ÇELİŞKİLER: BAKIŞIN KARANLIK SULARI Hasan Bülent Kahraman CONTRADICTIONS: THE DARK WATERS OF THE GAZE Hasan Bülent Kahraman Maureen Connor’un sergisini meydana getiren ve farklı zamanlara, hatta on yıllara dağılmış işler başlıca iki parametrenin etrafında belirleniyor. The works from different periods, stretching out across decades, that constitute the exhibition of Maureen Connor are basically determined around two parameters. Initially, Connor’s exhibition drives the viewer into an extremely tense environment. The objects that relate to sometimes known and sometimes less known concepts, and are sometimes totally alien to the viewer because they are shaped within the boundaries of imagination are one of the most significant founding factors of this tension. Especially, the fact that these imaginary objects are produced by transforming recognisable ordinary objects that have sprung into, spread across and widely used in everyday life, creates the second phase of the tension. Diğer eliyle altına üst üste giydiği, her biri diğerinden farklı külotları çıkarıyor. Bedeninden soyduğu külotları izleyenlerin, özellikle de erkeklerin başlarına atıyor. O arada performatörün 1. Karl Marx-Frederich Engels, Communist Manifesto. New York: Pathfinder, 3rd edition, 2008. Further than that, this exhibition brings the spectators face to face with a number of extremely surprising conclusions concerning their social and sexual roles, causing another tension due to facing the inherent contradictions therein. Transforming the conventional, accepted notions of identity, self and consciousness, disturbing the habitual positions that the individual assumes and feels comfortable in, is a phenomenon that naturally increases the tension of the exhibition. Social models residing on common beliefs, and the acts of concealment, hypocrisy and condonation inherent in these assumptions within the context of general normative ethics constitute the background for Connor’s exhibition. The third phase is the intermingling of the exhibition with the concepts of the gaze, seeing, visuality and the image. This is extremely natural. We have one of the most important figures of feminist art in front of us. Considered as a neutral and immanent act, seeing and looking, the gaze is both phenomenologically and politically, as well as instinctively and within the social roles of gender, an act of extreme complexity. In this sense, when sailing in the ‘waters’ of the gaze and when this becomes a conscious act, or when the neutral structure of the gaze is subjected to a conscious analytical questioning, or simply, when the human being faces his/ her gaze he/she is shaken. It would be impossible to deny the tension created by this. Connor’s exhibition develops along these three axes. This exhibition is slowly driving us towards the point made by the opening line of the renowned text of Marx: ‘A spectre is haunting...’1 *** Maureen Connor realises a significant performance in a relatively old work. The artist is holding a plate of eggs in a hand. With her other hand she is removing her underpants that she had worn one on top of another, each one different from the next. She throws the panties she has taken off at the viewers, and especially at men. In the meantime, the eyes of the performer are closed. She is trying not to 1. Karl Marx-Frederich Engels, Communist Manifesto. New York: Pathfinder, 3rd edition, 2008. 03 gözleri kapalı. Donları çıkarırken yumurtaları düşürmemeye çalışıyor. Fakat arada bazıları düşüp kırılıyor. drop the eggs while she is taking off her underpants. However, some of them fall down and break. This is quite a complex and comprehensive work. At the time when she realised the performance, which seems to be way back in the past when viewed from the present day, Connor was making a mark and referencing one of the most important problems of femininity; the egg and the physiology that allows the production of the egg. The egg, the uterus, the ovaries and the vagina are physiological facts. In this sense, the female is a phenomenon natural and external to itself. However, through the signs, the underpants that transform the performance into a reality, Connor quickly draws the work towards a different dimension. Because, first of all the panties that are used to cover and ‘hide’ the sexual organs quickly direct the phenomenon in question away from its physiological/natural structure towards a cultural problem. Covering of sexuality, concealing sexuality is not just a cultural issue. Just like all cultural issues it leads to other issues developing in the form of concentric circles. Morality, the acceptance of a normative structure that will ensure its existence, the adoption of various codes on a common social base make up these new phases. Therefore, the underpants are a direct reference to sexuality and this baggage it carries. Judith Butler, Gender Toruble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity. London: Routledge, 2006; Bodies That Matter: On the Discursive Limits of Sex. London: Routledge, 1993; Excitable Speech: A Politics of the Performative. London: Routledge, 1997. Burada elbette Butler’ın özellikle Foucault ve Derrida’dan ödünç aldığı kavramlara ve onların tartışmasına girmiyoruz. 04 At this stage, Connor almost confirms the basic claim of Butler.2 Together with a performance Connor transforms the natural and the physiological into an act. Butler was suggesting that femininity is an ‘identity’ acquired through performance. Connor is transforming the hidden, concealed physiology that only acquires acceptance as such, into an identity through a performance and a highly complex structure. Left on its own, femininity is natural and it is a physiology. The concept of the vagina dentata, referred to in various sources of the related literature, is present in the male subconscious with all its content, and this ‘concern’ inherent in female sexuality against all its erotic potential reveals itself in Connor’s performance.3 Moreover, this fear operates through a very complex mechanism, and by merging with the castration complex, the female genitalia becomes the focus of the reaction.4 One has to emphasize the fact that behind the image created by a cheerful artist and joyful spectators lies this extremely tense, suspenseful, and even mysterious anticipation and disposition. Besides, the tension present in Connor’s work is not limited to this framework that I have just pointed out. While, on the one hand, the presentation of the sexual organ as a cultural code symbolized by the underpants and the inherent complex compositions of consciousness construct the reality of the work, on another level they are intertwined with another contradiction that the spectators do not recognize directly and have a first hand appreciation of, but are still following on a subconscious level due to their presuppositions. Connor’s eyes are closed during the performance. She cannot see the viewers. But the viewers follow her. This is an act realised by the eye. Although it has a single-sided quality in terms of looking and exchanging looks, in the final analysis performance is a dialectical phenomenon. By closing off her eyesight Connor makes us feel that she is creating the performance in her own inner space. She is realising her act by following the traces of her consciousness and her inner perceptions. However, the viewer has already become an object of the gaze. The viewer can only overcome the passive position of being a spectator by activating the act of seeing. However, this is a limited and even ‘dangerous’ way of seeing. Because, as we have mentioned above, Connor is directing the spectator towards its sexuality. Directing: because she is deliberately identifying their eyes, their act of seeing with the sexuality of the artist. Thus, making a mark: sexuality and all actions preparing for it are visual. Let us enhance it by saying: sexuality is a visual act. Physiology, as the subject of visuality, acquires a meaning beyond its existential reality only in sexuality. This is what Courbet has pointed out at a very early date: facing physiology is visibility, visuality, the image and the gaze that prepares it all. Had Connor been stating all these determinations differently, she would be only emphasizing a fact. However, through a two way construct she is transcending the border in question. First of all, by taking off the panties, by removing them from her body one at a time she directs the attention of the viewer to a certain point. With the removal of every single undergarment, the viewer, without a doubt, is taken by the idea that her sexual organ will be revealed. However, that stage is never arrived at. Every underpant is followed by another underneath. To state it through the name of the great painting of Courbet ‘the origin of the world’ (L’Origine du monde) is never revealed. In the meantime, Connor clearly drags the spectators, especially the male spectators, probably into a state of Bakmak kendiliğinden olan bir şey değildir. To look is not a spontaneous act. To look and its extension to see are related to the eye, dependent on the eye; visuality and its layers are actions embodied by the eye. By closing her eyes and directing the spectators’ on herself, Connor reminds us that both her and our 2. Without a doubt the debate that has started with the fundamental claims of Butler has become a literature in itself by now. Still, three works could be considered elemental. London: Routledge, 1993; Excitable Speech: A Politics of the Performative. London: Routledge, 1997. Of course, we will not delve into a discussion of the concepts that Butler has borrowed from Foucault and Derrida. 3. Her iktidar kendi bakışını oluşturur. İzleyicinin kendisi tarafından öngörülmüş 5. Bataille’ın bu konuyu neredeyse ebediyen diyebileceğimiz bir biçimde gündeme getirdiği anlatısı bellidir: George Bataille, Story of the Eye. Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1982. The Metaphore of the Eye’, yukarıdaki yapıt içinde, s. 119-127. 06 reality is created by the eye. And she does so through the use of eggs that are very interesting and that again cause serious tension in the performance space. The egg is first and foremost a fragile thing. In fact, Connor experiences this fragility while she is trying not to drop them. Soon, this falling-breaking drags the viewer into a position of anticipation in front of an acrobat on a tightrope, curios and excited wondering whether he will fall or not. First of all, this adventure-excitement dilemma is a warning and a reminder that the artist directs at the viewer. On the other hand, there is a direct link and a correlation between sexuality and its physiology -as we have been mentioning earlier- and the presence of the egg. The female is a creature producing eggs. This is what distinguishes her from the male. Connor is expressing this ‘difference’ of femininity. Having the egg that she carries inside on a plate in her hands is a metaphor of the relationship between art and reality containing inverted transformations. Reminding the spectator focused on sexuality, that in fact, the issue is shaped in the context of the “egg”. bakışa, bakış bilincine sahip olmasını ister. Çünkü neyin görüldüğüyle, görülenin ne olduğuyla meşguldür iktidar. eye inside her, a woman disposing of the eye. The eggs in that plate are all these things at once. Connor is emphasizing the stages of her femininity and the reality of the eye-gaze-spectator, and the cultural codes intertwined and identified with these. Stages ending in a little blood! *** The egg is not that innocent then. What’s more; for human beings the egg is something that is eaten. If the human being eats the egg, and if the egg has an aspect that could be associated with the eye, then is the human being a creature that kills the gaze, that devours it? It is so. The human being kills its gaze. This is one of the main objectives of power. Every power creates its own view. It desires that the spectator is equipped with a view, a perspective that is predetermined by itself. More precisely, power is not interested in the gaze, it is interested in what is seen. In contrast to the gaze, which might be a neutral act, power sets forth the borders of the conscious act of seeing. Because power is occupied with what is seen, and with what it is that is seen. But there’s also a different aspect here: since Bataille, the egg is read as the subject of complex queries.5 The egg has an ‘eye’. This is a definition of the egg in language: the eye. A single egg is called an eye. The egg is a looking object. But at the same time there are those looking at Connor, they are the spectators and they carry out their act with the eye, with a gaze. Therefore, could one argue that the identification of the viewer’s eye and gaze with the reality of the eye contained and marked by the egg, and at the same time the fact that the egg is in possession of and given to the artist as a woman does not correspond to the changing of roles mentioned earlier; and therefore on a subconscious level is it not true that the viewer is reduced to an eye, a gaze, and has assumed the position of an egg, and hence buried into the artist, transformed into a reality concealed in her identity, her physiology? The continuous movement of reality like a ball in a tennis match going back and forth continuously between the two sides is no coincidence, it is a structure consciously constructed by Connor. Let us continue: The artist as a woman, tells the spectators who find/gain their reality through their gaze, that they, the viewers, are carried by her, the artist: she says, I hold the eggs. And continues: the viewers are eggs. Because they have eyes. The artist holds the eggs. The viewer is carried by the artist. But if the egg is the gazing eye, then that too is held by the female artist. The female artist carries an eye in her. On the other hand, the female will produce an egg and disposes of it if she does not use it. Disposal will take place through bleeding. A bleeding woman is a woman who is externalising the 5. The narrative where Bataille perpetually delves into this subject is: George Bataille, Story of the Eye. Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1982. Videography by Demitri Deviakos 07 08 09 Bu, nesnenin anlamının ortak bilinç üstünden homojenizasyonudur. 6. Bu sorgulamanın kaynağı şudur: ‘Las Meninas’, The Order of Things: An Archeology of the Human Sciences. New York: Vintage, 1994; s. 3-16 7. ‘Reviewed by Lynee Huffer’, (Reviewed book: Joseph J. Tanke, Foucault's Philosophy of Art: A Genealogy of Modernity. London and New York: Continuum, 2009.) http://ndpr.nd.edu/news/24439-foucault-s-philosophy-of- art-a-genealogy-of-modernity/ 8. Ibid. 10 This is the homogenization of the meaning of the object through collective consciousness. Seeing hits the boundaries of consciousness constructed by power. Moreover, to state it in Foucault’s grand determination, power is a matter of surveillance in the modern era, and it is a state related to the disappearance of the observer.6 In modernity, power emerges in a para-doxical situation in which the observer is out of sight and the observed is rendered thoroughly bare. In this configuration, even though the point has never been addressed as such, we now know since Mulvey that the observed is a feminine and the observer is a masculine subject. This subject could even be the society, the social perspective/eye determined within the framework of moral codes which is much more severe and extensively the case. Connor is ‘stretching’ a number of objects to such a degree that they would transcend their meanings. Some familiar objects have been rendered in such a way that a familiarity with them could only be established through resemblances. It is clearly a fact that these objects reshaped by a process of rebuilding with some metaphorical exaggeration, no longer hold a relationship of categorisation or a characteristic of reproduction based on copies. The object is isolated from its meaning. Considered in a Foucaultian approach the relationship between seeing-power is at the same time the relationship between representation and resemblance. Following on from what Tanke establishes, the aesthetics of Renaissance, in the context set forth by Foucault, envisaged the organisation of knowledge through concealed resemblances and its ‘display’ in that context on an artistic level. The classical period had clearly shifted from resemblance to representation. During this period, the taxonomic ordering of the visible signs resulted in representation. The starting point of modernity and the initiation of the ‘age of man’ was due to this dynamic.7 In 19 th and 20 th centuries, which might be called the modern era, this formation went through three major phases. The referential, the non-referential, and the self replicating release of the image. The first period was represented by Manet, the second by Magritte, and the third by Warhol.8 And the period after Warhol is without a doubt the post-representational period. Has the quest for obliterating the object in the post-representational period, and doing so by fracturing the present and given meaning of the object as seen in Magritte, in response to the approach of categorising knowledge and the endeavour to realise this through taxonomic definitions of objects in Renaissance and the classical period, led to a space of liberation in the post-representational era? The answer to this question creates a very significant momentum in Connor’s exhibition. Because a striking part of the exhibition consists of a number of objects whose meanings are constructed around a visuality that we have mentioned above, which swiftly transports us to the post-representational era. 6. Evaluated visually this is the object transforming its image, and such an occurrence could be considered an intervention regarding the gaze. An intervention to transcend the given, disciplined and categorical meaning of the gaze. Considered, once more, through Foucaultian reasoning, the discipline of the gaze is a question of power and Connor swings a severe blow to that ‘tamed’ gaze. This is a very important stage. Because it is clearly pushing the boundaries of the Duchampian aesthetics. There is the attempt of excluding an object from its categorical position to be able to shape it around a new topology, as seen in that aesthetics transforming a urinal into a work of art; and some of these objects (racks) have a direct reference to the works of Duchamp. However, these objects draw our attention to a reality very different and quite a long way away from them. Elbette sanatçının tercihi ve önermesi olarak değil, algılanışı itibariyle canavarlaşmış, ürküntü uyandıran kadın: monstrous feminine.9 While the objects defer their categorical meanings, they consciously contain the resemblances and these resemblances directly correspond to a state of femininity. These are objects that the female relates to in the everyday. Yet they create the tension which surrounds the whole exhibition like a spectre, perhaps due to being blown up enormously. Secondly, they register a reference to the categorisation that femininity possesses and lacks in the realm of representation. Just as the state of petrification previously established around the resemblance of vagina dentata, here, there is a construction of a monstrous femininity that makes itself felt. Of course, not as a preference, or a proposition of the artist but as a monstrous, frightening woman due to the way she is perceived: the monstrous feminine.9 Her ne kadar bu kavram daha farklı bağlamlarda geliştirilmişse de özü itibariyle Freud’un çok net bir açıklamasından türemiştir. Although this concept has been developed in several different contexts, essentially it is derived from a very clear description of Freud. Freud was emphasizing that the woman is frightening, because the woman was a castrated being. However, later studies were transferring the state of being castrated to the being that carries out the castration. Indeed, this phenomenon is important in terms of the determination of the source of the aforementioned vagina dentata. Moreover, no matter what the conceptualisation is, the underlying concept in this objectification is the uncanny: unheimlich. The definition of the uncanny is clear in Freud. Apart from its other meanings and its semantic ‘functions’ the uncanny, according to Freud, is that which is out of sight, it is that which is not seen.10 Now it is becoming more clear that in Connor’s exhibition, the tension is provided by the uncanny determined in the subconscious by the female conditions mentioned all the way from the beginning, by femininity, by womanhood itself. Together with the references of the performance that we have emphasized, the fact that the objects are enlarged enormously reminds us of the creepy side of the female/femininity. However, in contrast to the hidden, concealed nature of the Freudian uncanny, Connor, through a significant transformation, renders the uncanny by expanding these objects to monstrous dimensions, by enlarging them, by making them completely visible. This must be called the uncanny inverted, which as an understanding, counts for a very significant turn in a feminist structure. Let us put it this way: the ordinary nature of the invisible object that has become invisible in its usual size in the conventional order of things, in comparison to the object that is an aberration, that has been rendered completely visible and became uncanny. Interesting: because there is a reversed reference to what Freud says; ordinary when invisible, uncanny when visible. To create the uncanny mentioned earlier, founded on a transformation of visuality and presented as an expression of the post-representational era, Connor utilises another tool: viscera. Either to deepen the feeling created by these objects that have been rendered uncanny, or completely independent of them, Connor integrates some of the works with some unidentified objects resembling internal organs. Sometimes making use of the inherent possibilities of expression of a singular presentation and sometimes using the multiplicity of possibilities of some integrations, Connor creates an utterly irritating and thought provoking framework for the spectator. Read from within the femininity which makes up the general texture of the exhibition, the emphasis on viscera becomes even stronger. Therefore, a determination shaped through the body emerges. However, the body, this time, is evolving inwards. This stage is also very striking, because, if we go back to the definition of the uncanny and remember that the hidden, concealed, out of sight was also included in that category by Freud. Then, there could be no objection to linking the uncanniness of the internal organs ‘here’. Because it is not visible and as long as it is not visible the ‘inside’ of the human body is uncanny. Now, Connor presents the invisible sometimes through remote resemblances, for example, by showing a red object that is not clearly legible, but still making us think that it is an organ or by exhibiting any other object that resembles a liver, she leads the viewer even closer to the edge of the uncanny. İsimsiz / Untitled 1989, tüm bedeni kaplayan kıyafet, döküm koyun akciğeri, karışık teknik Body suit, cast of sheep lung, mixed media, 237 cm 18 19 Bu durumda sergiyi dolaşan hayaletlerden biri bu üstünde durduğumuz ‘tekinsiz’ duygusudur denebilir. Oysa dilin oluşmasıyla ve simgesel olana geçmekle 20 In this case, it could be said that one of the spectres wandering in the exhibition is this feeling of the ‘uncanny’ on which we stand. Connor has designed this spectre, the uncanny, as a perpetual to and fro between the visible and the invisible. The object being familiar when invisible. The object being uncanny when visible. The feeling of familiarity created by the internal organs when they are invisible. The uncanniness of visible internal organs. This is an additional dimension to the unease nurturing relationship established on the plane of the egg-gaze earlier and a very serious questioning of the reality of the gaze, that is: the uncanny as the visible and the invisible! *** The gaze’s construction of the uncanny is not limited to the objectimage relationship. It is possible to see this by looking at another work in the exhibition. In this work titled Narrow Escape, once more Connor presents a dual mise en scène to the spectator. The spectators watch women first eating desserts and then trying to pass through a really narrow opening, on screens mounted onto what could be considered a baroque wardrobe. After passing through the slit (which is heavily loaded with symbolic meanings, and reminds us of at least a vagina and an allusion to being born) women begin to play a game. During the game we hear music in the background. The lyrics of the song is very suggestive. It reminds women that they should be beautiful, and that it is their duty. Women will be sitting down on one of the chairs in front of them when the song comes to an end. In the classic children’s game the one standing up will be excluded from the game. But here there are enough chairs for everyone. (In the meantime, the shape of the chairs is also extremely suggestive.) However, here, the chair of the so called winner breaks down. The winner loses the game and is excluded from it. Connor once again reaches out to the dual paradox and allows the one excluded from the game to unite with the cakes prohibited in the context of femininity. The ones excluded from the game go to the cake stand and eat as much cake as they can: a narrow escape. Thus, in terms of the context of femininity/beauty it is not clear who is a winner and who is a loser. But what is more remarkable is that the viewer is watching the video in the same space where the event took place. The same chairs, the same slit surround the spectators. While you are watching what some women were doing in the video you find yourself in the same space with them. It could be easily argued that this has a direct relationship with making the invisible visible. But let us ask the same question again, what is this - construct? To put it in a somewhat speculative context, with this move Connor is placing a rather Lacanian problem in front of the spectator. Let us push the limits: here the Symbolical, the context shaped as the place where language, and thus ‘reading’ occurs in Lacan, is being challenged by Connor. The symbolic, at the end of the day, is the visualisation of the Lacanian imaginary. The imaginary is birlikte iki şey ortaya çıkmaktadır. Sartre, daha sonra Lacan’ın ele alacağı görüşünde insanın kendisini başkalarının onu algıladığı şekilde algıladığını associated with the integrated in this metaphysics. However, with the formation of language and by moving into the symbolic two things emerge. This situation indicates the primacy of language in Lacan, in contrast to Freud, and leads to, signifies the materialisation of the Law, rules and structures, therefore, of the system, and also reveals the relationship between the imaginary and the symbolic. There is clearly a ‘system’ congestion in the work. Women are ‘slim’ing in terms of the social norm of ‘beauty’. They are achieving the integrity of the self by investigating that context (by going back to eat cake after losing the game). This is perhaps a passage from the Symbolic to the Imaginary. But the same thing is also true for the viewer. She/he is also finding herself/himself in the same space where she/he is watching the women and achieving the Imaginary phase, and the state of integrity. An imaginary emerging through alienation. To a certain degree this is also a reality that emerges within the context of the ‘gaze’ that has imbued into the whole fabric of the exhibition: the verification of the gaze. *** Indeed, the whole exhibition is built around this concept. All of the works we have been dealing with, are questioning the asymmetrical rather than symmetrical relations of the gaze. The following could be said. While the performance realised by the artist herself is constructed around the phenomenon of the eye/egg, the relationship of both the observer and the observed with the female identity is placed a little bit in a Mulveyist context. In her infamous essay, Mulvey was establishing that the looking woman was adopting the male gaze.11 While Mulvey was referring to the relatively neutral characteristic of looking that the eye holds, and abstracting it in front of a whole audience she was also bringing the observer-observed asymmetry onto the agenda. This phenomenon is extremely noticeable in Connor’s work. This asymmetry is primarily apparent in the works where the hidden/uncanny relationship is lined up with the visible/uncanny relationship. The implicit or hidden relationship between the internal organs and femininity is brought up as a problem of masculinity in front of an entire audience. This was a questioning directed towards the determined properties of the gaze. Finally, in the video structured in the context of beauty/femininity, the issue that the beauty attributed to women is a matter about the gaze and about the image was raised: the beauty of the woman gazed at or the woman who is beautiful when gazed at. This context somewhat reminds us of the idea of the gaze defined by Sartre. In a view that would be addressed by Lacan later on, Sartre 11. Çünkü insan kendisini gene tıpkı başkalarının onu nesneleştirdiği şekilde nesneleştiriyordu. Bu oluşumun temel nedeni bizim başkalarının bakışına hapsolmamızdı. Başkalarının bizi gözetlediğini fark ettiğimiz an duyduğumuz utanç duygusunun varoluşsal boyutu aynı zamanda bir uzam meselesiydi. 12. Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness, tr. by Hazel E. Barnes. New York: Washington Square Press, 1966; s. 340-400; özellikle, 345. 13. Minnesota: Minnesota University Press, 2006. 28 was emphasizing that the human being perceives herself/himself as the others perceive her/him.12 This depended upon a ‘relationship’ with the Other. Because the human being objectifies herself/himself in the same way as the others objectify her/him. The main reason for this incident is that we are trapped in the gaze of others. The existential dimension of the feeling of shame that we experience when we notice others watching us is also a matter of space. I desire to be able to arrange my space on my own. But those who share that space with me also want to arrange it in the same way that I do. Therefore, the order that I shall build will take shape around ‘them’, that is around the presence of the other. Thus the gaze is a reality in which I perceive myself through the ‘eye’ of the other. The dilemmas and the reciprocal interaction in Connor’s exhibition look like a clear reference to what could be redefined as Sartre’s dual gaze. The twin meanings we have been emphasizing since the beginning are the open and closed relationships of the interaction between the I and the Other. In this respect, the matrix gaze and the matrix space that Ettinger establishes are as significant as ‘the objectification through the other’s gaze’ that we have structured by way of Sartre and it could be argued that they are even more important in terms of the asymmetries of the mutual gaze.13 At the end of the day, we are facing a highly complex exhibition layout on the complexities of the gaze. Especially the video about women ‘forming’ and contradicting themselves in terms of the conception of ‘beauty’ is a clear expression of this comprehension. At the same time, this is a critique of the subject defining and -to put it in an existentialist way- ‘making’ the self through the other’s eye (or a social norm). On the other hand, this is a very clear expression of voyeurism that is spread throughout the various layers of the exhibition and that has an inevitable relationship with the concept of the gaze. *** Indeed, the final aspect of this framework in the exhibition is made up of work with a much more openly political content/discourse. In these works, once more, Connor deals with the individual stuck into its own little space, into the conditions set out by an outer eye, by an ‘alien’ eye developed through sometimes a Sartrean and sometimes an Ettingerian understanding. If they were to be evaluated through the eye/gaze it would be possible to see this in all of the works. Rather then being concerned about the physical tightness brought about by space Connor pursues the mentality and reasoning that leads to this tightness. Public space is significant and productive when it is egalitarian and shared with others, but it becomes the realm of a highly oppressive surveillance, discipline and hegemony when established around hegemonic relationships. Simply put, 12. Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness, tr. by Hazel E. Barnes. New York: Washington Square Press, 1966; p. 340-400; particularly, 345. 13. The book where this concept is discussed on a broader context is: Bracha Ettinger, The Matrixial Borderline. Minnesota: Minnesota University Press, 2006. Bakış bu kimlikten etkilendiği public space is a space of power. Therefore, it is a contested space. The bureaucracy that we encounter through modernity is a plane shaped with a certain mechanics around these three phenomena, and dominated by an accepted, internalized sense of oppression. Here the hegemony of the gaze creates a precise and complicated matrix. Connor reveals this feeling through a questioning of the workplace. Eliminating these negative characteristics of public space is not possible to achieve through the inner dynamics of this space and these subjects. However, the absolute authority, the public authority that is, the government would not go along with that either. Because the extension of this situation leads to the justification of the state that has the right and authority to the ‘legitimate use of violence’ according to Weber’s definition. The state is in favor of a public space organised under close observation and a hegemonic/ authoritarian logic. What is more dramatic is that the individual who has internalized the system and in a Sartrean sense, who objectifies herself/himself as the other objectifies her/him, has lost the ability to react and therefore does not even attempt to react. Thus, the public space should be perceived as a stiff, inefficient, one track envisioning of power. The realm of bureaucracy, as Connor clearly demonstrates, is a closed, atomised area, perhaps used by the people but ultimately isolated from society, an area of gated community. The individual is alienated here. The fact that this crippled dialectics takes place in spaces, such as museums, that have acquired art as their subject, is a highly metaphorical emphasis presented by Connor. The fact that art, which according to its very definition should be opposed to power, or the oppositional characteristics of which would be absolutely natural, is facing these inner constraints in a bureaucratic place draws on the borders of the relationship between bureaucracymodernity-capitalism. This is a desertifying, sterilizing, consuming relationship. In the final analysis, the fact that the human being who has to work to earn a living is going to be convicted to this system of slavery makes up one of the most dramatic parts of the exhibition, and let us repeat, evaluating this systematic in the context of the gaze is even more striking. If the subject matter is servitude then who could argue that we are not prisoners of the gaze? Therefore, one can mention two political layers in this exhibition. If the macro-political plane is integrated with works that clearly express themselves in this way, the micro-political plane is the area where the gaze, seeing, voyeurism and the identities formed within the framework of the gaze are examined. The macro-political plane conceals the gaze. And the micro-political plane conceals the political discourse. But in both stages, these implicit and explicit phenomena support and complement each other. In addition, all the given situations and the ones she criticises Connor expresses through ‘visuality’. This is the 29 kadar bu kimliği etkilemektedir. Ama sonunda bize görünenle görünmeyen arasındaki örümcek ağının haritasını çıkarıyor. difference between the enslaving and the emancipating aspects of visuality/gaze and it is one of the ‘spectres’ that exist throughout the exhibition. *** The gaze, seeing, image and other themes and concepts connected to them make up the ‘dark continent’ of the consciousness of humanity, if we were to borrow a concept that Freud used in another context. One important reason for this is that this concept is intertwined with the woman, with femininity. The formation and reconciliation of sexual identity and roles are to a great extent concerned with the asymmetry of the gaze and the content of sexual identity. The gaze affects this identity, as much as it is affected by it. The meaning of this phenomenon stands out even more in today's world where visuality has gained a new dynamism. We are experiencing an almost entirely eroticised world of visuality. This erotic/sexual tissue creates a domination through visuality. The extent of domination is determined by the dose of sexuality. This situation could be regarded as an ‘aporia’ that visuality borders on. With the multi-layered questioning she placed into the exhibition and with her ongoing quest and examination carried from the past into the present Connor creates an awareness that we could call visual consciousness. She carries this out with a highly artistic style and an exceedingly subtle emphasis. In contrast to the sophisticated style of the artistic dimension of the exhibition, the part making us question visuality contains a harshness, either explicitly or implicitly, on a matching degree. This is due to wandering around the perimeter of what we have been calling the gaze; a phenomenon that looks plain and innocent, yet could be extremely dark and sinful; due to sailing its dangerous waters and entering its dark maze. However, in the end she manages to map the intricate spider’s web between the visible and the invisible. Personnel 2000-2010 video documentation For Personnel the needs and desires of art institutions’ staff is the subject of a series of installations in order to explore how workplace design both reflects and influences workplace dynamics. 34 Personnel 4, 2004-7 Whyspa Art Institute, Gdansk, Poland As part of the post Soviet transformation of Poland the historic Gdansk Shipyard workplace became a cultural center. In this context the curator’s office was configured as an alternative to the stereotypical ‘well designed’ version (e.g. MoMA via Knoll and Herman Miller,) that pretends to offer comfort and efficiency but actually reinforce hierarchy and status.. By combining elements of the shipyard’s history-- a vista from the 1980s became an image on a curtain (p. 36)—and found objects-- laundry room and boudoir accessories became shelf and storage space (p. 36), a discarded shipyard toilet was cast and transformed into office seating (pp32-33, 36)-- this installation sets out to rupture corporate, bureaucratic and museological codes and some of the behavior that goes with them. Personnel 3, 2003 Tapies Foundation (Fundacio Tapies), Barcelona, Spain For the Tapies Foundation, where office storage was one of many problems afflicting an overworked and understaffed institution (p. 34 video still from documentation), the design included a unique reservoir for drinking water (pp. 38-39) as well as wearable shelving units (p. 31). The latter structures, fabricated to function as clothing, furniture and architecture simultaneously, were on wheels and meant to be worn/inhabited by the office staff, who could use them as portable work and storage spaces. The pieces were also symbolic: constructed to overwhelm the wearer, they made movement awkward and the performance of even the simplest task difficult, denoting some of the problems that arise when each individual carries too much responsibility. At the same time the skirts were strong and quite able to support their heavy load, despite the stress, and could therefore appear rather poignantly heroic. (s. 37 dokümantasyondan video karesi) 36 Personnel 2, 2002, Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada Functioning as both liaison to the international art community and regional art center Mendel Art Gallery’s staff frequently disagreed about how to best serve such disparate audiences. In an effort to bring the community together as well as to attract the interest and curiosity of Mendel’s public the staff agreed to be videotaped for three days as they went about their work at the museum: the first day everyone dressed up — the women in gowns and party clothes, the men in tuxedos and dress suits; the second day everyone wore pajamas, nightgowns, robes and slippers while on the third day everyone dressed in his or her “normal” work clothes. (p. 35 video still from documentation) The clothing gave mundane activities a humorous and theatrical quality and made a spectacle of even the simplest task. For the installation, two single channel videos were put together from this three day period and projected in the galleries just adjacent to the museum’s offices, thus dissolving the usually pristine walls of the museum to expose its “real” inner workings. Şu anki proje olan Artists in Residence for the US Government (self declared) (ABD Hükümeti Misafir Sanatçı Programı (kendi kendine ilan edilmiş)) The Institute for Wishful Thinking’in (IWT) sanatçı topluluğunun sosyal problemlerin çözümünde uygulanabilecek keşfedilmemiş yaratıcı ve kavramsal kaynaklara sahip olduğuna inancını ortaya koymaktadır. Installation view: Institute for Wishful Thinking: Artists in Residence for the US Government (self declared) includes ‘recruiting’ video and a selection of artists’ proposals. The Institute for Wishful Thinking (IWT), founded in 2008, is a collective project that aims to transform the role of artist from that of constructive Critic (as in Personnel) to change agent—imaging what could happen in the best possible future. The current project Artists in Residence for the US Government (self declared) shows that the IWT believes the community of artists possesses untapped creative and conceptual resources that can be applied to solving social problems. With this in mind we have invited proposals for residencies at government agencies and organizations at all levels. Like the Artists Placement Group and other artists who have focused their practice on non-art contexts the IWT uses a reskilled conceptual toolbox that might contain activism, urban studies, anthropology and political science as well as experience in critical thinking and reframing. The installation is based on a definition of the sixth sense from the early Renaissance, which departs from our present understanding of the sixth sense as a kind of ESP. Instead it was explained as self control, a kind of sensory censor that determines how we use our other senses. The three-part mirrors in the installation are similar to those found in dressing rooms. These mirrors, however, are two way and behind them monitors replace reflections with changing video images and in this way impose sensory experiences on the viewer, thus controlling their experience. This installation is part of a series based on an exploration of the senses from a social and cultural point of view. 46 47 48 49 50 51 Ensemble for Three Female Voices 1991, mixed media installation, 260x285 cm 52 53 Ensemble for Three Female Voices 1991, mixed media installation, 260x285 cm Rujdan döküm dil ve gırtlak, bir bebek sesi, genç bir kadın ve yaşlı bir kadının aralıklarla gülme ve ağlama sesleri ile karışık teknik.
