This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine. It combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve healthcare diagnosis and treatment. 8 SUB DISCIPLINES WITHIN BME are classified by their association(s) with other more established engineering fields, which can include (at a broad level): Biochemical-BME, based on Chemical engineering - often associated with biochemical, cellular, molecular and tissue engineering, biomaterials, and biotransport. Bioelectrical-BME, based on Electrical engineering and Computer Science - often associated with bioelectrical and neural engineering, bioinstrumentation, biomedical imaging, and medical devices. This also tends to encompass optics and optical engineering - biomedical optics, bioinformatics, imaging and related medical devices. Biomechanical-BME, based on Mechanical engineering often associated with biomechanics, biotransport, medical devices, and modeling of biological systems, like soft tissue mechanics. 07.10.2013 9 BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING? BIOENGINEERING? Bioengineering is a broad term for the general field of engineering materials, devices and systems that interact with biological systems. Biomedical engineering is part of that. Biomedical engineering is about designing, making and delivering medical device technology so that health care providers (e.g. doctors) have the tools to treat people. For example, pacemakers, catheters, imaging systems, diagnostic equipment, stents, artificial hearts, dialysis machines, artificial joints, and vascular grafts are some of the devices that biomedical engineers help produce. A Biomedical degree comprises basic engineering courses plus basic medical courses such as physiology, anatomy, and biocompatibility. Engineering is a great field. Lots of opportunities to branch into related high paying and rewarding jobs even if you don't like pure engineering. Biomedical is particularly good. It is a growth field and is one of the most recession proof areas of the economy. So, biochemistry while related to both would apply to bioengineering the most. Stem cell research would really be more in the fields of cellular biology and immunology. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090102143907AAJ8a1z 07.10.2013 10 CHAMBERS (SHORT COMPARISON) Every engineer in Turkey must join a chamber: Bioengineers Chamber of Chemical Engineers Biomedical Engineers 07.10.2013 Chamber of Electrical Engineers Is it very explanatory? 11 FURTHER READING Bronzino, Joseph D.
