interest for the visitors of the museum. Last but not least, the miniaturized model of the Zeus Altar, once the pinnacle of Pergamon’s acropolis, which seems to pay respect to the lord of the thunderbolts, constitutes yet another noteworthy item on display at the archaeological department of the Bergama Museum. The Department of Ethnography presenting a great variety of hand-woven rugs, carpets, handicrafts, draperies is inviting the visitor on an interesting journey through the traditional arts and crafts of the region. Birkaç kez Yunan işgaline uğrayan Bergama, en son 1922 yılında işgalden kurtarıldı. besides growing into an intellectual center of art and philosophy. As part of an ingenious city planning, water supply systems were set up by installing kilometres of clay and lead water pipes, bringing water up to the top of the hill. Municipal legislation was introduced, regulating everyday’s life in town, establishing rules for the supply and distribution of water. With its library, its temples, its famous sculpture school and statues and its famous health center, Pergamon became the Hellenistic period’s most important and developed center of culture and trade. Eventually, King Attalos III who succeeded Attalos II, handed his land over to the Romans when he died without a heir in 133 BC, in order to prevent a civil war, and the kingdom of Pergamon became a Roman province under the name of Asia. The city of Pergamum, however, continued to flourish and prosper under the Roman dominion and remained the centre of jurisdiction for the district, and of commerce, as all the main-roads of Western Asia converged there. It was still a big city in the IInd century AD. With the division of the Roman Empire in 395 AD, following centuries of fights for the throne, poverty, pest and earthquakes, started the Byzantine period of Pergamum. Under the Byzantine emperors the greatness and prosperity of the city declined. Nonetheless, it played a certain role during the expansion of Christianity, as part of the Archdiocese of Ephesus. In 716, it was destroyed following Arab invasion. In the 14th century, Bergama was captured by the Beylik (Lordship) of Karesioğulları affiliated with the Anatolian Seljuk State, finally became part of the Ottoman Empire after 1345. In modern times, Bergama was liberated from Greek invasion in 1922. Zeus Sunağı kalıntıları. Zeus Altar’s pedestal. 24 ASKLEPION’a ÖLÜM GİRMEDİ! Zeus’un oğlu Tanrı Apollon, Koronis’i görmüş ve aşık olmuştu. Artemis, onları öldürdükten sonra, cesetlerini yaktırırken, Apollon gelmiş, Koronis’i alevler içinden kurtararak, bebeğini Koronis’in karnından çıkartmıştı. Asklepios, hekimliği Khrion adlı yarı insan yarı at olan Kentauros’dan öğrendi. Asklepion’a gelen hastalar, bugün Viran Kapı adıyla anılan giriş kapısında karşılanır, ilk tedavileri hemen orada yapıldıktan sonra, iyi olabileceklerse içeriye alınırlarmış. Apollo, son of Zeus, fell in love with Coronis at first sight. But, when she was pregnant with his son, Coronis committed adultery with a man named Iskhys. Apollo learned of this betrayal and commanded his sister Artemis to destroy her. The goddess slew her with her deadly arrows. But the god, feeling a pang of regret, rescued the child Asclepios from the womb of Coronis as she was burning on the pyre. Apollo carried the baby to the centaur Cheiron who raised Asclepios and instructed him in the art of medicine. Initiated to the secrets of the art of healing, Asclepios was able to cure even deadly diseases. This ability angered Hades, King of the Underworld, the god of death and the dead. Hades complained to his brother Zeus that Asclepios’s ability to save the dying and revive the dead amounted to an unlawful filching of souls from his domain, the Underworld. By resurrecting the dead Asclepios was stealing Hades’s subjects, thus transgressing divine law and order. When finally Asclepios revived Hippolytos whom Zeus had killed, he was punished by his grand-father Zeus who struck him down with a lightning bolt. Apollo was very upset about his son’s death, but unable to go against his father Zeus, he took his revenge by killing the Cyclops, who had fashioned the bolt for Zeus. Following this act, Apollo was sentenced to serve one year of hard labour among humans as punishment. From mythology to Asclepieion Asclepieion was Pergamon’s healing centre dedicated to the hero of the above myth, Asclepios, the god of medicine. It served as a famous centre of cure and therapy for many centuries, where significant initial steps were taken in medical fields such as surgery, psychiatry and pharmacology. The patients coming to Asclepieion were met at the entrance gate where they received a first treatment, and they were accepted inside only if judged curable following this first examination. Expecting mothers and patients with severe diseases were declined the entry. The reason for this ban is probably explained by the motto inscribed on Asclepieion’s entry: “Death shall not enter here, at this holy place, by the augustness of all gods’!” Those accepted went inside walking through the long sacred way, drank from the healing water which is still potable today, washed themselves with water from the sacred spring and took a sunbath before the beginning of their treatment. The underground passageway was not only protecting patients from adverse climatic conditions, but also served as venue for specific treatments based on light, darkness and sound. Asclepieion was known for developing special treatment techniques including psychological besides physical methods. People came to the Asclepieion for “holistic” treatment that included recreation, sports, exercise, physical work, fasting, late-night runs in the nude, mudpacks, cold and hot baths, potions, herbs. The first methods of psychotherapy were initiated, patients being treated with hypnosis, sleep therapy, verbal suggestion, music, theatre, psychodrama, meditation, dream interpretation etc. Hippocrates, Calos, Antipos, Galenos, Nikamedes, Flavius, Hermokrates, Claudius are among the famous asclepiads who contributed to the reputation of the Asclepieion of Pergamum and laid solid foundations in the art of medical treatment by introducing various therapeutic methods which continue to be used in modern medicine. Listed buildings and historical mansions in various cities and towns around Turkey enjoy a special legal protection status. They mostly serve as venues for archaeological and/or ethnographic museums. One of such buildings is the former Kostaki Mansion in Trabzon which was built as a private residence between 1898 and 1913 for Kostaki Teophylaktos, a notable banker of Greek origin. The architect was Italian and many materials used in the building were brought from Italy. However, the name of the architect is unknown. As Kostaki Teophylaktos, after having lived for only four years in this sumptuous house, went bankrupt in 1917, all his properties were confiscated, among them his mansion. The building was acquired by the Nemlioğlu family. During the time span of Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923), the mansion was used as military headquarters. In 1924, it was prepared for the first visit of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, to Trabzon. Between September 15-17, Atatürk and the First Lady Latife stayed in the mansion. In 1927, the building was nationalized and served until 1931 as the Governor’s House. From 1931 to 1937, it was used as the inspector’s office. Assigned in 1937 to the Ministry of National Education, it was used for fifty years as a vocational high school for girls. Finally, in 1987, the building was handed over to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to be transformed into a museum. Following the fifteen-year renovation work (1987-2001), the recreated building was inaugurated as the Trabzon Museum with its archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions on April 22, 2001. Terrace section covered with a glass roof (left) and an inside section of the Main Hall, Kostaki Mansion. Exquisite hand-drawn decorations With all its floors, except for the basement, being decorated with hand-drawn designs and its 1500 square metres size, the building still remains to be among the most beautiful examples of civil architecture. The architecture and decorations used in this building reflect the 150-year-old Baroque/ Rococo tradition of Europe that became popular when the Ottoman Empire was slowly abandoning its own artistic and architectural characteristics. The unique use of these styles, which were preferred by palace architects, makes this mansion the only outstanding example of its kind in the city of Trabzon. The elevated entrance gate reached through marble stairs, an overall asymmetrical structure brought into balance through an octagonal tower with a conic dome, the dynamic diversity of the various roofs, rosecoloured stone blocks decorating the façade are among remarkable characteristics of the building. The Tyke - the goddess, protector of the cities - statue welcomes the visitor at the entrance of the front garden adorned with huge trees offering a marvellous getaway from Trabzon’s busy and crowded city centre. The basement of the building is designed as the archaeological display hall. The first floor is re-organized as the ethnographic section. The ground floor holds splendid hand-drawn decorations reflecting the era’s lifestyle. Each room has different thematic decorations according to its function. The fish and bread scenes together with wine bottles decorate the ceiling of the dining room. The splendid ceiling decoration of the entertainment hall with the zodiac, the medallions around the centre of the ceiling with Zeus and Hermes’s figures are really masterpieces. The art-nouveau style handcrafts displayed on the glass frames with angel, woman and bird figures in the centre of the entertainment hall, the artwork placed in the medallions depicting Venus, Eros and Trabzon city views are worth seeing. The current set of furniture in the Kostaki Mansion is not composed of the family’s original belongings. Nevertheless, they reflect the authentic style of the past century and were either specially purchased by the Trabzon Museum or donated to it. The archaeological display hall has a chronological arrangement and includes four separate sections, starting from the Early Bronze Age up to the Ottoman period. Among the items on display take place terra cotta and glass objects, ancient coins, Byzantine icons and Ottoman articles of daily use. 33 Binanın çatısında yükselen kubbesi, ana kapısı ve arkeoloji bölümü olarak kullanınan bodrum katı (üstte). A MAGIC TOUCH AT THE HAGIA SOPHIA NOT ONLY A HISTORICAL LANDMARK, BUT A GENUINE LEGEND... THE HAGIA SOPHIA (TURKISH AYASOFYA), ADMIRED BY KINGS AND SULTANS FOR 1500 YEARS, NOWADAYS CONTINUES TO WELCOME PRESIDENTS AND PRIME MINISTERS. THIS SPLENDID MONUMENT BEYOND COMPARE HAS NOW RETURNED TO ITS PERIOD OF YOUTH THANKS TO A RELENTLESS RESTORATION EFFORT. THE DIRECTOR OF THE MUSEUM, ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. A. HALUK DURSUN TELLS US ABOUT THIS LABOUR OF LOVE WHICH CONTINUED FOR 17 YEARS. 37 Rivayete göre, Ayasofya’nın inşası bittiğinde İmparator Justinianos “Geçtim seni Süleyman” diye bağırmış. Papa 16. Benedict ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Başkanı Barack Obama’nın ziyaretlerinin ardından Ayasofya’nın Restorasyon çalışmalarının ardından ortaya çıkartılan ‘Serafim’, melek yüzü. Seraphim angel face uncovered thanks to restoration work. 38 Rumour has it that Emperor Justinianus has rejoiced at the completion of the Hagia Sophia by exclaiming: “I prevailed over you Solomon!” Meant was the fabulous Temple of Solomon, destroyed 586 B.C. by the Babylonians... Not a single artefact was found which could be related to the Temple with certainty during the various excavations conducted at its supposed emplacement at Mount Temple in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, Solomon’s Temple remained a powerful legend up until our days. Justinianus realized his own dream by having the great Hagia Sophia erected as a challenge to that legend. Then, the Hagia Sophia remained as the unique sovereign at the pinnacle of architectural achievements until Ottoman Architect Sinan built the Süleymaniye Mosque. The Hagia Sophia, built between 532 and 537 A.D, is an incomparable monument for all followers of the Byzantine heritage and for the world’s cultural history. Translated into the English language Hagia Sophia means “holy wisdom”. The basilica was a point of attraction for all civilizations of its era. Kings, emperors, sultans, they were all dreaming of entering through the porch of Hagia Sophia as victorious sovereigns following their conquest of Constantinople. Eventually, it was the fate of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror, to turn this dream into reality. He conquered the city in 1453, putting an end to the Eastern Roman Empire and the Hagia Sophia was transformed into the Ayasofya Mosque, as landmark of this great victory. The legendary monument is nowadays a museum witnessing to its glorious past. The restoration work which lasted 17 years came finally to an end. The scaffolding disturbing the view inside the building is gone, the original mosaics were cleaned and repaired. An angel face on one of the domes overlaid with stucco for many years has been uncovered. The sultans’ tombs in the courtyard were opened to the public, the renovated baptistery and the recently unearthed “baptismal font” provoked great interest in international art circles. The Children’s School situated in the courtyard of Hagia Sophia was revitalized after centuries. The Director of the Museum Haluk Dursun and his young and dynamic team are the ones who put their signature under all these efforts. Haluk Dursun, who initiated a new era at the Ayasofya, one of the pinnacles of world cultural heritage, answered our questions. MÜZE DERGİ: What is the daily average number of visitors at the Hagia Sophia Museum? Which days of the week are the busiest? HALUK DURSUN: The busiest day is Tuesday, because of the fact that the Topkapı Palace Museum is closed on those weekdays. Thus, all tourists visiting İstanbul are rushing to the Hagia Sophia on Tuesdays. A minimum of 10 thousand foreign guests are coming to our museum every Tuesday. On week-ends, we rather welcome domestic tourists. There are even days where the number of visitors is exceeding 15 thousand. The museum personnel are used to taking on great crowds. MÜZE DERGİ: The Hagia Sophia takes certainly place on the itinerary of foreign dignitaries on State or official visits to Turkey. Who were these VIP’s in recent years? HALUK DURSUN: There is practically no foreign statesman leaving İstanbul without having been to the 39 ‘protokoler müze’ olduğu fikri iyice oturdu. Hagia Sophia’s awe inspiring monumental structure. 40 Hagia Sophia. This building is a landmark guarding marks from both the Eastern Roman and Ottoman Empires. The protocol visits last approximately 20 to 40 minutes, during which we seek to communicate a cultural message. Following the visits of Pope Benedict XVI and President Barack Obama, the idea of the Hagia Sophia being the standard protocol museum has established itself. Prince Charles, the spouse of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Ms. Asma Assad are among those dignitaries who devote a special interest to our museum. They occasionally effectuate private visits here and it is my duty and honour to present to them during such visits, in-depth information on their area of special interest. The subjects vary from mysticism to architecture or the genuine “culture of death” which is embodied in this sanctuary. MÜZE DERGİ: Would you please dwell upon the significant changes which occurred during your tenure here as Director? HALUK DURSUN: The office and restroom structures in the courtyard were obstructing the way and the view to the sultans’ tombs, built by the great Ottoman Architect Sinan. I attributed great importance to having these unfitting dwellings removed and re-built in an adequate fashion at a more appropriate Müzenin ziyaretçilerine kapılarını kapattığı saatlerde oturup sessizliği dinlediğini dile getiren Haluk Dursun, “Ben Ayasofya’ya gönlümü açtım, o da bana sırlarını açıyor” diyor. Padişah Türbeleri Müze Başkanı Haluk Dursun, ziyaretçi akınına uğrayan ‘Padişah Türbeleri Bölümü’nü, ‘Ölüm Kültürü Müzesi’ olarak adlandırıyor. Dursun, “Bu bölüm ölüm ve ölüm sonrasının nasıl güzelleştirilebildiğini göstermek açısından son derece önemli. İnsanların atalarının mezarlarını görmesini ve onların ölüm kavramına nasıl yaklaştıklarını göstermek istedik.” diyor. Bu bölümde Sultan II. Selim, Sultan III. Murat, Sultan III. Selim’in türbesi görüyor. Tombs of Sultans Museum Director Haluk Dursun calls the Department of the Sultans’ Tombs, the Museum of the Culture of Death. “This department has its own meaning in the sense that it shows how the human culture is able to beautify death and the notion of after death”, he says. “We wanted people to see the tombs of their ancestors and to understand their approach to death.” The tombs of Sultan Selim II, Sultan Murat III, Sultan Mehmet III and other members of the Ottoman dynasty are situated in that department. The tomb of Sultan Selim II built in 1577 by Mimar (Architect) Sinan, decorated with tiled epigraphs and panels is drawing the greatest interest. The mother-of-pearl inlays, the calligraphies and the hand-drawn decorations are considered masterpieces of their period. Scaffoldings were removed from inside the Hagia Sophia after 17 years of restoration work. The magnificent building is re-juvenated in all its splendour. location, we even added a baby changing room to it. We are grateful to TÜRSAB for their assistance in this matter. Secondly, we completed the restoration of the dome. The entire dome has been lead sealed and humidity measures were taken. The tesserae, the mosaics covering a total area of 19 thousand square metres were cleaned and solidified through special millimetric injections. Thanks to the completion of the restoration work begun 17 years ago, we were finally able to remove those scaffoldings spoiling the inside appearance of the Hagia Sophia. MÜZE DERGİ: You received an award concerning a specific mosaic which was unveiled during the restorations. What is the particular significance of that mosaic? HALUK DURSUN: Indeed, we unveiled a genuinely important mosaic during the restoration of the dome. The Swiss-italian architect brothers Gaspare and Guiseppe Fossati who carried out some restoration work at the Hagia Sophia during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid had covered the face of the “Seraphim Angel” mosaic featuring a sixwinged cherub figure. This mosaic was recently cleaned to reveal the face of the angel Seraphim which had been covered for about 160 years. The Hagia Sophia was chosen as European Museum of the Year for 2010 thanks to the comprehensive restoration work. Furthermore, I was presented with Italy’s prestigious “Rotondi Award” (Premio Rotondi 2010 ai Salvatori dell’Arte) in a ceremony held in Sassocorvaro city in central Italy on September 25, 2010. 44 Facts on Hagia Sophia • The largest church of all churches built in İstanbul by the Eastern Roman Empire, the Hagia Sophia was re-built three times following various disasters. The coronation ceremonies of Byzantine Emperors were held in this basilica. • The first two buildings were destroyed as a consequence of religious and political unrest. The stairs at the ceremonial main gate and the column supports are the only remaining elements from the second church. • The current structure is the third church designed by two eminent architects of their time, Isodoros from Miletos (Milet) and Anthemios from Tralles (Aydın) who were commissioned by Emperor Justinianus. The construction was completed in the relatively short period of 5 years and the basilica inaugurated with much ceremonial pomp on 27 December 537. The domes added to the otherwise traditional basilica architecture constituted a genuine architectural revolution. • The total surface area of the various domes and cupolas is amounting to19 thousand square metres. • In addition to various types of marble originating from Anatolia as well as Northern Africa, columns of the Temple of Artemis (Artemission) were brought from Ephesus and used in the construction of the third church. • The great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan is considered as one of the world’s first earthquake engineers for having extensively strengthened the Hagia Sophia, showing signs of fatigue, through the construction of lateral support buttresses (structural side supports), during the reign of Sultan Selim II (1566-1577). • Some restoration work was carried out under the supervision of the Swiss-Italian Gaspare and Guiseppe Fossati brothers during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid. A Sultan’s gallery (imperial box) framed with gilded balustrades was set up on the left side of the mihrab (altar). 8 gigantic circular-framed disks or medallions with a diameter of 7.5 meters each, adorned with calligraphic inscriptions by calligrapher Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi and considered masterpiece samples of the Islamic art of calligraphy were hung on the columns of the main hall. The 35th Verse of the Sura an-Nur (Sura of the Heavenly Light) was inscribed on the centre of the main dome. • The building was finally transformed into a museum in 1935 upon instructions of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, by a decree of the Council of Ministers. The Ayasofya Museum was inaugurated on 1st February 1935, visited since then by millions of domestic and foreign guests. now consecrated to the Hagia Sophia at the Rotondi Centre for the Saviours of Art. The “Rotondi Award” is presented to individuals or institutions making contributions to cultural heritage every year since 1996. MÜZE DERGİ: Which sections of the museum were opened to the public which could not be visited before? HALUK DURSUN: It became urgent to make new areas available to the public, to assure a smooth flow of visitor crowds peaking at 15 thousand people at times. We opened the “Sultans’ Tombs Department” where the tombs of Sultan Selim II, Sultan Murat III and Sultan Mehmet III are located. These tombs were designed by Architect Sinan and other eminent architects of the 15th and 16th centuries. They are decorated inside with calligraphies, ceramics, motherof-pearl, and metal engravings. This department can be visited free of charge. The baptistery was restored to its original state. Hagia Sophia’s Byzantine baptistery building had been turned into an Ottoman sultans’ tomb, and the sixth-century baptismal font in it was moved to the baptistery’s courtyard. The sultans who were buried in the tomb were those who had been dethroned. When Sultan Mustafa I and Sultan Ibrahim were buried there, the baptistery turned into a sultans’ tomb and the baptismal font in it was moved to the court without being damaged. It remained under the soil. This court is a very beautiful section showing Byzantine art. Olive oil was used in baptism ceremonies in Byzantine Orthodox culture. Historical olive oil cubes and sarcophaguses were also unearthed in the court. As part of the restoration work in 2010, the baptistery’s courtyard was restored and the baptismal font was unearthed. This font was used in mass baptism ceremonies. The baptismal font is 3.32 meters long, 2.52 meters wide and 1.16 meters deep. It is the world’s oldies and largest baptismal font. Its discovery aroused great interest in international art circles. MÜZE DERGİ: Greater emphasis was placed on the Islamic period of the building through the opening to the public of the Sultans’ Tombs. Did this contribute to a shift in the museum’s image or to a diversification of the visitors’ profile? HALUK DURSUN: World’s largest Greek-Orthodox baptismal font as well as the largest Moslem ritual ablutions’ fountain built by the Ottomans are both here. One can admire here the imperial mosaics as well as the “Çinili Türbe”- the Tiled Tomb, a masterpiece by the greatest Ottoman Architect Sinan. Yes, the Hagia Sophia was originally built as a Byzantine basilica, but very valuable Islamic cultural elements were added to its decoration over the centuries, some giant calligraphies personally manufactured by sultans, priceless mother-of-pearl inlays, hand-drawn decorations etc. Indeed, the emphasis on the Islamic aspects of our museum paved the way to an increase in the number of devout Moslem visitors, those elderly people who take a rest in our roses, hyacinth and lilac gardens after their visit at the museum. CARESSING ARCHAEOLOGY WHAT IS ARCHAEOLOGY? WOULD THE GENERAL DEFINITION BE “SCIENCE OF THE OLD”? IF SO, CINEMATOGRAPHY IS COMPLETING SCIENCE BY TAKING US THOUSANDS OF YEARS BACK IN TIME AND THUS BUILDING AN EMOTIONAL BRIDGE WITH THE PAST. Diyelim ki Yeşilçam’ın 48 The human being stands on its two feet. But has no language yet. Has no tool beyond a simple piece of rock. Has no shelter. Walks around in nature dressed in an animal skin. Eats what it finds and finds itself running in pursuit of fire that it discovered accidentally and lost again. The action takes place 80 thousand years ago. French film director Jean-Jacques Annaud made such a film in 1981. Entitled “Quest for Fire”, the film was definitely not a commercial blockbuster. But it was met with great enthusiasm in academic circles, in Turkey and around the world. It became the subject of seminars and theses at universities. The film’s quality was lying in the fact that it created an impression of authenticity and accuracy. Everything looked like we would truly come across such human beings if we were beamed back 80 thousand years in a time-machine. The secret of this impression of authenticity lies in the in-depth historical research and emotional digging performed by the film director. After all, thanks to archaeology and anthropology, we possess some clues on life forms at the age of the discovery of fire. Annaud was equipped with that knowledge, but certainly added his own artistic interpretation to it. Whereas, in turn, emotional digging is a totally different story! Think about it, we are referring to primitive humans who do not possess a language yet. Albeit renowned writer Anthony Burgess created a language based on some types of growling, muttering and interjections having specific meanings; it is hard to watch a film without words and dialogues! This is the secret of Annaud’s success. In an environment where it is difficult to distinguish between man and woman, where both are equally repulsive and dirty, walking around growling like apes, he was able to embed a love story in a convincing manner. What is archaeology? Would the general definition be “science of the ancient”? In this case, cinematography is completing science by taking us thousands of years back in time, thus stimulating curiosity and building an emotional bridge to the past. “Quest for Fire” is the best example of its genre, but there are other films provoking interest for archaeology in younger generations. Though very few of them are as concerned for scientific accuracy as Jean-Jacques Annaud’s “Quest for Fire”, movies such as the “Indiana Jones” series and recent movies with mummies and pyramids have nevertheless the merit of instigating curiosity for the past of mankind. From “Hittites” to the “Kara Murat” (Murat the Black) Another, better known movie by Jean-Jacques Annaud is The Name of the Rose he directed in 1986, a film adaptation of Italian writer Umberto Eco’s popular novel of the same name. The film won many awards. Jean-Jacques Annaud spent four years preparing for the film, travelling throughout the United States as well as Europe, searching for the perfect cast and film set locations, concerned among other with finding the most befitting monastery to reflect the medieval atmosphere. He spent time on finding answers to the questions:‘What kind of lighting was used, what kind of candles and oil-lamps? In which way the oil-lamps were staining the walls?’ ‘In which way were the clothes tailored?’ ‘What did they eat? What did they not eat?’ Imagine one moment that monks are eating a meal including tomatoes by using forks in a 13th century monastery! Stop there! Firstly, impossible for forks to take place on that table. Secondly, Christophe Colomb did not yet discover America and, therefore, tomatoes did not yet reach Europe and could possibly not be part of a meal in that monastery. Understandably, we cannot expect each film director, each screenwriter to be as meticulous as Jean-Jacques Annaud. For instance, if we start finding all the discrepancies in some popular movies who claim to be historical films such as Kara Murat series (Murat the Black, Turkish popular historical vulgarization films), the film would end before starting. But still, we have to admit that they serve a purpose, like the ones with mummies and pyramids, in inspiring interest for history. Anyhow, these old popular series are yet a thing of the past. As a matter of fact, nowadays, dramatic and well-prepared documentary films such as the “Hittites” by Turkish film author Tolga Örnek shed light on the history of our geography. The civilization of the Hittites created one of the most glorious cultures which flourished on Anatolian soil, in 1600 BC. The film is able to give us insight into the history of the Hittites, their life-style and culture in a concrete manner, among other, thanks to the exciting progress achieved in the last century by archaeology. Is there anyone who went to visit the ‹stanbul Museums of Archaeology after seeing the film “Hittites”, who learned something about the meaning of the works of art they left behind, who realized the contributions of the Hittites to our region and to the world? Does reading a book or seeing a film change your life in one day? Who knows? Maybe not! But certain is that it will add a particular dimension to your life. The archives, the storage rooms are full of books and films waiting to be cleaned off of their dust. For instance, “2001: A Space Odyssey” is one such legendary “cult” science-fiction film made in 1968. The first scene starts with a dramatic apparition: a neatly cut and polished black monolith in the midst of a crowd of primates. Are those perhaps Annaud’s first humans? Who knows, maybe the man, in the film “Quest for Fire”, caressing the swollen womb of the pregnant female creature standing next to him”, is sending a message to the present day: “ A new life will be born from here. That life will lead to further lives... Further lives will lead to future lives... Who cares if we do not have words! Will your men not caress the pregnant wombs of their women with the same feeling of bliss?” 50 İSTANBUL ARKEOLOJİ MÜZELERİ İstanbul Archaeological Museums Yazı-Text Sevinç Akyazılı Fatih’in ‘Sırça Saray’ı: Çinili Köşk Müzesi YÜZYILLARDIR SOLMAYAN MAVİ... 52 Where to start really? Should we begin with the date of inauguration 120 years ago of the İstanbul Archaeological Museum on 13 June 1891? Or should we go further back and remember the time of Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror? These questions suffice to show what a historical journey the Tiled Pavilion went through. Their answers contain such details which are not only worth reading but also inspire you to go and visit the “Glass Palace”. The Tiled Pavilion Museum... The museum is not only a treasure of art due to the 900 years old tiles and ceramics on display inside, but also due to the graceful and refined decoration of the building. The Tiled Pavilion is one of the first buildings constructed in İstanbul by orders of Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror. The structure, nowadays part of the İstanbul Museums of Archaeology, was built in 1472 in the Sarayburnu (the Seraglio Point) woods within the ramparts of the Topkapı Palace. It is considered a fine example of an early Ottoman civilian building inspired by Seljukian architectural style built in İstanbul. It is composed of a main dome based on cross vaults and further domed sections at its four corners. A colonnade arcade on 14 columns is adorning its front. The fame of the pavilion stems rather from its tiles than the construction’s technical characteristics. Covered with uniquely coloured navy blue, golden yellow, blue and white tiles, the pavilion was given the name of “Glass Palace” by the people of ‹stanbul. Also called “Kasr-ı Kâşi” (meaning also ‘Tiled Pavilion’ in old Ottoman language with reference to the city of Kâsh, a tiles producing centre in Iran), was used as the “Müze-i Hümayun”, the Imperial Museum between 1875-1891. During the years following the foundation (1923) of the Republic of Turkey, the building served as part of the Topkapı Palace Museum. Finally, in 1981, it was decided to include the Tiled Pavilion Museum within the compound of the Archaeological Museum, among other, due to its physical proximity to the main building of that mu- DESEN CENNETİ Çinili Köşk Müzesi, pek fazla tanınmayan Çanakkale işi eserlere de ev sahipliği yapıyor. Murad’ı ve günümüzde müzeyi ziyaret eden sanat tutkunlarını değil, Müze-i Hümayun’a hayat veren Osman Hamdi Bey’i de büyülemiş. The Life Water Fountain (left page). Samples from the collection of the Tiled Pavilion Museum (on the right). A HEAVEN OF PATTERNS The Tiled Pavilion Museum is housing also the less well-known Çanakkale (Hellespont) ceramics consisting mainly of dishes manufactured from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, adorned with ship, pavilion and mosque designs, plant patterns, animal figures. The rich diversity of animal figures is surprising, because even giraffes which never set foot on Anatolian soil are depicted on ceramic dishes, reflecting the rich design perception of the Çanakkale region. In addition to the great variety of designs, the Çanakkale ceramics are also drawing attention through their original shapes. There are, for instance, chicken shaped jugs and pitchers with a twisted handle in the form of a turban, in the Çanakkale ceramics collection of the museum. The museum which is even worth visiting for its building only, presents the historic evolution of the Seljukian and Ottoman art in a pleasant setting. The daily life of the Anatolian people opens out the gates of imagination. seum. The Tiled Pavilion Museum is housing today over two thousand tiles and ceramic works of art. The Seljuk and Ottoman tiles and ceramics dating from the 11th century up to the first period of the 20th century are on display in 6 different halls of the museum. The blue which did not fade for 500 years One of the most interesting pieces of the museum where tiles and ceramics produced in İznik, Kütahya and Çanakkale are displayed, is the ‘Tiled Altar’, the “Çinili Mihrab”, (mihrab:niche in a mosque wall indicating the direction of Mecca). The altar is a fine example of 15th century Ottoman art of tiles manufactured with a special coloured glazing technique. Composed of tile plates ornamented with plant and geometric patterns inscribed with verses from the Bakara Sure of the Holy Quran (the second and longest chapter of the Quran composed of 286 verses: Surah al-Baqarah). Adorned with the most exquisite samples of calligraphy in “naksh” and “cufic” styles, the altar looks like a sea of tiles bustling with golden yellow and white waves. Golden yellow Another interesting piece of the museum is the “Life Water Fountain”, the “Ab-ı Hayat Çeşmesi”. A niche dismounted from one of the rooms of the building was transformed into a tiered, ornamental fountain. The peacock figures surrounded by plant designs on the fountain’s slab are the particular feature of this magnificent piece of art. The fountain with its golden hand-drawn designs, with the 12 verses poetry written in “ta’liq hat”, (the old Islamic calligraphy style known as the Nasta’liq script) on its two flanks, is considered a masterpiece of the 15th -16th centuries’ art of tile-making. According to its inscriptions, the fountain was created in 1590 during the reign of Sultan Murat III. The fountain Çinili Köşk Müzesi dış görünümü (sol sayfa üst). En ince ayrıntılarına kadar ustalıkla resmedilen figürler, her an canlanıp hareket edecekmiş gibi görünüyor. was also admired by the founder of the Imperial Museum (later Archaeological Museum), Osman Hamdi Bey, who had had photographed himself in front of it and made an oil painting of this photo in 1904 and gave it the name Ab-ı Hayat, (Life Water). In 2004, that painting of Osman Hamdi Bey was placed in the niche directly facing the Life Water Fountain. The Tiled Pavilion Museum is home, besides the above-mentioned masterpieces, to a great number of pieces in smaller size. The collection of Seljuk period tiles is an important part of the museum... The 12th century tiles are known from the Seljuk period, which use the Minai technique. The technique involved the usage of seven colours, with blue, green and turquoise applied on an underglaze and fired. Other colours such as yellow, red, white, black and sometimes gold were then applied on top of this, constituting the overglaze and re-fired at a lower temperature. The 13th century tiles made with the ‘underglaze’ technique and decorated with animal figures and star designs originate from the Kubadabad Palace excavations in Konya. The coral red The world famous İznik tiles from the 14th- 16th centuries are also on display at the museum. The dishes, the water mugs, the carafes and the oil lamps used in mosques, ornamented with hadiths and verses of the Quran, fabricated from the end of the 15th century until the beginning of the 16th century are the most precious items of this collection. However, the most impressive particularity of this section lies in the special pieces on which the ‘coral red’ colour was applied masterfully. Those are the work of masters collaborating with the Nakkaşhane, (the painting workshop inside the Ottoman Court). Those masters, as distinct from traditional tile masters, reached the peak of their art by way of applying the bright coral red colour on slightly relieved designs under a transparent glaze. Their products consist mainly of dishes, calices, oil lamps, stoups, spandrels, overhead panels. The Kütahya green The tile and ceramic industries of Kütahya (ancient Kotyaion) have long traditions, going back to the times of the ancient Anatolian Phrygian civilization. Kütahya is famous for its kiln products, such as tiles and pottery, which are glazed and multicoloured. The Kütahya collection of the museum include items fabricated from the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century such as pitchers, coffee cups, cup holders, mugs, closed vessels, dishes decorated with women figures dressed in local, regional folk costumes, inkpots, and decorative balls ornamented with angel figures. Green, orange, turquoise, blue, dark blue, red and yellow coloured ceramics are decorated with human and animal figures depicted in great detail and a vivid manner. 55 ÖZEL MÜZELER Private Museums Yazı-Text Sevinç Akyazılı 56 istanbul’un kalbindeki müze: PERA 2005 yılında kapılarını sanatseverlere açan pera müzesi, 6 yılda 700 bin ziyaretçiyi ağırlamakla kalmadı, ülkenin unutulmuş kültür-sanat miraslarının hak ettiği yeri bulmasına da yardımcı oldu. A MUSEUM AT THE HEART OF İSTANBUL: PERA THE PERA MUSEUM HAS WELCOMED 700 THOUSAND GUESTS IN 6 YEARS, SINCE ITS INAUGURATION IN 2005. THIS WELL-DESERVED INTEREST IS TO BE EXPLAINED, AMONG OTHER, BY THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN BRINGING TO THE BROAD DAYLIGHT MANY ASPECTS AND COMPONENTS OF OUR CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC HERITAGE WHICH HAD BEEN NEGLECTED BEFORE. 57 zel müzelerin sayısı ve o müzelerin koleksiyonları, bir ülkenin sanatsal zenginliği açısından en önemli kriterlerdendir. 58 The number of private museums and the quality of their collections constitute one important litmus test when it comes to evaluate the artistic substance of a country. The Pera Museum, through the creation of which Suna Kıraç realized her dream, is indeed a “private art museum and gallery” which greatly contributed to that substance. Speaking of the Pera Museum, the “Tortoise Trainer”, a very valuable painting painted in 1906 by the founder of the İstanbul Museum of Archaeology, Osman Hamdi Bey, is the preeminent work of art one associates with the museum. The painter himself comes alive in and through this famous painting which expresses a sarcastic innuendo, depicting Osman Hamdi Bey as an Ottoman intellectual in oriental outfit but with his face turned to the west, who worries about the slow (tortoise) pace of progress achieved in that direction, thus symbolically evoking the connotations of the word “Pera”. Although this painting is the major work of art on display at the Pera Museum, the curators do not wish the other pieces of their museum to be totally overshadowed by the Tortoise Trainer. Özalp Birol, the Director General of the Suna Kıraç Foundation for Cultural and Artistic Ventures explains this apprehension in following words: “We never wished our museum’s renown to be confined to solely the Kıraç Collections and the Tortoise Trainer. This is why we placed that painting at an adequate space where it belonged to thematically within the coherence of the curatorial concept of the first exhibition we organized here. Various people wondered why this masterpiece was displayed like just another painting. Later, as the public became more aware of the Pera Museum and the wide scope of its collections, we finally decided to display that magnificent painting at the place of honour where it really belongs to.” Not to be categorized under the name of only one painting, even if it is a major masterpiece, is an understandable concern when we consider the vast array of their art collections including the collections of the Kıraç couple. The museum created by Suna and İnan Kıraç in order to present to the public the works of art they have been collecting since the 1980’s is now six years old. The former Bristol Hotel, constructed 1893 in Tepebaşı, 1893’de Mimar Achille Manoussos tarafından yapılan eski Bristol Hotel’e ait binada hizmet veriyor. Müzede sergilenen parçaların üzerinde, döneminin günlük yaşamını anlatan kadın ve erkek figürleri, halk öyküleri hatta burayı ziyaret eden yabancıların anlattığı öyküler bile can bulmuş. Permanent collection of Anatolian Weights and Measures (on the left). Orientalist painting collection (above). Beyoğlu by architect Achille Manoussos serves as venue to their Pera Museum. The five storey museum exhibits three permanent collections, Anatolian Weights and Measures, Kütahya tiles and ceramics, and Orientalist Painting. In addition to exhibits, the Museum realizes an extensive contribution to Turkey’s cultural and artistic life by hosting a broad range of cultural events, both at national and international level. To mention particularly in this framework are the special exhibitions devoted to the works of contemporaneous young artists, and special thematic or individual exhibitions. Art’s message! The Orientalist painting collection is one the most important cultural heritage components the museum has to offer to the public’s eye... The Orientalist collection consists of more than three hundred paintings, including works by European artists inspired by the Ottoman world from the 17th to the early 19th century, depicting scenes of Ottoman daily life, portraits, panoramic İstanbul landscapes. Naturally, the “Tortoise Trainer”, the work of Osman Hamdi Bey, who has been characterized as the genre’s only “native Orientalist” is of special significance to that collection. The presence at the Pera Museum, of the Kütahya tiles and ceramics collection presenting a great variety and quality is evidence to the fact that these products from Kütahya, formerly somewhat neglected by art connoisseurs, were sufficiently “rich to form an art collection”. Thus, the labour of love undertaken by Suna and İnan Kıraç paved the way for certain elements of our cultural legacy to obtain their true value. While the İznik tiles, traditionally very highly priced at international art markets kept getting more and more expensive, the Kütahya tiles and ceramics remained underestimated for a long period. However, the purchase of the Kütahya tile and ceramic items by the Pera Museum, provoked an increased interest in the world for these products originally manufactured as house utensils between the 18th and the 20th centuries, and led to a sudden, tripled and even quadrupled hike in their prices at world markets. A story in each corner The pieces on display at this part of the museum present great interest as much from the point of view of their refined workmanship as from the point of view of their symbolic contents. Male and female figures telling the story of their era’s daily life, popular tales, even stories narrated by foreign visitors are revitalized as decoration on these pieces. Another interesting aspect of this section is that it shows the parallelism and differences between the Orthodox masters and their Moslem apprentices from an artistic point of view. On display side by side are two dishes, one decorated by an Orthodox artist with cherubic figures, the other manufactured by a Moslem apprentice who could possibly not draw a cherub’s face on his dish due to his religious 59 Benzersiz bir koleksiyon Müzenin önemli koleksiyonlarından bir diğeri de, ‘Anadolu Ölçü ve Tartı Aletleri Koleksiyonu’. But, he adorned four corners of the dish with angel wings, interpreting in his own style the art learned from his master; as a result of which Kütahya tiles and ceramics gained a new design. Consequently, the angel wings pattern became a characteristic element of the Kütahya tiles and ceramics craftsmanship. The Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection of the Pera Museum is not only relevant to examining such examples of naive and primitive art, but also to acknowledging the profusion of interesting details demonstrating how originally a branch of handicraft could be transformed into an art form. A unique collection The Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection exhibits in chronological order the weight and measure tools used on Anatolian soil throughout the centuries. Its sole rival is the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England. It contains basalt stone weights from the Late Assyrian period (912-612 BC) and from the Hittites. Even measures designed by the great Ottoman Architect Sinan are found here. The preeminent piece of the collection is the ball of a steelyard designed in the form of a Heracles head, dating from 200 BC. The collection is composed of 10 thousand pieces and offers an exciting opportunity to follow the evolution of art and science. World giants in İstanbul Pera Museum is presenting to the public in ‹stanbul, not only its own collections, but also works of great world artists through special exhibitions. The Picasso, Marc Chagall and Botero exhibitions in 2010, the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Exhibition which started in 2010 and lasted until March this year and which attracted over 120 thousand visitors were 60 kuyruklar oluşturan Frida Kahlo ve Diego Rivera buluşması oldu. Director General Birol Özalp tells us that they want the Pera Museum to be remembered through such major projects and explains their objectives: “When planning such grand exhibitions, our intention is to give the Turkish public a chance to become familiar with the works of the great masters, but at the same time, to take this opportunity to see the unique treasures of our permanent collections. Important is to offer to our public the good and the beautiful while contributing to a greater cultural consumption, including increased museum visits, by providing the highest possible service quality within the range of affordable prices. In this year’s last quarter, we will present the Young Art Project prepared by the Eskişehir Anatolian University as well as the valuable art collections of the Turkish Central Bank. Finally we plan to welcome two paintings of Osman Hamdi Bey which are part of the Collection of the University of Pennsylvania (Penn State), and which were not presented to the public in Turkey before. The same exhibition will also include the writings, drawings and ephemera of American scholars who took part in archaeological research on Ottoman territories.” Pera Museum is only six years old but already often mentioned in international art publications. It offers the Turkish people direct access to art treasures they believe to be as remote as the stars. THE TORTOISE TRAINER The most interesting piece of the Pera Museum is undoubtedly the Tortoise Trainer painting by Osman Hamdi Bey. This masterpiece dated 1906 is well-known to the Turkish public, not only due to its artistic value but also because of the fact that it had to go through an adventurous transactions process in the 2000’s. Transferred to the Savings Deposits Insurance Fund from the private collection of Erol Aksoy’s Bank of Economy, the painting was purchased for the record sum of 5 million Turkish Pounds (approximately 3.5 million US dollars) by the Pera Museum in December 2004. The 222 x 112 cm painting is not only drawing attention through its harmonious use of colours, its refined details, its depth perspective and the masterly well-adjusted distribution of light and shadow, but also due to its symbolic criticism of bureaucracy. Analysts suggest that a sarcastic innuendo is expressed through the composition of the figures. According to historian of the art Professor Dr. Zeynep İnankur, Osman Hamdi Bey depicted himself as a “Tortoise Trainer” in oriental garments, but turning his face to the west. He is holding two instruments in his hands; a nakkare, a small kettledrum used in mehter music and a ney, nay, a reed flute often used to play Mevlevi music. On the floor are turtles representing the slow-motion bureaucrats obstructing creativity and/or reforms... The trainer’s efforts to educate the turtles through art, represented here by music, seems to prove a struggle in vain, because the turtles do not perceive the rythm of the drum due to their thick tortoiseshell and are not able to hear the nay because they do not possess ears. But the “Trainer” continues to strive and does not give up his education effort against all odds. 61 bir Elli yıllık arkeoloji öyküsü HACILAR türk arkeolojisi’nin birçok bilinmeyenini gün ışığına çıkarmış olan prof. dr. refik duru’nun yeni kitabı bizleri elli yıl öncesine götürüyor. eser, kuruluktan uzak, her kesimden insanın merakla okuyacağı bir roman niteliğinde. REFIK DURU, WHO UNCOVERED THE MYSTERIES OF VARIOUS ARCHAEOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES IN TURKEY, TAKES US ON AN EXCITING JOURNEY FIFTY YEARS BACK IN TIME. THE BOOK IS FAR FROM A TEDIOUS SCIENTIFIC ACCOUNT AND HAS THE TASTE OF AN EXCITING NOVEL WHICH CAN BE READ WITH INTEREST BY PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. Hacılar, the first settlement to reveal the existence of remains from the Neolithic Age (8000-5000 BC) in Anatolia is considered one of the major discoveries in the field of Anatolian archaeology. Hacılar remained on the agenda, not only due to the scientific results obtained but also because of certain events that occurred after the end of the excavations. The book entitled “A Fifty Year Old Archaeological Story HACILAR”, by Prof.Dr. Refik Duru, who has taken part in various excavations in Anatolia since the beginning of the 1950’s, invites us to go on an exciting journey that began fifty years ago. In this book the author presents first, as a conscientious scholar, an extensive report on the archaeological results of the excavations carried out at Hacılar, located near Burdur, by British archaeologist James Mellaart and continues with a different type of report, namely a detective report in which he relates in a detailed and well-documented manner the events that unfolded in Hacılar after the termination of the archaeological work. The book is composed of five sections. In the first section, entitled “The Hacılar Plot”, the writer touches on the story of how Hacılar was originally discovered, and goes on to portray in great detail the chain of events that took place after the end of the excavations. He describes the characteristics of the artefacts found as a result of illicit excavations and of the fake copies of these manufactured by the local villagers, along with the smuggling out of the country and illicit selling of such articles at international ancient art markets. Refik Duru narrates, based on press reports and official documents, how eventually the Government became aware of the situation and decided to intervene. In the second section, the author gives an account of the work conducted under his own leadership with a view to finding the graveyard of the Hacılar settlement. As he learned from the villagers that most of the artefacts obtained from the illicit diggings after the end of the Mellaart excavations came out of graves, he started to believe that if he were to carry out excavations in those areas, he would be able to locate the cemetery of Hacılar and portrays, based on convincing arguments, the particular circumstances of his endeavours. In the third section, Refik Duru draws up a systematic list in chronological order of the artefacts originating primarily from the James Mellaart excavations; pottery, figurines and other artefacts displayed and/or stored at various museums in İstanbul, Ankara and other Turkish cities and towns, by classifying them according to their chronological layer of origin. In the ensuing pages, he composes a further list in which he itemizes the artefacts originating from Hacılar according to their distribution to various museums and private collections at home and abroad. Finally he makes certain observations, based on archaeological criteria, concerning the determination of the authenticity of artefacts and the distinction between authentic and fake objects. In the final section, he offers a global analysis of the results of the archaeological work carried out at Hacılar, as well as of the other dubious aspects of the 50 year old Hacılar story, by examining all the information and the official and non-official data he had gathered. In this way he contributes to the appraisal of some question marks in the minds of the readers concerning the destiny of this very important Anatolian prehistoric settlement. Supplemented with pictures, drawings, newspaper articles and copies of relevant official documents, the book is far from a tedious scientific account, even though it is written in strict compliance with the norms and rules of archaeological science. It would not be an overstatement to say that the Hacılar story has the taste of an exciting novel that can be read with great interest by people from all walks of life. THUS, THEY CONSTITUTED THE MAIN LOAD OF COMMERCIAL SHIPS CRUISING IN THE AEGEAN AND THE MEDITERRANEAN TRANSPORTING THESE COMMODITIES FROM COAST TO COAST. THIS IS WHY MARITIME ARCHAEOLOGISTS AND DIVERS DIVING AT OUR COASTS COME ACROSS AMPLE NUMBER OF AMPHORAS IN AND AROUND SUNKEN SHIPS AND THAT AMPHORAS ARE THE ITEMS FOUND IN THE LARGEST NUMBER AT ALMOST EVERY HISTORICAL MUSEUM IN TURKEY. 65 unanlılar’ın ‘Amphoreus’, Romalılar’ın ise ‘Amphora’ olarak kullandığı amfora kelimesi, Yunanca amphi (iki yanda) ve phoreus (taşıyıcı) kelimelerinden oluşuyor. Yani ‘iki kulplu testi’... The word amphora is Latin, derived from the Greek amphoreus, an abbreviation of amphiphoreus, a compound word combining amphi- (“on both sides”, “twain”) plus phoreus (“carrier”), from pherein (“to carry”), referring to the vessel’s two carrying handles on opposite sides. Mainly used for wine, grain and olive oil, they also served as perfect containers for honey, spices, dry fruits, dried fish, fish oil and even for perfumes and scents. Easy to carry held by their handles, most were produced with a pointed base to allow them to be stored in an upright position by being partly embedded in sand or soft ground. This also facilitated transport by ship, where the amphoras were tightly packed together, with ropes passed through their handles to prevent breaking or toppling during a rough sea voyage. In kitchens and shops amphoras could be stored in racks with round holes in them or hung on hooks by their handles. Stoppers of perishable materials which have rarely survived were used to seal the contents. The inside was coated with resin or wax. Commercial ships sailing in the Aegean and the Mediterranean were transporting almost all their commodities in amphoras. Two principal types of amphoras existed: the neck amphora, in which the neck and body meet at a sharp angle; and the one-piece amphora, in which the neck and body form a continuous curve. They were marked with stamps indicating their place of production. The Greek amphoras were painted with various figures on black background, the ones from the Island of Chios were stamped with sphinx figures symbolizing Chios. The amphoras from Cnidus (Knidos) were characterized by their very pointed base and the Cnidus inscription on their handles. The ones from the Island of Kos were decorated with crab figures on their handles. Romans preferred the one-piece amphora, in which the larger neck and the longer body form a continuous curve. Vourla (Urla), Chios Island, Cnidus and Rhodes were the most famous amphoras production centres of the Antique era. There were also further production workshops at the Black Sea coast, namely in the area of present-day Sinop (Sinope) and Karadeniz Ereğlisi (Heraclea Pontica). Although the history of amphoras, simply wheel-thrown terracotta containers, can be traced back to the Bronze Age (from 3300 BC onwards), their golden period corresponds to the development of the Eastern Mediterranean trade routes beginning around 2000 BC, when the amphora becomes an indispensible tool for this maritime commerce. The amphoras brought to the surface from shipwrecks around Turkish coasts by divers, but also those found at various ancient production centres in Anatolia, constitute the largest artefact collections at our museums. THE ‘SWEET’ STORY OF TASTE PEOPLE LIVING THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO ON THIS SOIL PRODUCED FROM GRAPES THE FIRST BEVERAGE OR LIQUOR OF HISTORY. DRIED GRAPES, RAISINS WERE THEIR FIRST SNACK FOOD. BUT FIRST AND FOREMOST, THEY USED GRAPES INSTEAD OF SUGAR, ALONG WITH HONEY WHICH WAS PLAYING THE LEADING PART, UNTIL SUGAR MADE ITS APPARITION! Visiting the archaeological museums, you will have noticed that the grapevine leaves pattern is a very common design found on the most various artefacts of the Antique Age, from all sorts of pottery to sarcophagi. This is certainly not a coincidence. Grapes are amongst the oldest fruits cultivated by mankind. The oldest known vine leave fossil is dated back to 130 million years. The cultivation of that once wild plant by humans started approximately 6 thousand years ago. Archaeological evidence supports the fact that Anatolia and the Caucasus are the homelands of the grapevine. Excavations established that vine cultivation existed already 3500 BC in Anatolia, with around one thousand different sorts of grapes and a vast variety of derived products... An exquisite episode in the history of taste and flavour... Speaking of derived products, we have to understand grape-juice and a slightly fermented grape juice, a sort of wine probably. People living thousands of years ago on this soil produced from grapes the first beverage or liquor of history. Dried grapes, raisins were their first snack food. But first and foremost, they used grapes instead of sugar, along with honey which was playing the leading part, until sugar made its apparition on the stage of our Mediterranean basin’s history. Tables of conquest! The historical journey of taste and flavour is in a sense the history of mankind. Indeed, basic elements of our current cuisine, products ranging from pepper to sugar, from tomatoes to paprika came to be known to our ancestors on the occasion of some military campaigns. The various dishes on the dinner table of Roman emperors constituted a reflection of their domain of sovereignty, the geographic extent of their power. Similarly, multiple food products stemming from all the lands reached by the conquests of the powerful Ottoman Empire were served on silver plates at the dinner tables of the Ottoman Court. Sugar reached the Middle East as a result of the Arab military campaigns in Asia and it was introduced to Europe only following the Crusades. Next time you visit the Archaeological Museums of İstanbul, examine the various objects under the angle of the culture of food. On which marble object or ceramics will you find grapevine leaves... What sort of trophies did the proud war hero represented by that big statue bring back home from his victory? Which new tastes and flavours were added to the dinner table of that king following his military campaigns in foreign lands? Honey playing the leading role In the Antique Age, honey was indeed an indispensable food product. According to available data to us on that era, honey was an ingredient added to almost all food and drinks. Particularly in the meals of wealthy people... Ample details on the luxurious Roman dinner tables, table manners, interesting episodes on extravagant dining styles and refined dishes are provided in a book attributed to the Roman gourmet Marcus Gavius Apicius who presumably lived between 14 BC and 37 AD. A cookbook is also attributed to him, in which are presented succulent recipes apparently enjoyed by Roman emperors and senators, among other the famous pâté de foie gras (duck liver paste) and the grilled flamingo’s tongue of superb flavour. However, the most important notes in the history of taste and flavour concern the first “sweet desserts”. And honey plays the lead in those desserts. Sugar: Trophy of War Honey and sweet grapes would continue their exclusive reign on dinner tables for many centuries to come. The reign of sugar had to wait until sugar’s arrival in the Middle East and from there in Europe, following the Arab invasion of Persian lands in the seventh century starting from 642 AD. The raw material of sugar is sugar cane... Sugar cane’s homeland is India... Sugar cane, in Sanskrit language sarkara and Pali language sakkhara was known in India already 5 thousand years ago. As the Persians finally reached India in 510 BC, they discovered numerous new products ranging from various spices to gems and precious stones. Among these new discoveries, sugar cane was presented to Persian King Darius the Great as the “cane producing honey without the bees”. This was such a precious gift that the Persian court kept it as a secret for centuries, even away from its own people reserving it to the use of the royal palace. Therefore, sugar was not revealed to other civilizations, until the Arab conquest of Persian territories. 69 + Cebinizdeki hazine: Müzekart + TÜRSAB-MTM İŞ ORTAKLIĞI’NIN SON PROJESİ OLAN MÜZEKART+, 300’Ü AŞKIN MÜZEYE ÜCRETSİZ ZİYARET İMKANI SAĞLAMAKLA KALMIYOR, OPERA-BALEDEN TİYATROYA, SERGİLERDEN KAFE RESTORANLARA FİYAT AVANTAJI YARATIYOR.
