17 Sevda & Can Elgiz Fondatori/Proje4L/ Museo Elgiz d’arte Contemporanea Istanbul Elgiz Collection in Venice 18 During the 1980’s the Elgiz collection was gradually established from the work of Turkish artists. Only later did it acquire its present international identity, thus facilitating an international cultural dialogue. In March 2008, an exhibition by the private Italian collections “L’Alba Di Domani: Contemporary Art in Italy from Italian Collections” was hosted in the premises of Proje4L / Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art, Istanbul. The exhibition of the Elgiz Collection in Venice can be considered as the reciprocation of the Italian exhibition: An exhibition similarly based on a passion for art collecting. The exhibition in Ca’ Pesaro Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna consists of the artworks of a pioneer of Turkish modern art, all selected from the Elgiz Collection. When we started to collect art we had an interest in the work of younger artists following national and international trends. But we paid particular attention to the development of Turkish modern art. Within this context we have been following the works of Abdurrahman Öztoprak for the past 20 years, with love and care. Our relations with the artist after all these years became a friendship. We confess that we have had the benefit of his wisdom in the development of our own art appreciation. When we received an invitation to exhibit Turkish art from our Collection in the Museum of Modern Art in Venice, we immediately proposed Öztoprak. He is the artist represented in our collection through the entire span of his career. Recently, in November we organized a comprehensive exhibition to celebrate his 80th birthday. In this exhibition, his works were allied with the works of international, established artists from his generation, loaned by significant museums in Germany. For Öztoprak, being exhibited in Ca’ Pesaro Museum is surely a great privilege. Any artist would appreciate having such an invitation in recognition of their art. Öztoprak always worked with passion without compromising his principles. We, as collectors, are honoured to introduce his recent works in Venice, thus attracting the attention of a Venetian audience to Turkish art, in the hope that the doors of such an important Museum remain open for other talented Turkish artists. We have had a further pleasure to denominate this exhibition with an expression by the great poet Rainer Maria Rilke, of whom Öztoprak is a great admirer. Rilke lived his last years in Duino, a town close to Venice that he loved very much. Venice, the city admired by both artists, remains an intersection of cultures. Hence, with this exhibition, Öztoprak sets up a dialogue between Istanbul and Venice. We would like to thank all the persons and institutions who assisted in honouring this great master in the sumptuous salons of Ca’ Pesaro, and helped us to realize a significant cultural exchange between Turkey and Italy. 19 Sevda & Can Elgiz Founders/Proje4L/ Museum of Contemporary Art Istanbul Elgiz Koleksiyonu Venedik’te 20 1980’lerden itibaren oluşmaya başlayan koleksiyon hızla uluslararası bir kimlik kazanarak kültürlerarası bir diyaloğa zemin sağladı. The works of Abdurrahman Öztoprak, exhibited in Ca’ Pesaro demonstrate an extraordinary iconographic complexity and richness. The art of Öztoprak follows the development of European contemporary art movements. But he distills these within the context of his own process, research and inspiration, setting up some major stylistic distinctions. The experience of the artist, both as a designer and as an architect for 10 years provided him with the necessary energy and alertness, together with an attentiveness to detail. At the intersection of his alertness, research and experimentation, there stands the emotional and musical spirit of Öztoprak. The rhythm of light and color, the vibration of the space that becomes deep and mysterious as it draws one in, bring together the pulse of music with the severe rules of his visual language. The analogy with music is the best explanation of Öztoprak’s fusion of West with East, realized in the complexity of his language, technique and expression: A bridge which connects the two coasts of the same sea; a bridge made by the purity of his art. How did this exhibition develop? The intention of the exhibition is to present the Elgiz Collection in Venice, the first private contemporary museum in Istanbul, upon the invitation of the museum Ca’ Pesaro, Galleria Internazionale di Arte Moderna, Venezia. Sevda and Can Elgiz’s acceptance of this invitation, which has never been offered to another collection in Istanbul before, is for the presentation of Abdurrahman Öztoprak’s works, which have been predominant in their collection for quite a while. The exhibition should be evaluated primarily as a special dialogue between the artist and the collector. The premise of the exhibition is the realization and presentation of this dialogue. When they invited me to revise A. Öztoprak’s works, so as to reinvestigate and represent them critically for the purpose of facilitating a diverse questioning, I did not initially know what kind of exhibition design would provide an appropriate form. The thing that interested me most in the invitation to revise the key works of their collection was: how to reinterpret this collector-artist relationship without disturbing the intimacy of the dialogue. I confess the thought that puzzled me the most while designing this exhibition was, when to follow this dialogue and when to follow my own ideas. It was important to retain the perspective of the collectors , but it was also necessary to present the artist to an audience: contextualising the artist, establishing the different causal connections, while at the same time, preparing a major exhibition of an 80-year-old artist abroad. II. Why Rilke? The “backbone” of the exhibition should pose a question, an interpretation point, which could engage both Öztoprak and the Elgiz Collection. While making this particular enquiry, it was not a coincidence that I came across the poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926) who probably provided the most impressive examples of modern poetry in German, even though he was not from Germany. From my former conversations with Abdurrahman Öztoprak1, I knew of his passion for Rilke. For Öztoprak, who spent 30 years in Frankfurt, Rilke was as significant as the composers, Mahler and Beethoven, or the painters, Klee and Mondrian. Although it was one of the most hermetic works of Rilke, “Duino Elegies”2 is regarded as his masterpiece. It had been written, taking the Duino Castle as its starting point, in Trieste near Venice, where Öztoprak’s works are to be exhibited. Thus, Rilke’s images could provide a visual outline for Oztoprak’s exhibition. Choosing Rilke as a starting point required me to interpret the works of Öztoprak on a different level. Consequently, I started to read the “Duino Elegies” in Trieste where it was written. While working for this exhibition in Venice, I tried to read and comprehend it. From 10 elegies in the book, I found the fifth one the most appropriate to the exhibition I was preparing. The title of the exhibition emerged from the Italian translation of a verse of the fifth Elegie: “Alte Figure dello Slancio del Cuore”. These words can be translated into English as “the sublime figures of the leaping heart”.3 Öztoprak has an exceedingly sensitive, impassioned, almost “out of this world” approach to art and music, as anybody knows who has had the chance to be closely acquainted with him. Because he is a man who can truly understand the language of the angels, Rilke’s poems are the one’s which correspond to his art works and to his world view. With this idea as my starting point, I have tried to build the imaginative outlines of the exhibition with reference to the work of Rilke. A particular reason for me to choose the “Duino Elegies” was that Rilke reached a “sublime” point in this work, as Öztoprak, in his eightieth year, has also reached the pinnacle of his powers. 37 III. What kind of presentation would it be? There were some issues in my mind that I could not solve while interpreting Öztoprak’s works. When I analyzed his works’ development, I could sense his “extraordinary” imaginative capability, but could not fully absorb it. I needed a kind of transformative power to define these images. The suggestion of reevaluating Öztoprak’s works through Rilke’s verses can seem strange at first glance. But the difference between ordinary display and “creative display” is the desire to reach towards new interpretations by establishing unexpected synergies that were not previously considered. Before I chose Öztoprak’s works from The Elgiz Collection, I was closely considering, “Ca’ Pesaro”s architecture and how it could be transformed through the exhibition. Because the halls of “Ca’ Pesaro”, which belong to Seventeenth Century Baroque Architecture, are filled with the interesting artefacts of the museum’s collection, the space for temporary exhibitions was too small. Therefore, my aim was to interpret the two most interesting features of Öztoprak’s work as a “question” which is not instructional, but taking its support from Rilke’s poetry. It is observed that the phenomenon of “musical” rhythm emerges through form and colour in Abdurrahman Öztoprak’s abstract compositions, beginning from the 1960s. For over half a century, Öztoprak developed a “different” painting language through the inspiration of the composers of the classical period in Western Music, primarily from Beethoven. Öztoprak has a privileged status in Turkish Modern Painting because of the visualization in his canvases of a formerly unattempted synergy between music and painting. It is a significant process for him to pass through, after a conventional studio training in Fine Art at University, (1945 - 1950) moving slowly towards Semi-abstract painting (1950 - 52) and finally towards Abstract painting (1952 1954). The sixteen metre long wall, that could be considered the backbone of the exhibition, is divided into two sections to show the artist’s interpretation of the Abstract. I chose to place the anthology I devised from his “organically based abstract” compositions at the entrance, and his “geometrically based abstract” compositions towards the rear of the museum. As one of the main characteristics of his works, “variation” is being perceived on both sides of the wall. The works on both sides can be interpreted as an essential summary of Öztoprak’s works after 2000 ,and as the most eminently observed examples of the visual elements that he used in his paintings. The first element in these examples that captures the attention is Öztoprak’s relationship with the colour phenomenon. The colours that emerged after 2000, that can be qualified as the artist’s era of virtuosity, are more salient with their association with colour phenomenon than their emphasis on simply warm and cool tonalities. Öztoprak captured extremely disparate visual values by using the elements, silver, gold, and bronze in his canvases since 1971. When these elements, generally used in the traditional arts, come together with the distinctive colours of the artist, they awaken a feeling of a strong, cosmic atmosphere in his works. When Öztoprak’s forms, appearing, floating on the canvas, defying gravity so to speak, come together with the elements that create the atmosphere, they create exceedingly interesting visual synergies. These elements become part of the stylistic characteristics of the artist, but also distinguish Öztoprak when he is compared with his western contemporaries, even though he was nurtured by the eastern traditions (especially evident in his use of ornament). Questioning this phenomenon, which came up after his long-term periods of pursuit, fluctuation and tabula rasa, was one of the reasons for the Venice Exhibition to come into being. In his works, placed on both sides of the wall, comprising the backbone of the exhibition, the “light prisms” with their indeterminate sources, their refractions, reflections and their effects on colours are so clear. My intention for the audience was for them to see all these better. Generally, artists have the tendency to conceal their findings and ideas, and to have a self-seeking attitude. Öztoprak’s aim, on the contrary, was to share every pictorial discovery with anybody who discerns it, bringing an exceedingly distinct sincerity to his works. Those who are prepared to look closely at these works, would have the opportunity to understand how Öztoprak reached his aims throughout his art life; to see and comprehend how he developed his unique visual language. Hence I designed the whole exhibition as the answer to a question: How did Öztoprak attain his unique interpretation of colour in his implementation of the elements of gold, bronze and silver? Even though it seems a little abstract at first glance, it is this question and it’s answers, which directed the design of the exhibition. Where did Öztoprak first see these elements: gold, bronze and silver within contemporary art? It may be, because we see all these elements in Islamic Art, ranging from architecture to the miniature, from calligraphy to textile; for decorative purposes, and in the religious and civil architecture of Istanbul, that we may deduce that these images, derived from the city in which the artist was born and lived, have become engraved in his memory as part of his visual vocabulary. It’s necessary to heed the captivating words of the famous Turkish poet Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar4 who describes this memory significantly: “Alas, one would easily be weary of gilded ceiling, silver material and memories of the past. No, it is certain that we do not like these things for their own sake. It is the vacancy they leave behind that pulls us at them. No matter if they leave a trace or not, on account of the scrimmage in us, we seek an aspect of ours in them that we thought it’s lost.”5 It is not easy to specify the reminiscences or the memories associated with gold, bronze and silver materials for the artist who is raised in a deep-rooted Ottoman family. These reminiscences are derived from being one of the last witnesses, being the “Bosphorus Child” in full acceptance of the word, of a disappeared “culture” which could stay alive only until the 1950s. After Oztoprak’s meeting with a Paul Klee6 painting at an exhibition in Stuttgart in 1967, and then viewing the 4th Documenta7 exhibition (1968), Oztoprak’s visual vocabulary would reflect his lasting impressions. Arnold Bode, the founder of the event was organizing the 4th Documenta personally for the last time, in which the movements such as Op Art, Kinetic Art, Minimalism, and Pop Art emerged. In the 4th Documenta, the works of artists such as, Carl Andre, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, François Morellet, Barnett Newmann, Ad Reinhardt, Frank Stella, and Victor Vasarely were exhibited. A great many of these artists were experimenting with diverse materials while aiming to interpret the phenomenon of “flux”7. The intention of Öztoprak was by working only with paints on canvas, he would create dynamism and a “flux”. 8 The Artist did not want to get into mechanical experiments, even though he had a perfect knowledge of the Kinetic and Op Art movements. Being a keen and critical viewer of these significant exhibitions, Öztoprak observed how the movements had almost become a fashion in contemporary art those days, and that they were not actually presenting anything new. In 1971, Öztoprak started to tread a path that he would always follow, by attempting to use gilding in his work exemplified in “Golden Roads”, a work which will also be exhibited in this exhibition. In 1974, he finished his work “Pan Flute” in which he used gold, bronze and silver elements as “leitmotivs”, finding his own colour scale. At forty-eight, after a long period of trial and error - going back to a starting point, the artist had finally found his own road. After moving his studio from Frankfurt to Istanbul in 1975, and beginning to create so many fascinating paintings in the sense of a series, he was not only experimenting with the elements of gold, bronze and silver, but also making progress towards a new creative synthesis through them. 39 IV. What is the price of the leaping heart? Öztoprak began to listen to Beethoven’s music, which later he will become passionate about, from a chalet facing the Bosporus, on a moment when “his star was shining in the sky”. When this acquaintance turned into a composition sixty five years later in 2005, he achieved a richness of interpretation by passing through a “postern gate” presumably from a gate that no other Turkish painter went through before, which is out of bounds and beyond time. The reason for “Missa Solemnis, a Homage to Beethoven – In Memoriam of Nüvit Özdoğru” (2005) being exclusively exhibited at Ca’ Pesaro museum, is for the audience to understand how this composition came to life, and even to follow his “leaping heart” efficaciously. One should remember that in the end, there is a price, even for the leaping heart. The presentation in Venice aims to present the artist’s works, compiled as an anthology, from 1971 to 2007, as examples of a “mature” art life. I would like to express my gratitude to Öztoprak, who never left any of my questions unanswered, for his frankness, and offering up the possibility of a mutual discussion. The long walks with him in Akkaya, did not only open a door to his art for me, but also helped me to apprehend the price of the leaping heart. I would like to thank Sevda and Can Elgiz who were not only supporting me, but also for giving me the courage, and providing the environment conducive to my experiment. It is not possible for me to forget the assistances of Vittoro Urbani and Michaela Rizzo who provided huge support for the exhibition from its inception. I would also like to thank the Elgiz Contemporary Art Museum team (Selen Akıncı, Defne Ayhan) who often worked overtime, and especially their executive, Işın Önol. 1 In 2006, 2007 in Muğla-Akkaya, our conversations were centred on music and poetry rather than the visual arts. 2 “Duino Elegies” are a series of poems which Rilke formulated, and completed between 1912 – 1922. The intimacy between angels and humans, defined by a quite impressive texture of images, and metaphors, makes this series a difficcult one to interpret. Rilke finished the work by struggling with himself, so to speak. In spite of the abstract concepts explored, “condition humaine”, can be described as the main theme of these poems. This book, together with the various attempts at its interpretation, is considered the climax of Modern Poetry, as well as being one of the masterpieces of the poet. 3 Since 2006, under “Cem Publishing House” Yüksel Pazarkaya has brought Rilke’s oeuvre into our language in the chronological order in which his poems were first published. He is one of the rare translators of the German language, having an impressive translation style, when evaluated alongside Behçet Necatigil, and Can Alkor. I would like to express my gratitude to him for this translation, and for opening the doors of Rilke’s poetry in the turkish language. 4 Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962) is a significant creative writer who interprets the themes of melancholy, despondency, and exhaustion of life in a dramatic language of poetry in Turkish Literature, especially drawing fascinating portraits of the cities of Istanbul and Bursa. 5 Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Five Cities, Dergah Publishings, Istanbul 2008 (24th edition) P. 207. 6 Interview with the artist, May 10 2006, Akkaya. 7 4th Documenta Internationale Ausstellung, Volume 1: Malerei und Plastik; Volume 2: Graphik/Objekte, Kassel 1968. www.documentaarchiv.de 8 Interviews with the Artist, May 11 2006, Akkaya. 40 Painting 442 • 2005 • 180 x 120 cm • mixed media on canvas 42 43 “Kalp Coşkusu”nun Duyumsattıkları Elgiz Koleksiyonu’ndaki A. Öztoprak’ın resimlerinin Venedik’teki sergisi üzerine 44 I. Bu Sergi Nasıl Oluştu? 47 IV. 2006’dan beri sorularımı yanıtsız bırakmayan Abdurrahman Öztoprak’a ortak tartışma imkânı tanıyan açık yürekliliğinden ötürü minnettarım. Kendisiyle Akyaka’da yaptığım uzun yürüyüşler, bana sadece onun sanatının kapılarını aralamakla kalmadı, “yürek coşkusunun” bedellerini kavramama yardımcı oldu. Araştırmalarımı desteklemekle kalmayıp, deneylere girişme cesaretini veren Sevda-Can Elgiz’e sağladıkları çalışma ortamı nedeniyle teşekkür ederim. Vittorio Urbani 54 55 56 57 Painting 424 • 2003 • 125 x 198 cm • mixed media on canvas Öztoprak and Ca’ Pesaro 58 Abdurrahman Öztoprak (born in Istanbul in 1927) is one of the leading artists in Turkish abstraction. He recently turned 80 years of age and continues to work with passion and vigour. The Elgiz Collection in Istanbul, an important collection of Turkish and international contemporary art, which conserves many of his works of different periods, is showing an homogeneous group of paintings by Öztoprak including works of large dimensions at the Ca’ Pesaro Museum of Modern Art. Öztoprak, in the context of visual culture, presents several different strands of modernism in his development as a visual artist. Two of the most important are that of Geometric and lyrical Abstraction. Geometric Abstraction is so much in keeping with the paintings of Northern Europe and the West in the twentieth century. Öztoprak’s more fluid and lyrical abstraction, with its inspiration taken from the organic and the spiritual, as in his master piece “Missa Solemnis”, tends to interest us more. This latter mode of painting, to our way of thinking, the more personal and original of the artist, seems also to be that in which one senses more completely the synthesis of the artist’s two great loves, painting and music. It always seemed impossible to represent the world of sound through painting, not only, as in the baroque allegories, thronged with shining musical instruments. The fluid forms, instead of representing dynamic lines and energetic tensions as in futuristic art, seem, for Öztoprak, to be the ideal vehicle for formal vagueness and the immateriality which belong precisely to the world of music. Harmony, a term attributed to music, is an appropriate adjective to describe the sensation evoked by the contemplation of this mode of painting. On show are 50 years of personal and artistic history, vividly demonstrating a coherence and fidelity to his own inspiration; a way of working which maintains its own freshness, which presents, even if following a line of its own style, as a non repetitive, heartfelt gesture. The coherence is given through having understood that fidelity to an artistic medium. In the context of painting’s crisis, within the past fifty years, as a contemporary medium, Öztoprak, far from falling into repetitive and empty gestures, pursued even deeper research into the medium through the simplification of his expressive means. By simplification we do not mean a levelling out, but rather a progressive digging. The excavation which the great poetry of the twentieth century Europe effected with words; continually researching that which is in essence, according to that which the critics have called the “Art of taking away”, thus delivering to literature perfect texts such as those of the ancient lyrics of Greece. The twentieth century quest for the essential relates also to the choice of dark colours which in themselves are not appealing. Perhaps it is the rejection of an easy beauty in exchange for a marvellous equilibrium. Colours, which like musical chords, must yield up to the arrangement of the whole harmonious composition. There are a number of reasons for this exhibition. During the 1950s Öztoprak received a state bursary to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. During this period, he approached the art of the fresco, whilst observing the developments in contemporary painting in what was at that time a vibrant art scene in Rome. During the following years, back in Istanbul, Öztoprak executed a public commission of a large fresco. The representation of this experience, of the cross-pollenation between two worlds, in itself provides enough of a reason for an exhibition. What is more, to present this artist in the spaces of Ca’ Pesaro is a compensation: a repossession by the Museum, of pages of the history of twentieth century art - indeed the century of Ca’ Pesaro, the great 59 and terrible “short century” - sometimes not documented in her glittering halls. Ca’ Pesaro, after the glorious beginning at the start of the twentieth century as the “International Gallery of Modern Art” (the first museum in the world to consciously confers on itself the title of “international”) has accompanied the path of the Venice Biennale, often documenting the lively international connections and acquiring important, and what are today, priceless works of art. Since the Second World War, however, this important tradition has been interrupted, thus creating an historic gap in the collections represented. And finally the exhibition is, for Venice, yet another meeting point of Mediterranean passage; a centre which today is marginalized, but still able to offer the cultural assets, a reconstruction of meaning; a connection point for diverse discussions, no longer only partial and fragmentary. Included, side by side with his contemporaries, the presence of Öztoprak is also considered by the City as an invitation, welcoming Turkish culture into an international context: A country at the boundary of, but not on the edge of, a Europe which is today too tempted to close itself within its own white walls. The role of the writer in the preparation of the exhibition “Alte Figure dello Slancio del Cuore: Opere di Abdurrahman Öztoprak” at the Museum of Modern Art at Ca’ Pesaro has not been “simply” that of co-curator - questionable though it is whether such a role can ever be considered simple - but that of cultural manager and juggler, or maybe that of organizer and cultural mediator with curatorial authority... Enough said, I could continue with a list of similar titles. All of them, however, with the common trait of hybrid responsibility, each tied in with a number of professional roles. As one of the first laws of Mendelian genetics establishes, in hybridization - that is to say, in the crossbreeding of different species, we find the development of certain unexpressed potentialities of both parents, the result of which creates that which is called the “prime of the hybrids”. On a cultural plane, the position of “hybrid” is both evolutionarily promising, but at the same time adaptively dangerous. What is more, from a professional point of view, this advantage of “crosswise” positions is granted by the gift of a different way of seeing things, that of an oblique view, such as when professional skills applied in a different field to the one for which they were originally intended, result in a novel approach, fresh and unconventional ideas, and prove to be the most creative. The change of viewpoint is not a recognized professional instrument that allows a critical judgement which is applied in the doing, beyond the conventions of fashion and success. The cultural manager-juggler is not he who has delved into the cultural and artisitic profile of the artist; nor he who sets the artist in context with his contemporary artists to be boxed into his place in the history of culture; nor even he who has picked the works of art for the exhibition, choosing them in such a way as to offer an organic presentation to the public. He is rather the one who keeps everything, sometimes in perilous equilibrium, going back to the idea of a juggler, stands on his head to balance the different vectoral trajectories derived from the organization of transport, catering, the coordination of the graphics and images, the installation of the works, the extra custody, the production of the banners, the invitations and everything else. He executes an heterogeneous series of actions, which require different professional abilities, often not easy to coordinate, often in contradiction with one another. The result of his actions is the production of “the exhibition” as a homogeneous event, as seen by an optimistic and productive point of view: as seen by the public. An exhibition represents the offbeat 60 vision of he who desired, and even dreamed of the show.; of he who sees the works of art slide out of the transportation crates, of he who thinks it all over again through the tired and sometimes dubious face of the artist; and above all, he who is not intent on freezing it on the pages of art history books, nor in the idiotic statistics of the auction results. This same text, produced “before”, but destined to be read “after”, is a deliberate act of optimism and a positive missive to the future, like the augural prediction written on the blue majolica scarab slipped between the bindings of the Royal mummy, entrusted with love and fear to the unknown; to an uncertain future. Mendel’in genetik kanunlarının ortaya çıkardığı gibi, melezleşmede (hibridleşme), yani farklı türlerin çapraz döllenmesinde, ebeveynlerden her birinin ifade edilmemiş özellikleri ortaya çıkar. Bunun sonucu olarak “gelişmiş melez” şekillenir. Kültürel düzlemde “melez”in konumu evrimsel anlamda vaatkâr, ancak aynı zamanda uygulama anlamında tehlikelidir. Vittorio Urbani 66 67 68 Painting 414 • 2003 • 123 x 123 cm • mixed media on canvas Painting 415 • 2003 • 123 x 123 cm • mixed media on canvas 71 72 Painting 443 • 2006 • 240 x 240 cm • mixed media on canvas 74 Painting 353 • 2000 • 130 x 130 cm • mixed media on canvas 76 77 78 Painting 390 • 2002 • 130 x 130 cm • mixed media on canvas 81 82 83 Gold Road • 1971 • 51 x 39 cm • mixed media on canvas 85 Painting 351 A-B-C • 2000 • 167 x 380 cm • mixed media on canvas Fishing Blue Fish in Bebek • 1955 • 64 x 41 cm • oil on canvas 89 90 91 Painting 350 A-B-C • 2000 • 160 x 360 cm • mixed media on canvas 94 95 96 97 Pan pipes • 1974 • 41.5 x 33.4 cm • mixed media on canvas 99 100 101 102 Missa Solemnis Respect For L.V. The Palace 112 The grandiose palace, now the seat of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, was built in the second half of the seventeenth century for the noble and wealthy Pesaro family, who commissioned the greatest Venetian baroque architect, Baldassarre Longhena, who also designed the church of the Salute and Ca’ Rezzonico. Work began in 1659 starting from the landside; the courtyard, with its striking loggias, was completed by 1676; the splendid facade on the Grand Canal had already reached the second floor by 1679, but, on Longhena’s death in 1682, the palace was still unfinished. The Pesaro family entrusted its completion to Gian Antonio Gaspari who completed it in 1710, basically respecting the original project. In creating Ca’ Pesaro, a masterpiece of Venetian baroque civic architecture, Longhena was inspired by Sansovinian classicism, elaborating solutions and idioms capable of expressing a new and sumptuous harmony. This is exemplified in the Grand Canal façade, with its complex composition, powerful but well-balanced: above a plinth decorated with lionfaces and monstrous heads rises a severe diamond-pointed, rusticated facade with two rows of windows, opened in the middle by twin doorways surmounted by mascarons and statues. The Sansovinian motif is more explicit on the first floor, with the insistent chiaroscuro rhythm of the deep-set arches and protruding columns. On the second-floor, designed by Antonio Gaspari, the facade is enriched by ornamentation in the pendentives and the entablatures. No less regal is the vast entrance-hall, finely laid out along the axis of the entire building, spacious and well-defined, its half-light contrasting with the luminous clarity of the courtyard, articulated around the monumental well-head, and enclosed by a terrace and an ashlar-arcade, marked out by doric pilaster-strips, and overlooked by the upper storeys with their architravewindows. Sumptuous and imposing, but harmonious and organic in its structure, the palace was constantly enriched, during the long years of its construction, by an equally important process of interior decoration. The palace still conserves some of the fresco and oil decorations of the ceilings, the work of such artists as Bambini, Pittoni, Crosato, Trevisani and Brusaferro; there was also a ceiling by G.B. Tiepolo, with Zephyrus and Flora, which was transferred to the Museum of Ca’ Rezzonico in 1935. But the collections of the Pesaro family, as documented in the archives, must have been even more remarkable, including such artists as Vivarini, Carpaccio, Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, as well as the most famous Venetian artists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This great heritage had been completely dispersed by 1830, the year of the death of the last Pesaro, who had auctioned off most of the collection in London. The palace passed first to the Gradenigo family and then to the Armenian Mechitarist Fathers, who used it as a college. It was finally bought by the Bevilacqua family, and became the property of Duchess Felicita Bevilacqua La Masa. It was she who decreed the present usage of the building, bequeathing it to the city in 1898, as a museum of modern art. The Birth of the Museum In 1902, thanks to the bequest of the Duchess Felicita Bevilacqua La Masa, the Venice Town Council decided to use the palace to host the municipal collection of modern art, which had been started in 1897, the year of the second Venice Biennale. Shortly afterwards, between 1908 and 1924, the ammezzato-storey was used to host the historic Bevilacqua La Masa Exhibitions, which, in lively contrast with the Venice Biennale, favoured a generation of young artists, including Boccioni, Casorati, Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini. The collection was enriched over the years by further acquisitions and donations. The former mainly consisted of works bought by the Town Council at the Venice Biennale: up until the 1950s European art was favoured, in agreement with the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna di Roma, which generally acquired Italian works at the Biennale. From the 1960s onwards a new policy was adopted, privileging Italian art. As a result there was a noticeable increase in the number of works by those artists already mentioned, who, thanks to the Bevilacqua La Masa Exhibitions and the polemics that surrounded them, had made Ca’ Pesaro famous as a driving force for innovation in Italian art. The collection of works from nineteenth-century Venice is also remarkable. As for the donations, they started with the founding donation by Prince Alberto Giovanelli, followed by Baron Edoardo Franchetti, Baron Ernst Seeger, Filippo Grimani, but above all by Associazione Industriali e Commercianti Veneziani. In 1914 a number of notable works in wax by Medardo Rosso were acquired, and in the sixties the De Lisi bequest enriched the gallery with works by Morandi, De Chirico, Carrà, Kandinsky, Mirò and Matta, thus filling certain gaps left by the municipal policy of acquisition; finally, in 1990 the gallery received the valuable Wildt donation. www.museiciviciveneziani.it 113 114 115 Ca’ Pesaro – Saray 116 Günümüzde Uluslararası Modern Sanat Müzesi’ne ev sahipliği yapmakta olan muazzam saray, 17. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında varlıklı Pesaro ailesi adına, projesi Venedikli barok mimar Baldassare Longhena tarafından tasarlanarak inşa edilmiştir. Opened to the public in 2005, at the premises of Proje4L/ Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art, it presents the works of both internationally recognized names exhibiting in large exhibitions such as Manifesta, Documenta, and Biennials together with the works of promising young artists. The collection is not based on specific a specific concept. The artworks in the collection are selected and integrated with the same affection. In each exhibition there’s no hierarchy in the selection of the artworks; the relative maturity of the artists and the nationality are disregarded. Located on an area of almost 2000 square meters, the space was conceived, designed and constructed as a museum. The Elgiz Museum has a significant location, connecting the art and the commercial centers of the city. In 2001, the museum was established under the name of Proje4L in order to support the work of young artists. Since 2005, the museum has been housing the Elgiz Collection. The museum presents a revolving six monthly selection from the collection. In addition to this, it also exhibits young artists’ works in the Artvarium, its special project room. The Elgiz Museum shares its knowledge and experience by holding conferences on collecting contemporary art. The collection, comprising the works of both Turkish and international masters and emerging artists, exhibits a vide diversity in terms of iconography, style, genre and media. The scope of the collection both formally and conceptually represents the last 20 years of the contemporary art. The identity of the Elgiz Collection reflects the developing international art scene. Fummo premiati in dieci. More than Half a Lifetime”* Abdurrahman Öztoprak … I came into the world on 1 July, 1927 at Rumelihisarı in Istanbul. My birthplace at the top of the hill was a house set in a large garden with many trees; pine, chestnut, horse-chestnut and others. From the day I began to crawl, I began my acquaintance with nature…My mother was very interested in art and was one of the two women who played an important role in my becoming an artist. Musical Séances At the beginning of the 1940s, I made the acquaintance of the children of Prof. Clemens (Emin) Bosch who had come to our country, as his wife Johanna was Jewish. She was the other woman I mentioned who, with my mother, helped me to establish my identity. A real intellectual, this tall, elegant woman, whose red hair reached down to her waist, knew Latin and spoke French, English, and Turkish as well as German, her mother- tongue… Following a delightful childhood in wonderful natural surroundings, I spent my youth with this highly cultivated family. Michael (Cemil) was the oldest of the five siblings and the same age as me. In the afternoons, we used to hold musical séances and play the records that Prof. Bosch had brought with him from Germany. Our music room was Cemil’s bedroom. After closing the shutters to darken the room, we used to listen to music on the gramophone for one and a half to two hours, in worshipful silence… There was no place for lies or trickery in my life with this family, and it was with them that my appetite for reading increased. I set aside the time between the evening meal and bedtime for reading. At that age a saying I read and took to heart was one by the English poet Alfred Tennyson:” Consider your opponent to be as least as intelligent as yourself”. These words have played an important part throughout my life in preventing me from falling into negative attitudes and in the overall development of my personality… My Years at the Academy An important event of the successful years I spent at the studio of the Academy, which I entered in 1945, was to encounter Jean Cocteau. He came through the door together with my teacher! This was an unbelievable and impossible dream for us. Cocteau’s words, “Your work is more successful than that of the students at the Paris Academy“ made me very proud. Rome Immediately after completing my military service, I found myself in Rome....to study fresco-painting at the Fine Arts Academy of Rome! It was like a dream! I was face to face with the actual paintings of artists from Botticelli to Michelangelo, Raphael to Titian, from Andrea Del Sarto to Correggio, which up to a year ago, I had only seen in prints. On one side was Castel S.Angelo where Cem Sultan had been imprisoned and the final scene of Tosca takes place; on the other the Theatro Argentina where Rossini’s Barber of Seville was first staged and where the Saint Cecilia concerts took place which I went hungry for three days at the end of every month in order to attend. The Return Home On my return from Rome, I was greeted by a request from Ordinarius Professor Emin Onat, Rector of Istanbul Technical University, and my former teacher, Nurullah Berk who wished to have a fresco made for the Taşkışla Building of ITU… In 1954, as well as my exhibition at the Maya Gallery, I participated in the competition organized for the 10th anniversary of the Yapı and Kredi Bank on the theme of “A Picture to Illustrate Various Productive Activities in the Economic Life of Turkey” with a painting 3.00 x 2.00m in size. The judges of the exhibition consisted of Kazım Taşkent, the founder of the bank, and the * Abdurrahman Oztoprak: Paintings Which Move Me, Özkan Eroğlu, 1999, Bilim Sanat Galerisi 134 eminent art critics and historians, Lionello Venturi, Herbert Reed and Paul Fieren who were participating at that time in the first and last International Art Critics Congress held in this country. Ten people, including myself, were judged worthy of awards in this competition. In the 1950s I worked on frescos and mosaics and in various techniques, for buildings, hospitals, hotels and offices… While working on interior decoration projects, I used my knowledge of the techniques and elements of pictorial art colour, form and space as required in architecture. While painting I subconsciously expressed my interest in interior space. My combined interests earned me success in both fields and gave me the opportunity to work comfortably at my art without having to make concessions. Germany In the 1960s....as a family, we made the decision to move to Germany. There I worked [as an architect and an interior designer]… My design-projects for well-known firms such as DEGUSSA, Mercedes, and BASF were implemented, as were those for the interior of the first three stations of the Frankfurt City Metro, the Werner Reimers building and the renovation of the Senckenberg Natural History Museum. .. As Frankfurt is situated in the middle of Europe… it was not difficult for me to go to important artistic events in Frankfurt itself and the towns and countries around it. [Among them], the exhibition dedicated to the founder of Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, held in Stuttgart in 1968, and, in the same year, the Henry Moore exhibition at the Tate Gallery, London. But it was in an exhibition of Paul Klee, held in Stuttgart in 1967 that I found what I had been searching for. My new point of departure was a watercolour work by Klee on a small plaster tablet with a gold background. The first symphony I ever heard, way back in my childhood, was Beethoven’s Sixth (Pastoral) Symphony, which I listened to with worshipful awe, at the music séances held by the Bosch family…One of the reasons why my life is based on music today is my belief that Beethoven, rather than being a human being, can only be a god of music. Otherwise, what name can I give to those musicians who raise human emotions to the greatest heights? My Understanding of Art Since character is formed by time and place, I have always wondered how a person who does not know nature, who cannot tell a human being from a tree, can understand Beethoven, or how a person who does not know the work of Palladio can receive any pleasure from Italian opera… Under the influence of music, I always wanted painting, a visual art, to be truly dynamic. First, as music is abstract, thinking that a painting should be abstract also, I took this as my principle, after doing some research. During my final years at the Academy, I concentrated my research in abstraction, reasoning the visual counterpart of music had to be abstract in painting also. I held an exhibition at the Istanbul City Gallery, following which I decided not to hold another exhibition until the problem of the dynamism I was looking for had been resolved. In the 1960s, during the course of my research in Paris, Rotterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam and other cities, I had the opportunity of meeting artists of the Kinetic Movement. I saw their work again in 1968 at the fourth Documenta Exhibition in Kassel, the most successful exhibition of its kind. Play of light, use of various objects and materials that did not depend on canvas or anything else except a defined space, prevented these works from being reproduced else where. My own desire was to achieve a clearly defined dynamism on ordinary canvas without the use of auxiliary objects. The small work by Klee, only 21x11 cm, was a touchstone for me, and helped me to resolve the problem of making a transition from three dimensions to four, thus uniting my lifelong desire with the means to achieve it. I would like to end this short account of my sixty year art life with these words of the German artist, Sigmar Polke: “The things that seem as I think are those who in time have truly grown up within my heart.” 135 “Yarı Ömürden Bir Fazla”* Abdurrahman Öztoprak 1 Temmuz 1927’de İstanbul, Rumelihisarı’nda dünyaya gelmişim. Doğduğum ev, Rumelihisarı’nın tepesinde, bahçesinde çam, atkestanesi, kestane gibi çeşitli ağaçların bulunduğu büyük bahçeli bir evdi. (…) (…) Doğayla tanışıklığım emeklemeye başladığım gün başladı. Annem sanata düşkün, benim sanatçı olmamda en büyük rolü olan iki soylu kadından biriydi. (…) (…) Öğleden sonraları, Prof. Bosch’un Almanya’dan beraberinde getirdiği plâklarla müzik seansları yapardık. Müzik odamız Cemil’in odasıydı. Pencerelerin panjurlarını kapatıp odayı loşlaştırır, Cemil’in yönettiği gramofondan bir buçuk, iki saat kadar, ibadet edercesine, sessizlik içinde, müzik dinlerdik. (…)
