The castle of Sultan Alara
The castle of Sultan Alara *My father, Sultan Alaeddin, commissioned the construction of this castle in 1231 to secure the caravan travelling from Alanya Harbour to the capital city of Konya. From that day on I have been gazing at the caravans streaming on the Silk Road. Toroslar’ı iki yana ayıran Alara Çayı, turkuaz mavisi bereketiyle süzüle süzüle akıyordu. Tarihi İpek Yolu’na ulaştığımda bir an gözlerimi kapattım. Yanı başımda durdu kervanlar en kıymetli yükleriyle, develer çaydan su içti, tüccarlar alın terini sildi. Binlerce yıllık tarihi bir solukta içime çekmiştim. Alara Vadisi üzerinde uçan bir şahin, çığlığıyla selamladı beni. Başımı hafifçe sol tarafa çevirdiğimde Alaeddin’in kızı Alara Sultan’ın Kalesi, tüm heybetiyle yükseliyordu. Çayımı bitirdiğimde “yolun The Alara stream, which divides the Taurus Mountains into two parts, was flowing meandering away with its turquoise fertility. I closed my eyes as I arrived at the Historical Silk Road. Caravans with their precious loads came to a halt by my side, camels drank water from the stream, merchants mopped their brow. I inhaled history of thousands of years all in one breath. A falcon, flying over the Alara valley, saluted me with its scream. Turning my head slightly to the left, the castle of Alara Sultan, daughter of Alaeddin, imposingly rose up there. I entered firstly the Alara Inn like many other caravans arriving at the valley. Souvenir shops had opened their doors to visitors redesigned in the rooms where travellers stayed overnight in the past. Commerce still continued on the Silk Road. I drank a cup of strong tea on the terrace of the inn to catch my breath. Another caravan was heading towards Central Anatolia by every sip and my eyes touched any and every wall of the Alara castle. The castle of Alara, built on a location beginning from the slopes of an awfully steep mountain, made me dizzy with its ramparts standing on the edge of a cliff. And I left the inn with wishes ANTALYA 71 Nisan - Mayıs / April - May 2011
