The photobooks which were designed and implemented by the students from cover to cover, will be on view between July 24th and August 28th. Photobooks as an artistic practice among photographers is becoming more and more popular for the last couple of years. Giving another perspective to presenting photographs and easiness of presentation are just a few reasons for this rise. The artist aims to escape the constituent lead of the symbolic order in his works. The ailing and consciousness-deprived figures that he uses are the symbols of a potential pre-rampancy process. With this act he tries to produce unconsciously, rather than exposing an unveiled unconsciousness that already exists. The deformations on the figures and the motions that are repeated in a drifting way are the visual counterparts of a missed encounter with the truth. 10 yukarı above ecstoplasm 6 (2012) mdf üzerine yağlı boya oil on mdf 65 x 120 cm sol left patoloji pathology (2015) mdf üzerine yağlı boya oil on mdf 60 x 40 cm 5.000 tl* 2.000 tl* *belirtilen fiyatlara kdv dahil değildir prices listed above don’t include tax 11 there is place (2015) kağıt üzerine renkli kalemler ve yumuşak pastel coloured pencils and soft pastel on paper 104 x 74 cm açık depo / open space Angelika Vaxevanidou “Kimliğim bana ait değildir.” “My identity does not belong to me.” Bununla ilgili olarak Slavoj Zizek’in “En büyük özgürlük hareketi, özgür seçimlerinin sonuçlarını kabul etmektir,” cümlesini hatırlatıyor bize. As an artist, Vaxevanidou chases an identity isolated from social messages and interpretations, while she tries to reach beyond the human who is formed by space, time, society and other conditions. She reminds us a quote from Slavoj Zizek; “The biggest move of freedom is accepting the results of free choices.” First of all, the artist goes through a process where she tries to understand how to respond to the society she lives in and tries to analyze it. Afterwards, she abandons the rules of society by accepting the consequences of her free choices no matter what they are. 12 4.500 tl* Her works inherently display an environment where she isolates herself from the suppressions of the outside world and the urge to meet its needs. Mixer ArtWriting is a platform which was established 2 years ago to shed light on the current situation of art writing in Turkey. It has gathered people who are interested in art writing and criticism to share and benefit from each other’s experiences and gave the experts on this field the space to share their thoughts and experiences. There have been workshops, talks and exhibition tours in the context of this platform. Also in this context, art criticism books that shed a light on the current state of art writing in Turkey has been published. Mixer Artlab, which is a project started by Mixer in order to create alternative spaces for producing art, aims to make art’s production process more visible and transparent which is shared with the audience not often. Akademisyen olmak üretiminizi nasıl etkiliyor? Işıl Aydemir: How do you evaluate the educational system that you are a part of as an artist and an academic? How does being an academic affect your artistic production? Diğer sorunlar ise tamamen Türkiye’ye özgü sorunlar; bizde okuma ve araştırma yapma alışkanlığı yerleşmemiş, tabii ki bunun da üniversiteden önceki eğitim süreciyle ilişkisi var. Çağrı Saray: Education is a particular area with very particular problems I think that the fine arts faculties and art related departments in private schools that give an education on art in Turkey have serious issues. These problems are based on the inapplicability of the educational models in art education and the insufficiency of the lecturing staff. The other problems are fully peculiar to Turkey; reading and researching habits are unsettled, of course this has its roots in the very educational stages preceding university. Being an academic is not a part-time job, it requires a serious amount of work and complete devotion I guess the previous generation would understand this better than us. I enjoy making projects with 21 them, contribute to their work and experience the research process with them. I think my academic works and research also contributes to me as an artist. Ç.S: My works at “Printed’15” are part of a a series called “Red Room: Sequences”. They are two pieces belonging to a single series of art works based on a cinematical narrative style. The main problem of this series of works that was materialized between 2004-2011 were; deconst- Ç.S: “Kırmızı Oda: Sekanslar” isimli seride kullandığım biçimsel dil, sadece o projeye özgü bir dildi. Sekanslar serisinde ise senaryoyu, yani metni ortadan kaldırıp röportaj / interview Sanatçının Yeldeğirmeni’ndeki atölyesinden bir görünüm A view from the artist’s studio located in Yeldeğirmeni avantaj olduğunu düşünüyorum. I.A: Mixer’de 29 Nisan-16 Haziran 2015 tarihleri arasındaki “Printed’15” sergisinde yer alan “Kırmızı Oda: Sekanslar” isimli çalışmanızdan ve üretim sürecinden biraz bahsedebilir misiniz? Ç.S: “Printed’15” sergisinde yer alan “Kırmızı Oda: Sekanslar” isimli seriye ait çalışmalarım, temel olarak sinemasal anlatı üzerine kurulu olan çok-parçalı bir işin iki parçası. 2004-2011 yılları arasında 22 ructing the cinematical language, and in a way, producing new cinematical forms by separating it to its elements and adding, cutting back the elements. Also, there is a constant expectation towards transforming and breaking the viewer’s habits. The stories in my works I made during this process are related to each other and consisted of scenarios that are sequences of one another. These projects produced with different mediums tell the story of a guy who lost his memory and it’s directly related to concepts like identity and memory at its lower layers. This relation became visible in my further projects for the next couple years. These two ‘sequences’ are produced by holding to the shoots scenarios and are re-made by using an old multiplication technique called screen printing in which the original versions that are digitally manipulated and colored by computer. In this extent, the movement in the paintings come to life by reproducing the digital ones with analogue techniques, in other words producing the works with screen painting, an original printing technique, rather than digital multiplication technique. We can call this technique an analogue production that imitates the digital production. I.A: What are the origins of the style of your language in your personal or artistic history that you preferred to use in your work “Red Room: Sequences”? Ç.S: The style of language was only peculiar to that project. The previous step of this project called “Red Room” consisted of a scenario; we can define it as an underground crime story close to the 90’s aesthetics. On the other hand, in the sequences series, I tried to tell the story only with visuals (37 paintings in total) by removing the scenario and the script and I thought that the most appropriate language would be the kind that is visual and reminds us of the 90’s comics 23 hikayeyi sadece görsellerle (toplam 37 adet resimle) anlatmaya çalıştım ve bunun için en uygun dilin 90’lardaki süper kahraman çizgi romanlarındaki estetiği hatırlatan bir görsel dil olabileceğini düşündüm. Therefore, I tried to draw like a comics illustrator to make a visual wholeness between the shots/sequences. In the next step of the series called “The Lost Room”, I started my drawings with additive lines that only repeat. To sum it up, the forms I used at my work called “Red Room: Sequences” is the foundation of the prints I make today. I.A: On beş yıldır ürettiğiniz eserler arasından seçilmiş yapıtlarınızdan oluşan “Eksilen Zaman” adlı bir sergi gerçekleştirdiniz. Belleklerimizde yer eden deneyimlerin işlerinize aktarımını toplumsal olaylarla beraber değerlendirince hafızanın neleri değiştirdiğini görüyorsunuz? Ç.S: I think ‘memory’ is a misleading concept that can be reconstructed in time, even though my works seem like a dystopia rather than a good fiction of the future. As a matter of fact, the strong bond that the personal memory sets with the communal, memory provides a structure that calls each other and forms each other. As an individual or as a community, marks of every incident we experience are carried to images, objects and spaces and as we experience new things, the meaning of these concepts can change. Of course it’s not a change from the root; it’s a memory that forms by multiplying and sheltering the old within. My series like “Memory Boxes” and “Memory Spaces” at the exhibition “Diminishing Time”, as well as many Ç.S: “Eksilen Zaman” sergisi üzerinden okumak gerekirse; ürettiğim işler her ne kadar iyi bir gelecek kurgusunun tersine distopik diyebileceğimiz işler gibi dursa da, ben yine de ‘hafıza’nın yanıltıcı ve zamanla yeniden inşa edilebilir bir unsur olduğunu düşünüyorum. Bu işlerdeki 24 röportaj / interview I.A: You have made an exhibition called “Diminishing Time” consisting of your selected works produced in the past fifteen years. What do you see in the memory changes when evaluated with communal incidents into your works? I.A: Bundan sonraki projelerinizden biraz bahsedebilir misiniz? The common feeling in these works is related to the fragility of the relationship between the personal and the communal, as well as the way they transform each other. I.A: Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming projects? Ç.S: First of all, we have an upcoming book for the “Diminishing Time”. I also have some things in my mind that I would like to try regarding my works; these are concepts that I would like to work with both by the means of technique and content. But first, I need to do the required research and practice to materialize them. This summer is the time that will be spent for those trials. On the other hand, I have two series of works that I’ve made in previous years that haven’t been exhibited in Turkey yet. I would like to exhibit them in the right time and space. Other than these, along with the group exhibitions in places at the European side, I would like to make some pop-up exhibitions and presentations at the Anatolian side, which is also where I live. 25 röportaj / interview Güneş Bulut Yılmaz Mehmet Kahraman: Öncelikle kendinden biraz bahseder misin? M.K: First of all, can you tell us a bit about yourself? Güneş Bulut Yılmaz: 1983 İstanbul doğumluyum; Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi Sanat ve Tasarım Fakültesi mezunuyum, lisansım ‘disiplinler arası güncel sanat’ alanındaydı; ardından Marmara ve Berlin’de iki boyut (resim) üzerine yoğunlaştım. Yurtiçi ve yurtdışında çeşitli sergilere katıldım, çeşitli koleksiyonlarda çalışmalarım bulunuyor. Güneş Bulut Yılmaz: I was born in Istanbul in 1983. I graduated from Yıldız Techical University, Faculty of Art and Design, Interdisciplinary Contemporary Art Department. Afterwards, I focused on two dimensional art, i.e. painting, at Marmara University and Berlin. I participated in various exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Also, my works are included in different collections. M.K: Gerçekliğin kendisini ters yüz ettiğin portre çalışmalarının çıkış noktası neydi? G.B.Y: Ben biraz üretim geçmişimden bahsedeyim. İlk çalışmalarım sosyopsikoloji temelli ‘Toplumsal Cinsiyet ve Kültür-İktidar’ olmak üzere iki ana başlık altında gelişti; çeşitli güncel medyumları deneyimleme şansım oldu bu dönemde. 26 M.K: What was the starting point of your portrait works where you turn reality itself inside out? G.B.Y: I would like to talk a bit about the past of my production process. My first works developed around two main topics from social psychology; ‘Societal Gender isimsiz VI untitled VI (2015) 32.3 cm x 23.4 cm kağıt üzerine kurşun kalem 27 graphite on paper Sonrasında daha çok iki boyutlu çalışmaya başladığım dönemde yoğunlaştığım ‘portre’ ve devamında gelen ‘vesikalık fotoğraf’ kavramları, aldığım Zeynep Sayın dersleri ve tüm birikimimin üzerine eklenen ontolojik bakışla 2011 sonunda bu portrelere dönüştü. Beklerim… isimsiz V untitled V (2015) 32.3 cm x 23.4 cm kağıt üzerine kurşun kalem graphite on paper 28 and Culture-Hegemony’. I had the chance to experience different mediums at this period of time. Afterwards, the concepts of portrait, which I was focused on when I was working on two dimensional projects, followed by the mug shot concepts turned into these portraits at the end of 2011 with the ontological perspective I gained on top of everything I’ve learned and with the classes I took from Zeynep Sayın. M.K: Apart from your portraits, we had the chance to experience your surreal drawings at different exhibitions. What inspires you during your production process? G.B.Y: Just like every artist, I have a different perspective when I “look” at things; I’m also very intuitional. I constantly collect images, go through and filter books like crazy and absorb them. To some extent, I myself am a hybrid product of this geography containing intertwinement and layers. Both east and west, psychoanalysis and ironically at the same time recklessness… M.K: We can follow your work in different platforms and places since you’re an independent artist. According to you, is independency freedom or disorganization? G.B.Y: Of course it’s freedom and an advantage to be able to reach so many circles; but after some time the flow will leave it in a more specific place. M.K: Are there any exhibitions of yours in the near future? G.B.Y: I will be a part of an exhibition called “Start” at C.A.M Gallery on June 2nd.
