In the briquetting of the sample (0-6.35 mm) which has an average calorific value with high ash and sulphur contents, two important points were considered; a-Mechanical resistance properties of briquettes, b-Decreasing of SO2 emission by sulphur capture during combustion. The briquettes obtained with the combination of 10 % molasses, 15 % lime and 10 % water gave the best results from the view of both mechanical resistance properties and combustible sulphur amount with SO2 emission. However, lime addition affected the combustion properties of briquettes negatively due to attained extraordinary ash values. 1. GİRİŞ 1. INTRODUCTION The energy consumption is increasing day to day with the industrialization. Alternative energy sources such as petroleum, natural gas, water, wind, solar and nuclear energies are insufficient to meet the demand and coal still preserves its importance. For instance, only 3 % of energy consumption of Turkey is obtained from our own petroleum and natural gas resources. On the other hand, Turkey has widespread lignite reserves in many regions. However, these reserves are limited and when the environmental pollution is considered, these deposits require cleaning prior to usage or should be facilitated without contaminating the environment. Owing to this situation, grinding of lignite down to very fine sizes is necessary in most of the cases depending on the petrographic composition of the lignite. Pulverization of lignite into fines (significant amount of fine formation is also caused due to some other factors) may cause losses during transportation and accelerate undesired spontaneous combustion of lignite at the stockpiles. Fine size lignite also results in deficiencies during combustion and Endüstrileşmeyle birlikte enerji ihtiyacı her geçen gün artmaktadır. Linyitlerin ince boyutlara kadar öğütülmesi -ki başka sebeplerden dolayı da ufalanma olmaktadır- taşıma sırasında yada rüzgarlı ortamlarda kayıplara ve stok sahasında kendinden yanmaya sebep olmakla kalmayıp aynı zamanda yanma sırasında ızgara altına yada baca yolu ile atmosfere kaçmasına sebep 9 The Journal of ORE DRESSING ® 2004 environmental pollution by falling through the furnace grate without completely reacting and escaping through the chimneys. One of the most effective methods to prevent losses that were discussed above, is briquetting. In addition, briquetting can increase the calorific value of coal in case of organic binder usage (1). If lime is used as the binding agent, it is known that it reacts with sulfur in coal and decreases the SO2 emission (2). The first patent related with the briquetting process was taken by William Easby in USA. In 1872, clay has been used as a binder (3). Briquetting and researches about briquetting was increased continuously after then and each country performed briquetting researches in conjunction with its own goals. In Türkiye, Saraçoğlu and Gencer (1996) investigated briquetting of Soma and Tunçbilek coals by using different binders. Yıldırım and Özbayoğlu (1997, 1998) applied briquetting with Elbistan and Tunçbilek coals using ammonium nitrohumate as binder. Beker et al. (1998) studied different parameters that were effective on the briquetting of Afşin-Elbistan and Siberian coals. Özbayoğlu et al. (2003) briquetted MerzifonYeniçeltek washery fines and developed a flowsheet for the briquetting of fines in industrial scale. Altun (2002) investigated the factors affecting the briquetting of Dodurga-Alpagut lignite and its combustion characteristics. These are some of the researchers who dealt with briquetting in Turkey, recently. Briquetting was applied in Europe around 150 years ago for utilization of lignite fines in industry. The first briquetting plant was installed in France in the 18th century and other plants were installed then in England and Germany (11). In our country the first briquetting plant was installed in 1936 in Zonguldak. Another considerable plant was installed in 1982 at Vize-Kırklareli. This was followed by Ankara, Erzurum, İstanbul and other cities of Türkiye (12). It is known that petrographic and physical properties, surface chemistry, moisture and size distribution of coal are important in briquetting (11). Hock (1951) investigated the effect of adhesion and cohesion forces on the strength of briquettes. Also, some briquetting studies have been performed without binder usage (14; 15). It was reported that coals having high plasticity and low elasticity can be briquetted without a binder, while briquetting of hard coals like anthracite is more difficult (16; 17; 14). The best theories that discuss the mechanism of briquetting are bitumen, molecular energy and capillary (13; 7; 18). The aim of this research was to evaluate the screen olmaktadır. Genellikle yüksek plastik ve düşük elastik özellik gösteren 10 Volume 7 - Issue 14 undersize (0-18 mm) of Dadağı coals by briquetting 0-6.35 mm fractions to decrease SO2 emission during combustion for higher marketing potential. This was accomplished with the hope that dust and ash of 6.35-18 mm fractions would be decreased while calorific value would be increased. kömürlerin bağlayıcısız briketlenebileceği, aksine Antrasit gibi sert kömürlerin ise briketlenmesinin daha zor olduğu çeşitli araştırmacılar tarafından bildirilmiştir (16; 17; 14). MATERIALS AND METHODS Bu çalışmanın amacı, Dadağı elekaltı (0-18 mm) kömür numunesinin değerlendirilmesi ve pazarda kendine yer bulmasına yönelik olarak 0-6.35mm fraksiyonundaki ince kömür tozlarının briketlenerek yanma sırasında SO2 emisyonu düşürme olanaklarının araştırılmasıdır. Böylece 6.35-18 mm fraksiyonunun toz’u ve kül’ü azalmış, kalori değeri artmış olacaktır. 0-18 mm Dadağı lignite was firstly screened to diverge it into a fine 0-6.35 mm fraction, as well as a relatively coarser fraction of 6.35-18 mm, which constitute 40 % and 60 % by weight of the feed, respectively. The characterization of the stated fractions was done through proximate, calorific value and sulfur analysis. Proximate, calorific value and sulfur analysis were carried out according to ASTM D5142-02a, TSE 2678 and ASTM D3177-89 and D2492-02 standards, respectively. Table 1 shows the proximate analysis results, while the calorific value and sulfur content of the samples were provided in Table 2. Briquetting studies were carried out by using around 90 g samples. Lignite fines mixed with molasses, lime and water were briquetted under a load of 40 kg/cm2 by use of a Soil Test made hydraulic press, to obtain briquettes with 4 cm diameter and 5.5 cm length. Mechanical strength of the briquettes were tested according to the standards provided in Table 3 after drying at 40±5 ºC for 2 days. After the briquettes that satisfy the related standards were obtained, effect of lime addition amount on SO2 emission of the briquettes was investigated. Combustible sulfur and sulfur in ash amount were determined and reaction temperature level and SO2 emission corresponding to the instant of maximum combustion as well as the remaining residue after the reaction were found out. For the combustion experiments, a special combustion chamber developed in METU, Petroleum and Natural Gas Eng. Department was used. Infrared Industries 7712 type continuous gas analyzer was facilitated to control the combustion experiments where the extent of SO2 emission at the level of maximum combustion was measured through a Gow Mac series 550 Thermal Conductivity Detector type gas chromatography instrument, throughout the research. 2. 11 The Journal of ORE DRESSING ® 2004 Table 1 Proximate Analysis of 0-6.35 and 6.35-18 mm fractions of Dadağı Lignite Çizelge 1. The number of drop at which breaking occurs and the number of pieces into which the briquette breaks were used to calculate the drop (impact) resistance index (IRI), using the following formula (19): Briketler 1 m’lik yükseklikten sert ve düz bir zemine parçalanma olana kadar düşürülmüş ve düşme sonucu meydana gelen parça sayısı ve parçalanmanın meydana geldiği düşme sayısı kullanılarak Düşme dayanım indeksi (IRI) Eşitlik (1)’e göre hesaplanmıştır (Richards, 1990): 100 x Number of Drops IRI = Number of Pieces IRI = (1) (1) 2.1.2. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Dadağı lignite is characterized with its moderate calorific value, low moisture, high ash and sulfur contents (Table 1 & 2). Sulfur present in Dadağı lignite is mostly in pyritic and combustible forms. Low organic sulfur content showed that Dadağı lignite may be available to washing applications, but only after a certain extent of investments for the necessary plant. In this respect, combustible sulfur was attempted to be decreased through briquetting with lime addition, since the enterprise exploiting the deposit was of small scale. It was seen that the 6.35-18 mm fraction of Dadağı lignite, which was obtained by screening the 0-18 mm sample through a 6.35 mm screen, was of relatively higher quality (Table 1 & 2). However, the ash and the sulfur contents were still at considerable levels. The 6.35-18 mm fraction can be marketed more easily after the screening process in its dustless form, whereas the 0-6.35 mm fraction is available to briquetting without the need for further crushing. 3.1. Briquetting Studies Molasses was used without trying other types of binders, since the study was an industrial project and molasses, being the waste of sugar production, is the most easily available and the cheapest binding agent widely used and preferred in commercial scale production. It was also reported that molasses addition contributed to the calorific value of the coal briquettes (1). In this respect, molasses addition was varied from 0 to 15 % by weight, while lime and water were added with fixed amounts of 10 % The results related to the mechanical strengths of the briquettes with different molasses contents are given in Table 4. As seen from Table 4, satisfactory drop index could only be obtained with more than 10 % molasses addition. On the contrary, the briquettes provided = Çekme Dayanımı (kg/cm2) = Uygulanan Yük (kg) = Briket çapı (cm) = Briket boyu (cm)’dir. Ancak ekzotermik 13 The Journal of ORE DRESSING ® 2004 sufficient compressive strength values even when only lime and water were added without using molasses (80 kg/briquette). In view of these results, it was seen that, as molasses addition was increased briquettes could withstand to impact shocks more, when dropped. This is due to the fact that, molasses provided elasticity to the produced briquettes related to its composition. However, since the molasses and lime undergo an exothermic reaction when found together (21), the ratio of molasses to lime is very important from the view of compressive strength. As it is seen from Table 4, 15 % molasses addition brought about a reduction in the compressive strength of the briquettes. This fall also indicates that 15 % molasses addition was stochiometrically high and led to the disturbance in the briquette structure. Water resistance of the briquettes was observed to be sufficient in regard to Type 2 standard with 10 % molasses addition, but, due to the stochiometrical reasons as mentioned above, in case of insufficient lime addition with respect to molasses amount, water resistance of the briquettes happened to decrease. In fact, since the coal briquettes are mostly marketed in nylon or water-proof bags, water resistance of the briquettes is the least important index in evaluating the mechanical qualification of the coal briquettes today. This point has also been mentioned in the TS 12055 standard for the coal briquettes marketed in closed nylon packs. bir reaksiyna giren kireç ve melas’ın da birbirlerine göre belirli oranlarda olması briketlerin dayanımları açısından önemlidir (Musson, 1985). Table 4. The Mechanical Strength Values of the Briquettes Çizelge 4. Studies for Decreasing SO2 Emission 3.2. SO2 Emisyonu Düşürme Çalışmaları In this phase of the study, lime addition amount was varied from 5 to 20 % while the water and molasses addition ratios were kept fixed at 10 % by weight, which proved to provide the most favorable mechanical strength conditions for the briquettes. The variations in the total, combustible sulfur contents and the sulfur in ash are shown in Table 5. As the lime content of the briquettes was increased from 0 to 20 %, the combustible sulfur content was successively decreased from 3.43 % to 1.74 %. From a contrary view, the ratio of sulfur remaining in ash after combustion was increased from 0.94 % to 1.76 %, as the lime addition was shifted from 0 to 20 % by weight. This was caused by the reaction of sulfur in coal with lime (CaO) to form CaSO4 instead of Kireç’in olmadığı ortamda % 3.43 olan yanar kükürt, kireç miktarının % 20‘ye çıkarılmasıyla % 1.74’e kadar düşmüştür. Bunun tersi olarak kireçsiz ortamda külde kalan kükürt % 0.94 reduction,. On the other hand, the iken % 20 kireç olduğunda % 1.76’ya çıkmıştır. Çünkü, yanma sırasında kömürdeki kükürt SO2 gazına dönüşmek yerine CaO ile reaksiyona girerek kalsiyum sülfat (CaSO4) şeklinde külde kalmıştır. Yanar ve külde 14 Volume 7 - Issue 14 being emitted as volatile species in the form of SO2. It was also observed that the total sulfur content tended to decrease. This was, eventually a relative decrease, owing to the increase in the lime/coal ratio within the briquette blend. kükürt toplandığında toplam kükürt’ün kireç miktarıyla birlikte azaldığı gözlenmiştir. Söz konusu azalma, karışımdaki kireç/kömür oranının artmasından dolayı kükürt içeriğinin göreceli olarak azalmasından dolayıdır. Table 5 also shows the decreasing trend in the temperature level and the SO2 emission at the point of maximum combustion (reaction), with increase in lime content of the briquettes. Although the detected SO2 emission at the point of maximum combustion is an instantaneous value, it indicates that as the lime content of the briquettes was raised from 0 to 20 %, SO2 emission decreased from 23.88 % down to 4.02 %, corresponding to a 6 folds reduction,. On the other hand, the combustion behavior of the briquettes was adversely affected by the increases in lime addition and the temperature level attained at the point of maximum combustion revealed a decreasing trend. Also, the amount of ash raised up to 64 % (Table 5). As a result, the SO2 emission of Dadağı lignite, which is the major obstacle against its utilization, was extensively reduced with lime. The mechanical strength of briquettes with varying lime contents can be seen in Table 6. As seen from the results in Table 6, lime addition affected the compressive strength of the coal briquettes negatively. Despite the positive influence of lime addition on the Drop Resistance of the briquettes, the tendency of the Drop Index values again proved the importance of lime/molasses ratio. In regard to the results observed in Table 4 & 6, lime/molasses ratio should be around 1 for optimum strength conditions with the briquettes. Although compressive strength and drop resistance values decreased with the raise in lime/molasses ratio, related standards were still satisfied even at the highest lime addition ratio of 20 %. However, high amount of lime addition will not only increase the overall production costs, but also have negative influences on the combustion quality of the coal briquettes, leading to more than 50 % ash amount. Çizelge 6’daki sonuçlardan görüldüğü gibi kireçin, briketlerin kırılma dayanımlarına olumsuz etkisi olmuştur. Düşme Dayanımına olumlu etkisi olmakla birlikte burada da kireç/melas oranının etkili olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Çizelge 4 ile kıyalandığında kireç/melas oranının yaklaşık 1 civarında olması gerektiği görülebilmektedir. Kireç/melas oranının artmasıyla birlikte kırılma ve düşme dayanımları azalmakla birlikte deneylerde kullanılan en yüksek kireç oranında bile (% 20) elde edilen değerler ilgili standardı sağlamaktadır. Ancak kül miktarının % 50 lerden fazla olması kömürün yanma özelliğini olumsuz etkileyeceği gibi (maksimum yanma düşük sıcaklıkta olacak) briket maliyetini de arttıracaktır. Table 5. CONCLUSIONS 4. SONUÇLAR The 0-18 mm Dadağı coal sample has moderate calorific value and high ash and sulfur contents. For the evaluation of the mentioned fraction, firstly fines were removed out of this fraction using a 6.35 mm screen so as to obtain a more marketable 6.35-18 mm fraction, which was found to acquire a higher calorific value as well as lower ash content. Dadağı elekaltı numunesi orta kalori değerine sahip, yüksek kül ve kükürt içerikli bir kömür numunesidir. Dadağı elekaltı (0-18 mm) kömür numunesinin değerlendirilmesine yönelik olarak numunenin 6.35 mm’den elenmesi sonucu tozundan arındırılmış, kalori ve kül içeriği nisbeten iyileştirilmiş ve pazarda daha fazla talep edilen 6.35-18 mm fraksiyonu elde edilmiştir. For the marketing of 0-6.35 mm fraction, briquetting with molasses together with lime addition was applied so as to reduce combustible sulfur content and SO2 emission values as well as to increase the resistance of the briquettes against water. In these studies, 10 % molasses was found as the optimum binder addition ratio. From the view of mechanical strength considerations, the optimum lime amount that should be added to briquettes with 10 % molasses, should also be 10 %. On the other hand, it was found that lime should be added at higher amounts to decrease the combustible sulfur content and SO2 emission of the coal briquettes, where the combustion features of the briquettes were adversely affected. 16 REFERENCES 1.
