The grey wolf also known as the timber wolf is a
mammal of the order Carnivora. Highly adaptable, the
grey wolf can thrive in a number of areas like temperate
forests, mountains, grasslands, and some urban areas.
Though once abundant over much of North America and
areas of Europe and Asia, it today inhabits a very small
portion of its former range because of the widespread
destruction of its habitat. The grey wolf has the longest
and most powerful snout of wild canids, which can be
used to distinguish it from other canids such as coyotes
and jackals, which have a narrower snout. Compared to
domestic dogs, which are categorized as a subspecies
of the grey wolf, it has longer legs, yellow eyes, larger
paws, and bigger teeth. The grey wolf is also extremely
territorial and quite ruthless. The pack, which usually
consists of a couple and their offspring, hunts together,
and is capable of taking down large animals like deer or
buffalo.
34. It can be inferred from the passage that ----.
A) the domestic dog descended from the grey
wolf
B) grey wolves live only in Europe and Asia
today
C) many of the grey wolf subspecies became
extinct thousands of years ago
D) the grey wolf preys on small mammals unlike
jackals
