JUNE 2014 Sixtieth Edition BISI COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER GUIDING STATEMENT OF THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ISTANBUL The British International School Istanbul provides a caring international environment, fostering cultural diversity. Individual students achieve their full academic potential, inspired to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens of the global community. YOUR COMMUNITY! YOUR NEWS! 1 Message from the Pre/Primary School Our final month of this academic year was rather eventful! June celebrated our Primary COBIS Team’s return from Abu Dhabi. They played their best in football and basketball tournaments and the swimming competition; their placing certainly improved this year. The children had worked exceptionally hard training for this event throughout the year. They represented the school impeccably. Thank you to Mr Huegel; Head of PE, Mr Boardman, and all the parents who accompanied the children on this trip. The month also opened with rather unexpected inclement weather. The popular phrase ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ prevailed and Fun Day only saw cloud rather than the torrential rain we had witnessed the previous day. The children enjoyed the train ride, the bouncy slide and the climbing wall. They appreciated all the stalls organised by the teachers, for example, face painting, treasure hunt, hula-hoop stalls and many more. Our families enjoyed the Korean, Turkish and Indian food in our Food Court, and sampled the many cakes on offer from our PTA Cake Stall. There was entertainment prepared throughout the day for all on our Courtyard Stage. The raffle ended the day. An outstanding amount of money was raised for our three chosen charities this year. Thank you so much to all our community; the PTA, under the excellent guidance of Jenny Norden, the teachers and all the stallholders, for making Fun Day a great day out for the children as well as making a remarkable amount of money for our charities. The Year 3 children participated in their residential trip to Iznik. They delighted in the sights and sounds of Iznik for their History/ Geography/ Art projects, and also experienced their first time away from their parents for many. Thank you to the Year 3 teachers for planning the trip meticulously, and to Nikki Dereboy, Year 6 City Campus teacher, for all her assistance on this trip. The Year 6 children also had an extremely busy month! They participated in their second residential trip to Kartepe; studying mountains and also having lots of fun. During the final week of school, the Year 6 students at the City Campus enjoyed an afternoon of bowling and dinner at Metro City. The Year 6 students at Zekeriyakoy Campus had a wonderful time during their sleepover; swimming at school first, then going to see a film at Istinye Park, and finally having a sleepover at school! Thank you to the Year 6 teachers for arranging these events this month. The ESL also children adored their trip and picnic. Thank you to the ESL teachers for planning this trip so well for our ESL children. The Swimming Gala occurred punctiliously. We separated the Gala into Years 3/4 and Years 5/6 this year as numbers are growing. Thank you to the PE department for successfully organising the morning. The Zekeriyakoy Key Stage 1 children performance of ‘Eddie the Penguin Saves the Day’ and it was delightful to watch. ’Recycle, reuse and renew’ has been a prevalent theme this year and so it was apt that we ended the year on this note. The children were penguins and polar bears whose ice was melting, trees were dramatically being chopped down, people were using too many electrical appliances and cars in Istanbul. Eddie communicated his message through a radio show and also informed the Prime Minister that we really ought to look after our world better. Thank you to the Year 1 and Year 2 teachers for preparing the children so perfectly! We pride ourselves on our transition procedures. All our children moved up to meet their next Class Teacher this month. The Early Years children from our Reception classes and their parents, met with the Year 1 children and their teachers in our gardens and enjoyed an informal tea together. Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed visiting our Secondary School for two days; the children can’t wait to move up! And finally, thank you for attending our Awards Ceremonies. Your children have worked hard this year for which they must be commended. For those of you moving onto pastures new, we wish you all the very best for the future. For those families staying with us, see you on the 1st September! Have a great summer everyone. Amanda Ilhan Pre and Primary School Deputy Director Richard I’Anson Pre and Primary School Director 2 Alkent Campus—EYFS Awards Ceremony 3 Zek Campus—EYFS Awards Ceremony 4 5 Key Stage 1—Swimming Gala The KS1 swim demonstration allowed our students to show their parents their skills and safety considerations in the pool. The students worked through progressions for front crawl, back stroke and diving using the kickboards to show that they understand that a good streamlined position is key to effective swimming. Well done to all and to the staff who helped organise a fun morning. Miss Bell 6 Key Stage 2—Swimming Gala The K.S.2 Swimming Gala took place on Friday 13th. June 2014. The Years 3 and 4 competed first with the Years 5 and 6 finishing their races at 13.30. after which they all had some well deserved Pizza! The overall House winners were Cedar with 202 points, Maple were second with 171 points and Oak Third with 165 points. Gill Yenilmez 7 Zek Year 3—Iznik Trip Year 3 went to Iznik to learn about Iznik tiles as part of their history topic. While there they made their own Iznik tile, tried their hands at Ebru and still found time for a dip in the lake, a spot of games playing and of course chilling out in the sun. Jill Parker 8 Primary COBIS Games—Abu Dhabi We did excellent! After weeks and month of training, in the last 6 weeks before the games that included skipping lunches and working on Basketball formations, the final date of departure to Abu Dhabi COBIS games had arrived on 28th of May. All 15 students, 7 accompanying parents and 2 teachers travelling had a super time. 1st Day was the Basketball in a fantastic brand new massive and modern sports arena. After winning our group beating 3 teams we made it into the cup competition. Unfortunately we lost the first knock out game ranking us overall 4th at the end of the day. 2nd Day was the swimming in the 50m pool of the Armed Forces Officers Club, which was also our hotel. We had a couple of good races and the girls freestyle relay, Valeria made it into their respective finals, finishing the finals overall in good 5th and 6th places. The swimming was absolutely dominated by the two teams from the host school and the African schools. Some of their swimmers having up to 5 gold medals around their necks and several overall COBIS records.,.. Last day was about football and we travelled to "the dome" a blow up bubble with a big seven a side field. We won one game but lost two from which one was unlucky 0:1 against the later finalist. In the looser knock out round we where the stronger team and had several dangerous goal shots but an unlucky goal and just 3 attacks from the opened sadly ended our hopes for more and an even better overall ranking... The students where very upset about this defeat. In the end a fantastic trip meeting students from all around the globe and living together in a big hotel with BBQ evenings, cinema nights, gala dinners, beach trips, ceremonies and very adventurous airport experiences. BISI’s overall 8th position was the best ever result achieved in a COBIS game and after comparing to the school we were up against this win was definitely a success. Please see some articles in the following pages. Christian Huegel 9 10 11 12 FUN DAY—7 June 2014 13 Message from the Secondary School This is the final newsletter for the 2013 – 2014 academic year and by the time you read it virtually everyone will have breathed a very big sigh of relief and moved into summertime relaxation mode. What this means to you and your family will be very personal; you could spend your time lying on a beautiful sunkissed beach somewhere doing nothing more strenuous than sipping a brightly coloured drink through a straw; you could be driving all over your native country trying to fit in visits to all of your relatives and friends and anyone else who knows you; you could be trekking in the Himalayas or visiting Machu Pixu or doing a thousand and one other things. If you are a Year 12 student, you will probably be working on your extended essay for the entire summer. Whatever you’re planning, I really do hope you are planning to enjoy yourself! Amidst all of this enjoyment let’s spare a thought for all of our support staff who will be working throughout the summer getting things ready for the new academic year and for our Admissions staff for whom this is undoubtedly the busiest period of the year! The end of June is always a little poignant in school – we say goodbye to so many people. The end of the school year is a good time for families to move on to pastures new and it is the time that we lose many of our students. For all the Secondary families who are moving on we wish you the very best of luck in your new lives, whether it is a return to your home country or to somewhere completely new to you, you go with our very best wishes. To our students who are moving on, you leave behind your friends and your teachers who will all miss you but who all hope you will be happy and successful in your new school. We also say goodbye to several of our colleagues and, again this is never easy; on behalf of the whole community I would like to say goodbye, good luck and thank you for all your efforts over the years. This year our leaving teachers are: Felix Fearnley Jameel Saleh John and Joy Bosman Rhys Jones and Lucy McNaughton Sunanda Rao Valerie Van Sice You will all be missed by your colleagues, your students and their parents. You have all played your part in making BISI what it is today and we wish every one of you the very best for your future and we hope that it will only ever bring good things. The event was a great success, even though it did take place under the blazing sun and 30 degree temperatures! Every year we have some of our students performing at the ceremony and this year was no different. The processional music, “Tchaikovsky: The Seasons” was played by JiWon Min on the piano. The first musical interlude was the performance of ‘Let it Go’ from ‘Frozen’ by the BISI Choir. The second musical interlude was a stunning performance by Sheida Kiran and Joshua Wyatt of ‘Come W hat May’ from ‘Moulin Rouge’. And finally the recessional music ‘Defying Gravity’ from ‘W icked’ was sung by the BISI choir. Our guest speaker this year was Nicole Pope a journalist, Writer, Turkey analyst and Consultant; author of ‘Turkey Unveiled: A History of Modern Turkey’. Our Valedictorians this year were Vishwesh Shah and Elif Gultekin and they both have every reason to be proud of themselves. It is not easy to deliver a formal speech in front of some two hundred or so people, but they both performed admirably. I would like to thank, Helen Kiran, John Bosman, Richard Robinson, Dominic Sargent, Lisa Mayer, JiWon Min, Joshua Wyatt, Sheida Kiran, Nicole Pope, all the members of the BISI choir, Ozlem Ozturk and her staff, Vishwesh Shah, Elif Gultekin and all the Class of 2014 and their families for coming together and making this year’s Graduation Ceremony such a wonderful success. William Bradley Class of 2014 21 Secondary– Science Week Science Week took place between 23rd and 27 th May. Science week is a good way to raise the profile of Science at the school and is appreciated by the students not only as something different from their normal lessons but also helps them to understand that Science can be even more fun than they experience in their normal Science lessons. Three trips were organised with Year 7 visiting the Istanbul Aquarium, Year 8 visiting the Belgrade Forest for field work and Year 9 visiting Koc Museum. All three trips appeared to be thoroughly enjoyed by the students. We had our usual themed lessons during the week with Year 7 building cookers, Year 8 producing an environment rap and Year 9 producing balloon cars. Year 7 have unfortunately not yet tested their cookers as incredibly there have not been any suitable weather days. We are hoping for full on sun soon! We had a demonstration of a plasma lamp with Miss Irina one lunchtime and also a Chemistry treasure hunt organised by Mr. Bytheway-Clark. The annual Science Spelling Bee competition took place for all years, the overall house winners were Maple. Michael Tarbuck (Head of the Science Department) 22 Group 4 project The Group 4 project is an essential and required component for completion of the IB Diploma and individual G4 subjects. These include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Sports and Health Science. The theme for this year was energy. Students worked in their assigned groups for two and one half days to investigate the theme and make a presentation to their year group, the Science teachers and Mr Bradley. The assessment of the G4 project is not the product but the personal skills shown by each individual in displaying self-motivation and perseverance, working within a team and self-reflection. This is assessed by the teachers observing the students during the project. This year produced some excellent projects looking at energy from many different angles including; fibre as a regulatory substance in glucose absorption, caffeine intake or sugar intake and performance in exercise, a simulation of a nuclear explosion in Istanbul and its effects and energy produced from the elephant toothpaste reaction. Michael Tarbuck (Head of the Science Department) 23 Alacati—Surf Camp Surf Camp in Alacati. Early June a group of Y7 and Y9 gladiators set out to the Aegean sea to master the battle against wind, water and equipment and they got rewarded with victory in form of satisfactory exhaustion and new skills. We set camp in the top five star Alacati Beach resort ,witch is also home to the kite and windsurfing school we got registered with. After a calm first day, the rest of the week saw blistering winds blowing over 20kn and converting the turquoise water of the bay white. Dream conditions for professional surfers and just the challenge our students came for. A morning swim at 6am or a cross country run at 7am was voluntarily organised by this tremendous group, in order to train for their last day water triathlon involving a runner, an open sea water swimmer and followed by a stand up paddle boarder racing as a team. The windsurf races where close and exciting and the kite boarders, even though the conditions where hard, had their first body drag experience on a real 7m kite. This was one of the best trips we as teachers ever have been involved in and we want to say thank you to the participants. Well done! You can find a short video here: https:// vimeo.com/97854466 Christian Huegel 24 Year 8—Akcakoca "This month the whole of Year 8 went on an action packed trip to Akçakoca on the Black Sea. The trip included various morning outdoor activities including trekking through a canyon, visiting a cave and seeing a waterfall. During the afternoons, we played various sports such as beach volleyball, cricket and football. The Akçokoca Awards: Best female trekker - Meila Heidt Best male trekker - Ali Froozbakht Best male dancer - Tijn Blanken Best female dancer - Berenice Laurent Best singer - Cenk Karabulut Chubby bunny champ - Ece Kinik Limbo champ - Enrico Sessia Biggest wally of the trip - Deniz Atay All the students had a brilliant time and were really sad to leave this beautiful area of Turkey." Rhys 25 Secondary –Swimming Gala The last week of school is becoming somewhat of a sports week, kicked off by the Secondary School Swim Gala. The competition levels were high, as always, with Maple making most of this year's noise. There were some very close races and some excellent performances which you can see from the results. Well done to Cedar who won with a total of 115 points. In second place were Maple with 110 and then Oak with 101. The scores prove that was the closest swim event we have seen in BISI for many years. It makes the race to find the winners of the 2013-2014 house shield even more exciting and it brings it all down to the results of the football and volleyball competitions that will follow over the next 2 days.......
