PUBLIC TRANSPORTS For information on arriving in and departing from Istanbul, please check the websites of both airports serving Istanbul: The main Airport is located on the European side of Istanbul is Atatürk Airport (IST). http://www.ataturkairport.com/en-EN/Transportation/pages/airporttrasnportation.aspx There are about 35kms between Atatürk Airport and the Sakip Sabanci Museum. It should cost around 65 TRY (22€). Istanbul's second and much newer airport is Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and is situated on the Asian side of Istanbul about 30km south east of the ferry dock at Kadikoy. It is served by many budget airlines but also caters for internal flights. http://www.sgairport.com/havaalani/eng/ulasim.asp There are about 45kms between Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and the Sakip Sabanci Museum. It should cost around 85 TRY (29€). In a nutshell, taxis and shuttle services are the most convenient way to reach the city. For travelling inside Istanbul, please look up the following blog: http://www.wittistanbul.com/magazine/use-public-transportation-in-istanbul-to-reachmost-places-of-interest/ Maps of tramway and subway line are available on the following website: http://www.istanbul-ulasim.com.tr/passenger-services/network-maps.aspx 8. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS 4 Normally no immunizations are required or needed. Here is more information on medical assistance in Istanbul: http://istanbul.angloinfo.com/information/healthcare/health-system/hospitals-pharmacies/ Pharmacies or “Eczane” are quite widely available but are open only from 9:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and Saturdays. An emergency pharmacy opened all hours is available in every city district according to a rota. For Emergency numbers, please see: http://www.ibb.gov.tr/sites/ks/en-US/2-CityGuide/Pages/emergency-phones.aspx 9. CURRENCY The local currency is the Türk Lirası (Turkish Lira = TRY). The change rate at 20/03/2014 is 1 Euro = 3.08 TRY; 1 USD = 2.23 TRY ; 1 GBP = 3.68 TRY. Credit cards (mainly Visa and Mastercard) are accepted and widely used except in smaller businesses (budget hostels and hotels, and basic eateries). You do not need to change money prior to arrival as currency exchange offices and ATM machines are all over the city and at the airport, though it may be handy to have some Turkish change at your arrival just in case. ATMs machines: all of the major Turkish banks and some smaller banks have ATMs; Akbank and Yapı Kredi are the most common) Currency exchange: there are 24-hour exchange bureaux (döviz bürosu) in the arrivals hall at Atatürk International Airport that offer rates comparable to those offered by bureaux in the city. Count the money you’re given carefully and save your currency-exchange receipts (bordro), as you may need them to reconvert Turkish liras at the end of your stay. US dollars and euros are easily changed at exchange bureaux. They are also often accepted as payment without being changed. Rates are similar whichever bureau you go to, with the possible exception of those in the tourist precinct of Sultanahmet. Bureaux are open long hours (at a minimum, between 9am and 7pm). You will usually need to show your passport when changing cash. 10. WEATHER & CLOTHING Late spring (late May to early June) is very pleasant (average 20°C) and therefore the best time to visit the city. During that period it is neither cold nor hot, and still sunny, though the nights can be chilly and rain is common. A mix of light and warm clothing plus an umbrella/rain coat is thus recommended. Also take note that due to its huge size, topography and maritime influences, Istanbul exhibits a multitude of distinct microclimates. Thus, different sections of Istanbul can experience different weather conditions at the same time. See this meteo website for Istanbul and its region. 11.
