Powertrain control for heavy-duty vehicles with optimised emissions TÜBİTAK Proposals should address the following actions: • Optimise the control of powertrains taking into account specific transportation tasks. • Exploit on board information provided by navigation systems (i.e. topography and slopes on the chosen route), emission sensors (On Board Diagnosis/On Board Measuring system), engine, after treatment, transmission, electronics and actuators state . • Integrate with other data such as transport assignment (total weight, vehicle configuration, etc.) and real time traffic and weather conditions. All performance to be validated through a demonstrator GV.6-2015. Powertrain control for heavy-duty vehicles with optimised emissions Expected Impact • The resulting technology should deliver a global optimum for consumption (for both fuel, electric energy and other consumables related to emission control such as urea or ammonia) and noxious emissions on each mission • A reduction of fuel consumption of at least 20% on the same vehicle with conventional control should be demonstrated comparatively • Emissions not exceeding Real Driving Emissions limits set by the established Euro VI procedures. Proposals should address the following actions: • New generation of non-hybrid engines based on existing engine technologies (short term developments): proposals will address the optimal combination of innovative engine and robust aftertreatment technologies as well as modelling and testing to improve the design and control capability. • Future combustion engines for electrified powertrains (longer term developments): new combustion processes, sensing, control and after treatment systems, supported by advanced modelling technologies where needed to allow these engines to meet future ambitious energy and emission targets simultaneously. • Special attention should be given to the assessment and reduction of particle emissions below 23 nm, particularly for direct injection gasoline and diesel engines GV-02-2016.Technologies for low emission light duty powertrains Expected Impact • For future non-hybrid engines, demonstration vehicles incorporating each of the developed new engine technologies will prove, by independent testing, a reduction of World Light Duty Test Procedure (WLTP) CO2 emissions respectively of 5% for diesel and 15% for gasoline, with respect to the best engines on the market in 2015. • For the next generation of combustion engines for electrified power-trains, the innovative engines are expected to support the achievement of long term fleet targets of 50 g/km CO2 on the WLTP by demonstrating a peak thermal conversion efficiency of more than 50%and real driving Euro 6 values with no conformity factor (with particle number emissions measured with a10 nm threshold. • Projects will also support the understanding, measurement and regulation of particle emissions below 23 nm Budget: 5-10 m € Type of Action: Research and Innovation Actions (%100) Dates: Single-Stage (14.01.2016 ) TÜBİTAK GV-03-2016.System and cost optimised hybridisation of road vehicles TÜBİTAK Scope: Development of advanced solutions which reduce both the cost and complexity of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and range extended electric vehicles, and their effective mechanical, thermal and electrical integration into the vehicle. Proposals should address the following actions: • System integration of hybrid powertrains, including plug-in hybrid and range extended electric vehicles. • Identify potential for cost reduction by technical simplification of engine and/or transmission systems and research into lower cost alternatives to electric batteries. • Power-train system optimisation through the re-use of waste heat, advanced control, downsizing of ICEs and novel high temperature electronic components. • Improved after-treatment operation, control of emissions, particularly in case of cold (re)start and optimised use of auxiliary systems. GV-03-2016.System and cost optimised hybridisation of road vehicles Expected Impact • Reduction of cost at system level to a premium when produced at a rate consistent with a 10% market penetration. • Contribution to climate action and sustainable development objectives by improving energy efficiency, resulting in higher fuel economy over the WLTP of 20% in the short to medium term and improvements in electric drive range of more than 25% depending on application and drive cycle duty. • Reduction of combustion engine raw emissions, thereby allowing cost reduction in the exhaust after-treatment system. Demonstration of real driving emissions compliance with a 1.5 compliance factor is mandatory for each developed technology. Budget: 7-10 m € Type of Action: Innovation Actions (%70) Dates: Single-Stage (14.01.2016 ) TÜBİTAK GV-11-2016.Stimulating European research and development for the implementation of future road transport technologies TÜBİTAK Proposals should address the following actions: • Updating of research agendas and roadmaps as developed by the European Technology Platform ERTRAC (European Road Transport Research Advisory Council) and the European Green Vehicle Initiative (EGVI). • Identification of actions to support education, training, standardisation and business models. • Fostering of the links between ERTRAC and the national technology platforms for road transport existing at national level in Europe. • Organisation of dissemination activities for ERTRAC and EGVI. These activities should also target emerging economies within Asia and Latin America. GV-11-2016.Stimulating European research and development for the implementation of future road transport technologies TÜBİTAK Expected Impact • It will contribute to a further harmonisation of research and innovation, and therefore contribute to the European Research Area, in particular also in the view of innovation, as well as to the European strategies for a future transport system. The action will also accelerate time to market of new mobility solutions. In addition, this initiative will contribute to climate action and sustainable development objectives. Budget: 2-2.5 m € Type of Action: Coordination and Support Actions (%100) Dates: Single-Stage (14.01.2016 ) NMBP 09-2016: Affordable weight reduction of high-volume vehicles and components taking into account the entire life-cycle TÜBİTAK Proposals should address the following actions • A holistic, integrated and cost-driven approach should be pursued in order to optimize the use of lightweight materials solutions in all vehicle structures, subsystems and components with the exception of the powertrain • Design should pursue approaches based on both “right material for the right application” and “multi-functional optimization” in order to exploit the lightweight materials properties • Manufacturing engineering should address the speeding-up and efficiency-improvement of lightweight part production • Virtual engineering should support the multi-functional design for the optimization of performance (including crashworthiness, durability, etc) • Activities are expected to focus on Technology Readiness Levels 4 to 6. NMBP 09-2016: Affordable weight reduction of high-volume vehicles and components taking into account the entire life-cycle TÜBİTAK Expected Impact -Reduced energy consumption of vehicle due to weight reduction: -10% -Cost-effective weight savings depending on intended production volumes, eg. For 50,000 units per annum: < 6 €/kg-saved For 100,000+ units per annum: < 3 €/kg-saved Improved LCA environmental impact (from cradle to grave): > +10% in terms of GWP (Global Warming Potential) Budget: 5-8 m € Type of Action: Research and Innovation Actions (%100) Dates: Single-Stage (21.01.2016 ) TÜBİTAK 2017 Çağrı Konuları GV-01-2017. Optimisation of heavy duty vehicles for alternative fuels use TÜBİTAK Scope: - Bio-methane mixed into liquefied natural gas: LNG is an attractive option to mitigate the high dependence of HDV on diesel. However, to achieve a significant level of GHG emission reduction, it is essential to shift from natural gas to biomethane. Proposals should consider the results of the LNG Blue Corridors projects and other projects funded by the EU under the European Green Vehicles Initiative - Biofuels ED95 and B30: the use of E95 (95 % ethanol and 5% ignition improver) and B30 (30% Biodiesel and 70% of diesel) for HDV could reduce the EU dependence on diesel. E95 has been already been demonstrated in urban fleets but could be an appropriate fuel for trucks running over short and medium distances. Proposals should contribute to the transition from the 1st to the 2nd generation of such biofuels. GV-01-2017. Optimisation of heavy duty vehicles for alternative fuels use TÜBİTAK Proposals should address the following actions: • Optimise and develop new powertrains (engine/after treatment systems) for the use of alternative fuels in HDV. • Evaluate energy efficiency, costs, performance, environmental benefits and durability of HDV running on alternative fuels. • Proposals should include prototype validation of the new vehicles. • Proposals should provide recommendations for the development of relevant standards, in particular for fuel quality requirements and for the type-approval of the heavy duty vehicles. Next generation electric drivetrains for fully electric vehicles, focusing on high efficiency and low cost TÜBİTAK Scope: - Functional system integration of electric machines (e.g. high speed motors) with transmissions, optimisation of energy recovery with the integration of braking systems. - Modular electric power train components compatible with both full electric and hybrid applications, sub-systems and topologies with enhanced NVH (Noise, Vibration and Heat), reliability, safety and fault tolerance and robustness, fit for mass manufacturing. - Integration of power electronics with battery charging functions together with associated control and of wide bandgap semiconductors providing high temperature, high power density, and high frequency capabilities. Next generation electric drivetrains for fully electric vehicles, focusing on high efficiency and low cost Expected Impact • An incremental reduction in total motor and power electronics system costs through optimised design for manufacture. • A 30% increase in specific torque and specific power of electric motors with a 50% increase in maximum operating speed whilst halving motor losses. • A 50% increase in the power density of motor power electronics, a 50% reduction in losses and the ability to operate with the same cooling liquids and temperatures used for the combustion engine in hybrid configurations. GV-05-2017.Electric vehicle user-centric design for optimised energy efficiency Expected Impact • Actions are expected to increase 25% the electric drive range of EVs across a wide extent of ambient conditions. • Actions will contribute to climate action and sustainable development objectives by achieving an improved energy efficiency without compromising in terms of both the performance of the respective systems and components (including de-icing/de-fogging, heating, cooling, lighting) and the safety, comfort and well-being of the vehicle occupants.
